CEPHALEXIN IN MANAGEMENT OF BACTERIURIA - RESULTS IN TREATMENT OF 93 CHILDREN

This report evaluates the effectiveness of cephalexin in the treatment of bacteriuria in 93 children. Cephalexin therapy eradicated sensitive organisms in 97 per cent of the cases regardless of recurrence, structural abnormality, or status of renal function. Nevertheless, recurrences with a new, resistant organism occurred significantly in certain patients, expecially those with major anatomic abnormalities, during a six-week follow-up period. The incidence of drug reactions was low.

Cephalexin compared with ampicillin in urinary tract infections in children

The efficacy of cephalexin compared to that of ampicillin has been studied in 92 children with urinary tract infections (UTI). In 26 patients more than one UTI was treated, the total number of infections treated being 118, 59 with cephalexin and 59 with ampicillin After cephalexin treatment 49 cases (84.5%) gave pathogen-free urinary samples compared to 37 cases (62.7% after ampicillin. Eseherichia coil was absent in the post-treatment urine samples of 33 patients out of 36 (91.6%) treated with cepha lexin and in 22 out of 40 patients (55.0%) treated with ampicillin. No side-effects to cephalexin were reported compared to an incidence of 15% in patients receiving ampicillin. © 1975 Oxford University Press.

The use of small doses of cephalexin (125 mg) in the management of recurrent urinary tract infection in women

Fifty women with a history of recurrent urinary tract infections were entered into a double-blind trial to investigate the prevention of recurrence of infection, Cephalexin 12.5 mg node was compared with placebo. During a 6-month follow-up period 13 of 25 women given the placebo had a recurrence of bacteriuria, whereas only 1 patient had a relapse whilst taking cephalexin. The results show that cephalexin 125 mg node is an efficient prophylactic for urinary infection, and is well tolerated by patients. © 1975 Oxford University Press.
