Electronic mail (E-mail) has the potential to enhance the professional relationship both between physician and patient, and among physicians of the same and different specialties. Despite this promise, E-mail communication in the medical environment raises important questions of legal, ethical, and professional propriety. This article discusses the potential uses of E-mail in medical practice, identifies its benefits, and analyzes the hazards that may be associated with this new and powerful technology. In doing so, the authors hope to foster an approach to E-mail use that takes advantage of its strengths while developing policies and practices that mitigate its weaknesses. (C) 2000 by W.B. Practicing dentistry in the age of telemedicine

Background. This article examines teledentistry and some fits current legal issues, Topics include licensure, malpractice, technology and ethics General recommendations for the dental practitioner are included. The literature review includes state and federal laws, the Telemedicine Report ta Congress and numerous articles (both printed and electronic) associated with the topic;Sources were selected for timeliness and relevance to legal issues and implications of telemedicine/teledentistry for the dental practitioner. Conclusions, Numerous issues require resolution before telemedicine and teledentistry will truly realize their enormous potential to increase access to health care while decreasing health care costs. These issues include interstate licensure, jurisdiction and mal-practice, as well as technological, security and ethical questions, Practice Implications. Telemedicine teledentistry are relatively new to the dental field. Many of the legal issues reviewed have yet to be resolved by the legislature or the courts. Furthermore, technology has not yet progressed to the point where the practitioner can be certain that no technological failure will occur during a teledental consultation. In spite of these problems, the potential of telemedicine and teledentistry is tremendous. Improvement in accessibility of health care and lowered health care costs are only two of the many advantages that will emerge as telemedicine and teledentistry become integrated with, and fundamentally change, the practice of medicine and dentistry.

Biomedical publishing and the Internet: Evolution or revolution?

The Internet is challenging traditional publishing patterns. In the biomedical domain, medical journals are providing more and more content online, both free and for a fee. Beyond this, however, a number of commentators believe that traditional notions of copyright and intellectual property ownership are no longer suited to the information age and that ownership of copyright to research reports should be and will be wrested from publishers and returned to authors. In this paper, it is argued that, although the Internet will indeed profoundly affect the distribution of biomedical research results, the biomedical publishing industry is too intertwined with the research establishment and too powerful to fall prey to such a copyright revolution.

Biomedicine's electronic publishing paradigm shift: Copyright policy and PubMed Central

Biomedical publishing stands at a crossroads. The traditional print, peer-reviewed, subscription journal has served science well but is now being called into question. Because of spiraling print journal costs and the worldwide acceptance of the Internet as a valid publication medium, there is a compelling opportunity to re-examine our current paradigm and future options. This report illustrates the conflicts and restrictions inherent in the current publishing model and examines how the single act of permitting authors to retain copyright of their scholarly manuscripts may preserve the quality-control function of the current journal system while allowing PubMed Central, the Internet archiving system recently proposed by the director of the National Institutes of Health, to simplify and liberate access to the world's biomedical literature.
