Reports of foodborne disease incidents in Sweden from 1992 to 1997 are summarized. The results are based on reports from the municipal environmental and public health authorities to the National Food Administration and from medical authorities to the Swedish Institute for Infectious Diseases Control. A total of 555 incidents, of which 84% were outbreaks, were reported, involving 11,076 ill people. In 66% of the incidents, no disease agent was determined. Bacterial agents were implicated in 25% and viruses in 8% of the incidents. Calicivirus was the most reported agent both in terms of incidents and cases. Mixed dishes was the food category most often implicated in outbreaks, and smorgasbord and casserole or stews were the subcategories that caused the most cases. The place of consumption was unknown in 8% of the incidents. In about 60% of the incidents, the implicated food was consumed in commercial food establishments;in approximately 20% of incidents, it was consumed at home. The average annual incidence of reported foodborne disease in Sweden was estimated to be 21 cases per 100,000. The average annual incidence of reported foodborne salmonellosis and campylobacteriosis was estimated to be 2.0 and 0.6 cases per 100,000, respectively. The awareness and motivation to report foodborne diseases need to be improved, but additional sources of information are needed to counteract some of the limitations of reporting discussed in this work.

Norwalk and "Norwalk-like viruses" (NLV) have emerged as the most important viral pathogens in epidemic outbreaks of foodborne gastroenteritis. Recent developments in molecular detection have shown that infections and disease caused by NLV are more prevalent than originally recognized. Most outbreak sources can be traced to nn infected food handler or sewage contaminated water. Increased surveillance and further epidemiologic studies are critical to continue to assess the risks and devise mechanisms to control outbreaks and persistence of NLV gastroenteritis.

The first molecular epidemiological study of Rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus undertaken in France between 1988 and 1995, identified three genogroups, two of which (G1, G2) disappeared quickly. We used immunocapture-RT-PCR and sequencing to analyse 104 new RHDV isolates collected between 1993 and 2000. One isolate was obtained in 2000 from a French overseas territory, the Reunion Island. The nucleotide sequences of these isolates were aligned with those of some French RHDV isolates representative of the three genogroups previously identified, of some reference strains and German and American RHDV antigenic variants. Despite the low degree of nucleotide sequence variation, three new genogroups (G4 to G6) were identified with significant bootstrap values. Two of these genogroups (G4 and G5) were related to the year in which the RHDV isolates were collected. Genogroup G4 emerged from genogroup G3, which has now disappeared. Genogroup G5 is a new independent group. The genogroup G6 contained an isolate collected in mainland France in 1999 and the isolate collected from the Reunion Island, as well as German and American RHDV variants. Multiple sequence alignments of the VP60 gene and antigenic analysis with monoclonal antibodies demonstrated that these French isolates are two new isolates of the RHDV variant.
