The purpose of this study was to quantify the variation of baseline carbon and nitrogen stable isotope signatures in the Lake Simcoe watershed and relate that variation to various physicochemical parameters. Particulate organic matter samples from2009 and2011 were used as representatives of baseline isotopic values. Temporal data from two offshore lake stations revealed thatδ 15 N of POM was lowest mid\summer and highest after the fall turnover. POMδ 13c was variable throughout the summer before declining after fall turnover. Spatial data from the lake and the tributaries revealed that POM stable isotope signatures were highly variable. Various physicochemical parameters indicative of phytoplankton biomass were significantly positively correlated with POMδ 15 N and significantly negatively correlated with POM δ 13c. The correlations were mostly significant in the tributaries, not the lake. Moreover, many of the correlations involvingδ 15 N of POM were driven by extreme values in cook's Bay and its tributaries. In general, it's likely that different processes or combination of processes were affecting theδ 15 N andδ 13c POM in the Lake Simcoe watershed as physicochemical parameters alone could not explain the variability. Measuring theδ 15 N of ammonium and nitrate, as well as theδ 13c of DIc would help discern the dominant nitrogen and inorganiccarbon cycling processes occurring in the Lake Simcoe watershed.

A Porites Lutea core from Yongshu Reef of Nansha Islands covering 50-year growth history is analyzed for carbon iso-topiccomposition with monthly and seasonal resolution, and the results show that the coral δ13c generally has clear yearly cycles. The calibration indicates that the coral δ13ccan record the sunshine duration, total cloud cast and rainfall of the Yongshu Reef, and it also shows significant association to El Nino events. From 1950 to 1999, the δ13c shows a clear long-term declining trend, which indicates a decrease in the sunshine duration and an increase in cloud cast and rainfall over Yongshu Reef over the past fifty years.

We related tree ring width (TRW) and isotopiccomposition (delta c-13, delta O-18) of wood and cellulose from four larch trees (Larix cajanderi Mayr.) to climate parameters. The material was sampled in northeastern Yakutia [70 degrees N-148 degrees E] for the recent (AD 1880-2004) and early Medieval (AD 900-1000) periods. During the recent period June, July, and August air temperatures were positively correlated with delta c-13 and delta O-18 of wood and cellulose, while July precipitation was negatively correlated. Furthermore, the vapor pressure deficit (VPD) of July and August was significantly correlated with delta c-13 of wood and cellulose, but VPD had almost no influence on delta O-18. comparative analyses between mean isotope values for the (AD 900-1000) and (AD 1880-2004) periods indicate similar ranges of climaticconditions, with the exception of the period AD 1950-2004. While isotopic ratios in cellulose are reliably related to climatic variables, during some periods those in whole wood showed even stronger relationships. Strong positive correlations between delta O-18 of cellulose and Greenland ice-core (GISP2) data were detected for the beginning of the Medieval period (r = 0.86;p < 0.05), indicating the reliability of isotope signals in tree rings for large-scale reconstructions.
