In 1994 the Department of Health commissioned a survey of early feeding practices within the Asian community. The survey conducted by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) was designed to assess from a nationally representative sample of infants from the Bangladeshi, Indian and Pakistani communities from across England their feeding practices from birth to 15 months. A small sample of White infants were also included in the sample although they cannot be considered as nationally representative of the majority White population in England. Data was collected from 2382 mothers in total. The survey was carried out between 1994 and 1996 and was published in 1997. This article will summarise the main findings relevant to oral health. These include patterns of breastfeeding, use of bottles, care and advice on infant feeding, weaning practices and drinks consumption. Implications for oral health promotion are considered.

Objective: To identify environmental barriers to breastfeeding. Method: Focus groups were conducted with young women, parents-to-be. mothers, fathers and grandmothers in 1996 in northern Adelaide, South Australia (a low socio-economic area). Results: Seven focus groups (4-8 participants per group) were conducted. Breastfeeding was seen as being embarrassing to do in public, and not possible to combine with paid employment. While fathers were not supportive of their partners breastfeeding in public, health professionals were seen as strong advocates of breastfeeding. Bottle feeding was perceived to be more convenient for the mother, more acceptable in public but not as good as breastfeeding for the baby. Conclusion: An environment that enables women to breastfeed is far from being achieved in this low socio-economic area. particularly in relation to breastfeeding in public. Implications: Breastfeeding promotion should have a public health focus, concentrating on creating a supportive breastfeeding environment through a multi strategy approach aimed not just at mothers but also at the community.

In Australia, the prevalence and duration of breastfeeding is on the decline. The low incidence of breastfeeding includes the immigrant Vietnamese. The purpose of this study was to examine Vietnamese women's perceptions of factors that might influence their choice of infant feeding and how breastfeeding could be promoted and maintained by nurses, midwives, other health professionals, and the health care system as a whole. A convenience sample of 124 postnatal Vietnamese women from community agencies in western and southwestern suburbs of Sydney was interviewed. Content analysis showed that factors that affect their choice of infant feedings method were language difficulties in communicating with health professionals concerning breastfeeding, lack of social support and follow-up can, and attitudes of health professionals toward breastfeeding. To promote and maintain breastfeeding within the Vietnamese community in Sydney, Australia, appropriate health care planning and implementation based on their social, cultural, and language backgrounds and practices need to be considered.
