Searching the health care literature is an activity in which infection control professionals must routinely engage to seek evidence-based answers to specific practice questions and to stay abreast of developments in the field. Without the appropriate tools, the tremendous volume of clinical literature makes both of these daunting tasks, in this article, we illustrate techniques for searching MEDLINE efficiently, both as a means of answering particular clinical questions and for generating periodic updates on topics of general interest. With use of a specific example relevant to infection control, we demonstrate the identification of appropriate Medical Subject Headings terms that capture a given question or topic and the development of effective searches with use of these terms. We also touch on the advantages of targeting systematic reviews and meta-analyses in searching for evidence and staying abreast of the literature in general.

Objective-To assess the published research base for interventions for osteoarthritis of the knee, and to identify areas in need of further research. Methods-Literature searches were conducted on electronic databases (Medline, Embase, ISI, and Cochrane library), bibliographies of existing review articles were hand searched, and a postal questionnaire was sent to members of the Osteoarthritis Research Society international. All relevant articles were copied and searched for treatment type, study methodology, statistical results, conclusions, funding source, researcher affiliations, and year of publication, using a predetermined data extraction form. Results-There have been marked changes in the literature over the period studied (1950-98), with a recent rise in trials of physical therapy, educational interventions, and complementary treatments. However, overall, most research was either drug (59.1%) or surgically (25.6%) related. Most of the studies reported positive results (94%). Research on oral drugs was significantly more likely to provide a positive result than research on any other intervention (p<0.001 by chi(2) test). Commercially funded studies were significantly more likely to produce a positive result than non-commercially funded research (p=0.0027 by chi(2) test). Conclusions-Analysis of time trends indicates that the research agenda does shadow changes in consumer demands. However, there are significant gaps in the research base that need to be considered.

This paper describes an evaluation of a curriculum-integrated information literacy programme in an undergraduate nursing course. The aim of the programme was to provide students with an awareness of the discipline's literature and the skills to locate and retrieve the literature. A multidimensional process for determining nursing students' development was utilised in the evaluation of the programme. Pre- and post-programme questionnaires were distributed to a cohort of students who undertook the programme. A cohort of more senior students who had not undertaken the information literacy programme was utilised as a comparison group. Questionnaire results were analysed using a range of inferential statistics. This paper will focus on two main findings related to objective measures of information literacy skills. These include pre-programme/post-programme change in student performance and differences in student performance between those who undertook the programme and those who did not. The programme demonstrated its effectiveness in developing information literacy skills, however the challenge remains for both academics and students to ensure that these skills are consolidated and extended for effective life-long learning. Nurses are required to undertake professional updating, PREP (UKCC, 1994), and are increasingly under pressure to ensure that they provide evidence-based healthcare (DoH, 1996). Proliferation of the literature, the move from printed to electronic sources of information and shortage of time may all be seen as barriers to nurses who wish to gain access to information to support these activities. Libraries are important gateways to this information and this article is a brief guide to making the most of library resources.

The use of information technology in dental education is continually increasing. In this article, IT is defined, and its uses in teaching and learning explored. Examples of the appropriateness of multimedia reaching in dental education are given. Successful multimedia teaching, especially in clinical settings, relies on the proper use of IT and an implementation strategy. the applications of It to curriculum development, computer-assisted learning (CAL), educational administration, dental practice, hospital administration, and clinical research are also considered.
