Preventing young worker fatalities. The Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation (FACE) Program.

During the period between 1992 through 1998, the Bureau of Labor Statistics identified an average of 67 work related deaths of individuals younger than 18 each year. This article describes the Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation (FACE) program and summarizes indepth data collected on 59 young worker fatalities in 26 states. These investigations were conducted between May 1986 and February 2002. Young workers ranged in age from 9 to 17 years, with a mean age of 15.3 years: 21 were working in the agriculture, forestry, and fishing industry;12 in construction;10 in manufacturing;8 in services;and 8 in the retail industry. The majority worked as laborers. Ninety-three percent were young men. Each investigation resulted in the formulation and dissemination of strategies to help prevent future similar occurrences. As an example of state FACE activities, the article describes the Wisconsin FACE program's efforts to foster collaboration between regulatory agencies, researchers, educators, and occupational safety and health professionals, and to integrate efforts aimed at improving safety for young workers.

Role of education in reducing child labour: Evidence from rural Bangladesh

This paper explores the hypothesis that the level of education of children and their parents plays a major role in reducing child labour. Data were generated from a sample survey of 3809 children aged 10-14 years living in 150 villages in two rural districts of Bangladesh. A significant inverse relationship was found between child labour and years of schooling. Age and education of children, parental education, land ownership of household and fathers' occupation were the determinants of child labour force participation. Child's years of schooling is the variable that has most influence on the probability of participation in the labour force, followed by father's and mother's education.

Accelerated second degree advanced practice nurses: How do they fare in the job market?

Accelerated, nontraditional, advanced practice nursing programs are an alternative way to increase the supply of nurse practitioners. This study profiles demographic and job characteristics of second degree, non-nurse college graduates who pursued graduate degrees in nursing. Graduates' sex, age, income, previous education, nursing experience, factors describing the scope of the advanced practice role, and quality of the educational experience were studied. Data were collected from 29 graduates (57%) from Virginia Commonwealth University's accelerated second-degree nursing program from 1995 through 1999, The findings have implications for nursing educators, health care administrators, employers, and other persons who plan and recruit for this type of nursing education program.

Health Insurance Coverage in U.S. Urban and Rural Areas

Abstract: This study examines the health insurance coverage of the nonelderly population in U.S. urban and rural areas in 1989, using data from the March 1990 Current Population Survey conducted by the Bureau of the Census. Access to coverage was assessed by classifying all persons by family employment status and income. Rural residents had less access to coverage than urban residents but were only slightly less likely to be insured. In comparison to urban residents, fewer rural residents obtained coverage through employment, and more purchased private coverage outside the work place. The differences in coverage by family employment status and income were generally much greater than the differences by place of residence. Copyright © 1993, Wiley Blackwell. All rights reserved

ASSESSING HOSPITAL NURSING STAFF RETENTION AND TURNOVER - A LIFE TABLE APPROACH

This research applied the life table technique to nursing personnel data in two types of hospitals to illustrate how administrators can examine patterns of continued employment. Although a large proportion of nurses were short-stay employees, the teaching hospital was found to have a higher retention rate than the community hospital corporation. The retention patterns are examined by personal and professional characteristics, as well as by reason for termination. Implications of our findings are discussed with respect to policy concerns related to hiring, retention, productivity, and staff development.

Job continuity among new mothers

In the early 1990s, both state and federal governments enacted maternity-leave legislation. The key provision of that legislation is that after a leave of a limited duration, the recent mother is guaranteed the right to return to her preleave employer at the same or equivalent position. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, we correlate work status after childbirth with work status before pregnancy to estimate the prevalence, before the legislation, of returns to the preleave employer. Among women working full-time before the pregnancy, return to the prepregnancy employer was quite common. Sixty percent of women who worked full-time before the birth of a child continued to work for the same employer after the child was born. Furthermore, the labor market behavior of most of the remaining 40% suggests that maternity-leave legislation is unlikely to have a major effect on job continuity Compared with all demographically similar women, however;new mothers have an excess probability of leaving their jobs.
