Self-Reported Burnout Among HMO Pharmacists

This study examines self-reported burnout, potential risk factors and causes, and self-reported solutions to burnout among different types of pharmacists in a large prepaid group practice HMO. A substancial share of pharmacists reported that burnout is or has been a problem with them. The quality of the job was mentioned as the most frequent cause of burnout by all types of pharmacists. More varietv and responsibilitv and decreased workloads were the most frequekly offered solutions to burnout by both staff and supervisor/specialist phamacists. The findings suggest that pharmacists burnout should be of concern to managgment. © 1987, Informa UK Ltd. All rights reserved.

Employer Perspectives of HMO Prescription Drug Benefits

A survey of employers was undertaken to ascertain the potential role of the rescription drug component in HMO marketing strategies. The study focused on (1) the importance of the drug component in makine a HMO attractive to emplovers and (2) employer evaluations of selected features of HMO drug programs pertaining to: sources of supply, copayment amounts, and quality assurance/cost containment initiatives. While not unimportant to employers, the prescription drug component was of relatively less importance than some other medical services (e.g. outpatient medical, hospital). Employers did perceive differences among alternative features of HMO drug programs. © 1987, Informa UK Ltd. All rights reserved.
