The HealthWise Stepped Intervention Study (1988-1990) at Pacific Gas and Electric was conducted to evaluate how a health promotion program affects behavior change and whether increasing levels of preventive interventions improve health status. The basic intervention components consisted of health risk assessment and health newsletter (Levels 1, 2, 3, and 4). Additional interventions were health resource center and self-care books (Levels 2, 3, and 4), behavioral change workshops and Division Healthwise team (Levels 3 and 4), and case managment and environmental policy (Level 4). The study employed a quasi-experimental design with nonequivalent control groups. The overall risk status has significantly improved at all four intervention levels. The comparison across the four intervention levels found that Level 4, combining environmental policy with "high risk" targeting, showed the most impressive performance. Participants in Level 4 consistently showed significantly greater improvement in life-style factors, and their overall risk status also showed the greatest improvement.

Strategic planning activities can, to varying degrees be anticipatory or hindsight in orientation. Anticipatory activities prepare the firm for future strategic surprises and enhance the firm's effectiveness in dealing with turbulence and unpredictability in the external environment. Hindsight activities on the other hand, rely greatly on ex-post analysis (of information on past events), emphasize efficiency in key processes and operations, and are predicated on reasonable continuity and stability in the external environment. While both sets of activities are necessary to maintain the balance between effectiveness and efficiency, a relatively greater emphasis on one set or the other is crucial under different degrees of environmental turbulence and unpredictability. Informed implementation of the appropriate degrees of anticipatory and hindsight orientations through differentially emphasizing separate sets of strategic planning activities should enable managers to exercise better strategic control and optimize the firm's short-run performance as well as long-term prospects.

An estimated 70 percent of illicit drug users are in the workforce. This paper studies workplace policies relating to drug abuse treatment and testing in a labor market with asymmetric information about worker proclivities to abuse drugs and to incur costs of workplace accidents. Drug abuse has a moral hazard component related to worker choice of treatment or other deterrent activities, and a selection component related to drug testing. We characterize the type and frequency of workers treated and tested in labor market equilibrium. Labor market incentives will generally lead to too little treatment and too much testing.

However, if the CEO fails to recognize these macro‐trends, it could mean corporate death. INTERACT is a quarterly mental health and substance abuse newsletter for employees brought to market by the Psychology Exchange (Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania). INTERACT provides 4 pages of brief solutions-oriented articles, covering an array of psychological topics written for the lay reader. With a subscription to INTERACT a company could upgrade its employees' thinking about psychosocial issues and help to bring mental health issues out in the open. Subscribing to a mental health newsletter is a tacit endorsement for early intervention and the de-stigmatization of psychological problems. Market tests were conducted to study target populations and sales letters. The initial response from most subscribing companies was cautious experimentation. Initial orders were fewer and thinner than expected, but encouraging. A campaign directed at a single high stress occupation, law enforcement, resulted in immediate orders.
