EEG ALPHA RHYTHM, OCULAR ACTIVITY AND BASAL SKIN RESISTANCE

Most hypotheses about the origin of the occipital alpha rhythm stress the specific influence of ocular activity. In this study, the influence of eye-movement frequency and extreme upward deviation of the eyeballs (enlarging the corneo-retinal potential) on occipital alpha activity and basal skin resistance is investigated. Eye-movement frequency did not significantly influence alpha activity and basal skin resistance. On the other hand, extreme upward deviation of the eyeball resulted in alpha activity enhancement and BSR increase. A white noise stimulus, given while the eyeballs were in an extreme upward position lead to a significant decrease in both alpha activity and BSR. However, the influence of the white noise condition was relatively larger on BSR than on alpha activity. The results of this study lead to the hypothesis that the extreme deviation of the eyeballs effects occipital alpha activity in two different ways; one is a direct influence from the eyes, along a low conductance pathway to the occipital region, according to Ennever; secondly, it is proposed that, during the extreme upward deviation of the eyeballs, inhibitory impulses from extra-ocular muscle receptors are sent down to the reticular formation leading to alpha activity increase (e.g. cortical arousal decrease).

Human movement-related brain potentials preceding voluntary movements in different arousal states monitored with skin potential level

The present study investigated the readiness potential (RP) preceding a brisk extension of the right middle finger during different arousal states as monitored by skin potential level (SPL). The late component of the readiness potential in the medium arousal state was significantly larger than those in the low and high arousal states. This finding indicates that the RP waveform may vary as a function of arousal states, suggesting the inverse U-shaped relationship proposed in studies of the contingent negative variation.

Emotionality of words as related to vividness of imagery and concreteness

We investigated the association of the imagery and concreteness of words on their emotionality. Emotionality was evaluated on the basis of skin conductance. A total of 61 subjects (all university students) rated the vividness of imagery and concreteness of the words in a list of 25 word pairs. Each pair was comprised of one abstract word and one concrete word with a related meaning, e.g., "friendship" and "friend," thereby controlling meaning. The skin-conductance response of each word was measured subsequently from these same subjects. Our results show thar both imagery and concreteness were significantly related to emotionality.

Pilot study on the relationship between personality traits and skin conductivity of specific surface points as measured by Motoyama's apparatus

This pilot study used Motoyama's electrodermal response-measuring apparatus to test resting skin conductivity from 28 extremity digit surface coordinates of 33 subjects who also were administered the Eysenck Personality Inventory on an alternatively assigned basis for the dimensions of extraversion and neuroticism. Correlations show significant relationships between neuroticism and extraversion raw scores on two of the 14 bilateral finger surface coordinates.

Autonomic physiological activity in mental rotation tasks

The electrodermal response (EDR) during a mental rotation (MR) task performance was investigated. For 6 males and 8 females (16-25 years old) there was a progressive increase in the number of EDRs as the angle of rotation (complexity) of dir task was increased. These results support previous findings that autonomic physiological activity varies with the amount of information processing or its difficulty.

Effect of reversed light-dark cycle on skin conductance in male rats

Reversal of light-dark cycle was used to investigate the effect of the circadian changes on skin conductance, a tonic electrodermal activity parameter, in rats. Rats were adapted for 3 wk. to one of two lighting programs. The animals on the normal cycle were illuminated from 08.00-20.00;on the reverse cycle, from 20.00-08.00. Although during Week 1 to Week 3, skin conductance increased gradually in both groups, this increase was more dramatic in rats adapted to light from 20.00 to 08.00 than in the other group. When the animals on the reverse cycle were readjusted to a normal circadian cycle for 3 weeks, skin conductance decreased gradually to initial values. At Weeks 1, 2, 3, and 6, skin conductance was significantly higher in rats on the reverse light-dark cycle than in those on the normal cycle. The present data suggest that changes in normal light-dark conditions affect skin conductance in rats.

Relationship between properties of words and elicitation of skin conductance response

We investigated the association of subject-rated imagery, subject-rated concreteness, subject-rated emotionality, frequency, date of entry into the language, and word length with emotional imagery as measured by the skin conductance response elicited by that word. 50 words in a list of 24 word-pairs were rated by 96 university students;then their skin conductance response of each word was measured for each word. In each pair, one word was concrete and one was abstract but with related meaning, e.g., adolescent and adolescence. Stepwise multiple regression indicated that 30% of variance in the later skin conductance response was explained by imagery and subject-rated emotionality. Imagery alone explained 24% of variance.
