Future directions for gerontology: a nursing perspective

This paper discusses the contribution nursing has made to the development of person-centred services, and the influence of gerontology upon such developments. It examines traditional attitudes to medicine and nursing, when curing was all-important and caring treated as secondary and the shift away from this attitude to a more holistic approach to nursing, where the dignity of the patient is an important issue. it argues that good practice utilizes different sources of knowledge, including intuitive knowledge, and discusses the integrated programme of policy, development, research and education activities that the Royal College of Nursing is developing. The options currently available to anyone wishing to study gerontology are discussed, and the pros and cons of the current emphasis on broad-based clinical and educational experience prior to specialization analysed. The key aim of the RCN is to develop the specialism of gerontological nursing and the quality of care experienced by older people. With this end in view, this paper describes the education programme being developed by the RCN, leading to the award of Gerontological Nurse Specialist - a person able to demonstrate knowledge of rehabilitation, clinical assessment, health care assessment and a holistic knowledge of the ageing process. One of the North Thames' pioneering consortia, the Inner London Consortium (ILC) is a complex body which includes NHS Trusts with teaching hospital university connections, community-based Trusts and general hospital acute Trusts. Within the consortium there are 12,000 trained nurses, midwives, health visitors and other professional staff working in the professions allied to medicine (PAMs), all of whom require access to and provision of appropriate library information services. In 1994, taking into account experiences elsewhere in the Region and nationally, it became clear that library issues were complex and would become acute with the move of nursing libraries from ILC Trust sites over a very short timescale. A report on the issues commissioned by the Consortium recommended that a library project, which built on existing NHS Trust PGMDE funded library resources and moved these to a multidisciplinary base to serve the consortium membership, be implemented. The objective of providing access to library information services for nurses and PAMs was achieved. Successes that emerged from the implementation included: The registration in Trust libraries of almost 12 000 new members within the initial 6-month monitoring period. The development of service level agreements and standards for the delivery of services to these new user groups. This paper describes the processes behind these significant and complex changes.

The Holistic Nurses Association (HNA) of New South Wales was formed in March 1995 by nurses inspired by the inaugural Natural Therapies Conference held by the New South Wales Nurses Association (NSWNA) in October 1994. A philosophy of providing support to nurses wishing to provide healthcare in a holistic way underpinned the formation of the HNA in a climate of disenchantment with the mechanistic and reductionist methods of modern healthcare. The main aims of the group are to share information, meet regularly for support, identify our goals and to organize presentations and workshops that promote and strengthen our professional goals and identity. The HNA has been recognised as a group to consult with regarding policy formation for the use of natural therapies within the mainstream health service. The Nurses Registration Board of New South Wales and the New South Wales Nurses Association both liaised with HNANSW when formulating their policies on the use of complementary therapies in nursing. © 2000 Harcourt Publishers Ltd.

Discussion paper--proposed national organisation for critical care nurses in Australia.

The following discussion outlines the various issues considered in the process of working towards establishing a single, national professional organisation for critical care nurses throughout Australia. This paper outlines the background and results of the previous survey and summarises the salient features of the draft constitution. The proposed structure of CACCN Inc. under the new national organisation is diagrammatically represented in Appendix 1, with the full draft constitution available on the CACCN Web site at or by contacting the national office.

With the current purchaser/provider split in the NHS the purchaser has a responsibility to evaluate the quality of services provided by the provider. In the past year the Northern and Yorkshire Regional Health Authority expressed an interest in auditing library services supplied from selected education providers. This article attempts to given an account of the experience and focuses on the background, the rationale, the process and the outcomes.

This is the third in a series of three articles devoted to the development, implementation, and evaluation of the National Association of School Nurses 1998-2001 Strategic Plan and how it relates to the practice of school nursing. Information regarding the extent to which each of the seven goals in the Strategic Plan has been met, and the future efforts in developing the 2001-2004 Strategic Plan will be reviewed. Areas of focus of the new NASN leaders and the priorities of the NASN management and Board of Directors will shape the future goals of the organization. The new definition of the practice of school nursing, the NASN Mission Statement, and the current Strategic Plan goals will drive the development of the next Strategic Plan. NASN leaders have a firm grasp on the future direction of the organization and are available and responsive to assist individual members and state affiliates in managing change and empowering school nurses to meet the challenges of the future.
