The study evaluated the effectiveness of mental health center treatments for children aged 5-12 years. The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) was administered before and after treatment to the parents of the treatment group (N = 71). The results were analyzed and compared to the results of the pretest and posttest CBCL administered to the parents of a matched group of comparison subjects (N = 33). The results showed that the treatment subjects significantly improved on both the externalizing and internalizing scales of the CBCL. The controls showed no significant change between pretest and posttest scores. As a result, it appears that clinic treatments can help clients with measurable problems decrease problematic behaviors. More data is needed to determine whether clinic treatments such as the ones described in this study can substantially help the most seriously disturbed school-age children.

Construct validity of the Attitudes About Reality Scale

To explore the construct validity of the Attitudes About Reality Scale, a measure of personal epistemology grounded on a social constructionist to logical positivist continuum. 118 employees of a mental health center completed the Attitudes About Reality Scale, three subscales of the Interpersonal Reactivity Inventory as a measure of empathy, the Social Interest Inventory as a measure of the Adlerian social interest concept, the Multistimulus Types Ambiguity Tolerance-I as a measure of tolerance for ambiguity, the Right Wing Authoritarianism Scale. and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale. Significant correlations were found between scores on the Attitudes About Reality Scale and both The Right Wing Authoritarianism Scare and Multiple Stimulus Types Ambiguity Tolerance-I as hypothesized. Those individuals holding master's and doctoral degrees scored significantly lower on the Attitudes About Reality Scale in the social constructionist direction than those with technical or trade school education, but no other differences on demographic measures were noted.

The effect of training in a strengths model of case management on client outcomes in a community mental health center

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect on client outcomes produced by training case managers in a strengths model of case management. Outcomes of interest included client's quality of life, vocation/education, residential living, hospitalization rate, hospital days, and symptoms. It also compared the results obtained by the strengths model with results of a generalist model. Case managers at the experimental site were trained in the strengths model. Those at the control site received no training. Data were collected at both sites prior to training and three months later Improvement in quality of life, symptoms, and vocational/educational outcomes were found in the experimental group. Quality of life and vocational/educational outcomes were better in the experimental group than in the control group.

Comparing outcomes for diverted and nondiverted jail detainees with mental illnesses

Jail diversion programs have been proposed for use with persons with mental illnesses. While much support exists for these programs in theory, little is known about their characteristics, the individuals they divert, or their effectiveness. The current study focuses on identifying the characteristics of persons diverted through a court-based program in one midwestern city and their outcomes during the first 2 months after diversion. Information on participants (n = 80) was gathered through detainee interviews, staff interviews, and record abstracts. Two factors appear to be important in diversion: (I) community risk and (2) availability of specialized programs for diverted offenders. Demographic, clinical, and social context variables appear to influence diversion decisions. Overall, the diverted and nondiverted groups did approximately the same upon release, but one third of the nondiverted group never got released during the follow-up.

Work and social support: A comparison of consumers who have achieved stability in ACT and clubhouse programs

A current debate in the field is whether consumers, who have achieved stability in Assertive Community Treatment programs, can be transferred to less intensive services. To bring some data to bear on this question, this study compared consumers and members, who have achieved stability, in either an Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) or a clubhouse program, on domains of vocational activity, social relationships/loneliness and community integration. The 51 stable clients from the two programs who were interviewed, reported similar vocational activity, similar experiences with social relationships and social networks, and similar community integration. Clients in both groups were less lonely than previously reported in the literature. Study results indicate, that for those clients who have achieved stability, there are sufficient similarities between consumers in the two programs, to suggest a potential for movement from more to less intensive programs with less disruption than previously assumed possible.

Suicide is a major health problem. In the industrialized nations, it remains among the 10 leading causes of death. There has been a massive effort to reduce suicide mortality through establishment of prevention centers. These centers have proliferated despite a lack of evidence concerning their efficacy The development and evaluation of suicide prevention centers, primarily community-based, telephone interventions, are discussed. The evidence regarding the effectiveness of suicide prevention centers and the presence of a causal relationship between exposure to crisis counseling and a reduction in suicide rates is reviewed. Some cautions and recommendations are made. Finally, a model of health promotion program planning and evaluation is examined in the context of suicide prevention.
