Evaluating the effectiveness of a smoking cessation intervention designed for nurses

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of offering an individualised approach to smoking cessation to qualified nurses and student nurses in Northern Ireland, Twenty-two qualified nurses and 32 student nurses enrolled in the intervention. A further 23 qualified nurses and 33 student nurses expressed interest in giving up smoking, bur did not wish to be included in the intervention, They were assigned to the comparison group. Objective verification utilising salivary cotinine measurements of continuous abstinence at 6 months and 1 year demonstrated that 24% of student and qualified nurses in the intervention groups stopped smoking compared with 7% of those in the comparison groups. Both of these differences are statistically significant (Fisher's Exact Probability Test p = < 0.05). This suggests that the individualised approach as used in this study is an appropriate method of helping motivated nurses to quit. (C) 1999 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Age and 'type' of domain specific entry qualifications as predictors of student nurses' performance in biological, social and behavioural sciences in nursing assessments

The present study explored the effects of age and 'type' of entry qualifications in psychology, sociology and biology on student performance in 'the psychological, sociological and biological perspectives in nursing' module assessments, respectively. Data from 222 students undertaking 'the pre-registration diploma in nursing' programme at a university in the north West of England were analysed. The study found no significant differences in performance among those students with CCSE 'O' level, those with access and those without any type of domain specific qualifications. However, student age significantly predicted performance, with such performances found to be highly consistent across the three modules. The 'non-mature' students (aged <20 years) were identified in the study as being at risk in terms of academic performance whilst the 'very mature' students (aged >34 years) were found to predict better overall performance. The findings suggest that, paper qualifications such as GCSE O. level, GNVQ or BTEC in psychology, sociology or biology should not be relied upon as predictors of academic performance in their related nursing modules when selecting potential nurses. On the basis of the findings and their probable explanations, it seems possible that the entry gate to nursing can further be widened by giving more credit to the older applicant who has, for example, achieved NVQ at level 2 or 3. However, such flexibility in nurse selection will have to be matched with equal flexibility in the pre-registration diploma in nursing curriculum which at present fails to recognize 'at risk' groups. The findings and the implications for nurse education and recruitment are discussed with support from a growing number of studies investigating student approaches to studying and learning. Nurses--their information needs and use of libraries: the views of some librarians.

An overview of the information needs of nurses is followed by a description of the findings of the Information Seeking Behaviour of Nurses Project. A brief comparison is made with the perceptions that librarians have of nurses' information-seeking activity followed by a more detailed discussion of the ways that librarians consider that nurses' use of libraries could be improved. It is concluded that library provision and use can be improved only by co-operation between nurses, students, educators, librarians and managers.

Discontinuation, leaving reasons and course evaluation comments of students on the common foundation programme

There is considerable financial incentive, at all levels, to reduce student nurse wastage and maintain recruitment to a workforce of professional nurses. This strategy is being pursued in a period following major educational change, when the attrition levels and leaving reasons of students need to be reassessed. Previous reports have identified a high voluntary loss of students on the common foundation programme (CFP) of the pre-registration nursing course. In order to achieve a better understanding of the basic problems faced by student nurses who consider leaving the CFP, questionnaires were distributed to three groups of students: current CFP students;students who had completed the CFP;and students who had discontinued training. The questionnaire responses show that course-based problems, identified as prime leaving reasons by the current and completed student groups, differ from the actual leaving reasons of discontinued students obtained by exit questionnaire. The attitudes of participating and discontinued students to theory, clinical and pastoral components of the CFP are not dissimilar. Some trends in attrition rate relate significantly to student category. Our results have implications for the management of student nurse attrition.

Student discontinuations: is the system failing?

Are nurse educators guilty of hypocrisy? While espousing holism and evidence-based practice, we may be neglecting to support The most distressed and vulnerable in our care-students. Student discontinuation arouses strong emotions, which need to be expressed and resolved. These are often unresolved leaving students and educators frustrated and alienated in 'failure'. Although it cannot be expected that all students will succeed as professionals and academic standards must be maintained, those who fail have a right to expect fairness. With the advent of Subject Quality Review (formally TQA) institutions of higher education may be asked to demonstrate their operational mechanisms for 'managing' the process of student failure. Now would be the best time for departments of nurse education to reflect on experience, review attrition rates and learn from each other in order to establish a model of best practice. Such a review may generate the formulation of national guidelines, safe guarding against the looming threat of litigation. (C) 1999 Harcourt Publishers Ltd.
