The role of the personal tutor in the academic context

This paper is the second of a series on the role of the nurse teacher and is based on a review of the literature and the personal experience of the authors. Identifying the most appropriate way to support students in both the academic and clinical setting has been a major concern for nurse teachers. The move of nurse education into the higher education arena has increased the diverse nature of the nurse teachers role and raised questions about the nature and function of the personal tutor in relation to students undertaking nursing courses. This paper discusses the concept of the personal tutor, with particular focus on the academic aspects of the role. The time implication of adopting an all encompassing personal tutor role, within the current climate of higher education, is considered. The paper also highlights that the roles tutors adopt in practice are diverse and usually as a result of convenience rather than identified outcomes. (C) 2000 Harcourt Publishers Ltd.

An evaluative study of clinical preceptorship

Clinical preceptorships, in collaboration between clinical agencies and educational institutions have been documented as an effective and innovative means of facilitating student learning, providing advantages for both the clinical and educational settings. A preceptorship programme of 100 hours duration was developed and delivered by the nurse education institute, in consultation with a health care organization. The objectives of the preceptorship programme were to help registered nurses, in partnership with clinical nurse educators, to effectively integrate, support and assist the development of clinical competence in the undergraduate nursing student. Following the implementation of the preceptorship programme a research study was conducted to evaluate programme effectiveness. The purpose of the study was to examine preceptors, preceptees, and nurse managers' preceptions of the preceptor role and factors which influenced the performance of preceptors. The methods used in this study included those commonly found in evaluation research. That is, participants were drawn from those who were involved, either directly or indirectly, in the preceptorship programme, namely preceptors, preceptees and nurse managers. Using focus groups, they were each asked to identify the outcomes of the programme in practice. Study findings highlighted the importance of formal preceptor preparation, which was shown to enhance teaching and learning opportunities for student preceptees, personal and professional development of the preceptors, and the promotion of positive partnerships between nurse educators and nurse practitioners. The need for formal recognition of the preceptor role in practice, particularly in relation to the provision of adequate time and resources, emerged from the study. The research findings enabled the development of an evaluative model of preceptorship, which highlights the intrinsic and extrinsic factors impacting on the preceptor role. (C) 2000 Harcourt Publish

Untangling the Web... barriers and benefits for nurse education... an Australian perspective

The Internet... a Web of information technology. The potential exists now and increasingly in the future to use this technology to deliver widely distributed, creative, innovative learning to students across vast distances and at times which suit individual needs. The implications of this technology for nurse education, and indeed health care in general, are exciting. The technology is growing at such a vast rate that it would be easy to blindly accept it and promote its use. However, there is a need to stop and consider some of the practical barriers to the use of this technology, particularly for nursing education. (C) 2000 Harcourt Publishers Ltd.

Articulation of pre-registration nursing courses in Western Sydney

This paper will describe a project, undertaken in 1996-1997, which sought to develop formal articulation arrangements between nursing education courses provided by Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions in Greater Western Sydney and the University of Western Sydney (UWS). The project sought to facilitate the access of TAFE-trained Enrolled Nurses (ENs)to UWS's Bachelor of Nursing (BN) courses and eliminate costly duplication in programs of study. Although conducted in Australia, the project generated insights of utility to colleagues in the UK, the USA and New Zealand, in particular, who are dealing with the effects of the 'knowledge explosion' and reductions in government funding to universities. The project comprised two stages. Stage 1 involved a statewide survey of ail stakeholders, using individual telephone interviews and focus groups, of practices and perceptions with respect to formal articulation arrangements. The findings demonstrated an overwhelming consensus with respect to both the benefits of and barriers to formal articulation arrangements. These benefits and barriers will be described. Stage 2 involved the TAFE-UWS collaborative design and implementation of 2 EN-BN bridging programs which allow, differentially, ENs to access UWS's BN programs with 1 and 2 semesters block credit. This paper includes details of the project's background, survey methods and findings, bridging courses' contents and courses' implementation evaluative data. (C) 2000 Harcourt Publishers Ltd.

Outcomes-based education in a critical care nursing course.

Educational institutions are being asked to develop more meaningful ways to measure student learning. The critical care nursing faculty at this baccalaureate institution have delineated a process of outcomes-based education that they use as evidence of successful learning in their course. The faculty regard this as an ongoing project in which this evidence can only lead to continuing improvement.

The development of empathy in students on a short, skills based counselling course: a pilot study

This paper reports on a pilot study to measure the development of empathy in students on a short skills-based counselling course. Thirty-eight students from a total population of 56 produced mean empathy scores prior to and following the counselling training. The results indicate that changes in levels of student empathy occurred in all but one of the students with a wide variation in the degree of change. Whilst the results obtained in this study in no way allow any firm conclusions to be drawn, they do provide tentative evidence that student empathy levels can increase as a consequence of undertaking a short skills-based counselling course and, further more, comprehensive research in this area is indicated. This apparent increase in students' empathy appears to be a positive development, yet it could also create difficulties for the nurse due to the possibility of increased emotional demands created by this empathy. Despite the arguments for attempting to develop empathy in students being robust, there may be some individuals who would argue that short skills-based counselling training does not enable empathic development in the students. Whilst the authors argue that there is a need to demystify counselling training, they in no way suggest that there is no need for lengthy, more intensive counselling training. There appears to be a case for having both forms of counselling training.

ASSET: a model for actioning spirituality and spiritual care education and training in nursing

This paper presents a model of spiritual care education. A definition of spirituality is offered, this is followed by a review of empirical studies on spirituality and nurse education which conclude that nurses' knowledge and skills related to spiritual care are impoverished because of a poor role preparation in this dimension of care. The asset model (actioning spirituality and spiritual Care education and training in Nursing) is recommended as a possible option for improving spiritual care education in nursing. It should prove to be a useful framework and catalyst in effecting change in nurses' knowledge and understanding of the spiritual care requirements of patients. Extensive details of this model are provided in this paper.

Life in the fast lane - An evaluation of an accelerated RN-MSN program

The Pew Health Commission on professional education has recommended innovative educational programs to promote career mobility among nurses. To assure continued quality of nursing education in the face of innovation, the Philip Y. Hahn School of Nursing conducted a comprehensive evaluation of its accelerated RN-MSN program. Designed to enhance career advancement in the profession, the program was evaluated after its fourth year of operation using the Discrepancy Evaluation Model (DEM). Based on comparison with both relative and absolute standards, the program shortened the time required to obtain BSN and MSN degrees and appeared to reverse declining enrollments in the baccalaureate nursing program. Accelerated students were as successful as other masters nursing students in specific courses and in the program in general. Adverse program effects included declining enrollments in some under-graduate courses and the increased complexity of advising.

The way forward for transcultural nursing

This paper suggests that the incorporation of a sociological perspective into transcultural nursing would enhance the present anthropological approach. The discussion considers the concept of ethnicity, which encompasses a wider perspective than that of culture alone, and is inclusive of both dominant and subordinate human social groupings. Anthropological understanding explores the beliefs and values of a particular community whereas sociological understanding reflects the position of that community within society and their associated experiences. The case is made by discussion of transcultural nursing, its roots in anthropology and the contribution that a sociological perspective can provide. Concepts of assimilation and acculturation are discussed, as is the adaptive nature of culture. A need for application of theoretical understanding to professional practice is demonstrated and a requirement for development of cultural competence is highlighted. The implications for curriculum development are discussed. This paper adopts a perspective that considers transcultural health care from the focal point of the user of health care service rather than the more usual dominant provider viewpoint. Supporting students' learning and professional development through the process of continuous assessment and mentorship

This paper is based on the results of two studies carried out by the writer, over a period of 6 years (1991-1996);aimed to establish what happens in nursing practice in relation to assessing clinical competence of nursing students and the support they receive during their Nurse Education Programme. Study number one (1991-1995) was based upon the experiences and perceptions of 155 skilled practitioners and 300 students from three Colleges of Nursing and 45 interested practitioners, who volunteered to join the research at a later date because they were experienced assessors and mentors. Many themes and categories emerged. One in particular was that of the role of the practitioner who has been charged with the responsibility of assessing student performance on practice placement. Initial interviews with 155 practitioners of varying experience as assessors were used to design a questionnaire containing both context free and context specific items. Subsequent follow-up interviews were undertaken with both students and practitioners and non-participant observation of practitioners working with students were carried out. The majority of students accepted the dual role and at times, even the triple role of assessors, mentors and/or supervisors forced upon practitioners, provided that the practitioners assessing them were well prepared and 'trained' as assessors, were perceived to be 'fair', 'competent', 'skilful' and 'knowledgeable' (Neary 1997a). Study two (1992-1994) aimed to establish the process and outcomes of practitioner-teachers and mentorship in Wales, and was based on the data from a much extended period of semistructured interviews with policy makers, managers, teachers and nurse practitioners (n = 360, 330 analyzed in detail) spanning 10 months, which gave an invaluable pictures of ongoing changes in the placement areas and the basis from which to construct a widely administered questionnaire (n = 1332) dealing with context-free and context-specific factors unde
