Getting scientists together: the ACR/EULAR exchange programme.

Meeting the demand for a forum for young rheumatologists, the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) and the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) established an exchange programme in 1997 between European and American scientists in the field of rheumatology. A very interesting morning session consisted of presentations by the heads of the division and clinical scientists giving an overview of their current work. [...]Drs Paul Plotz, Daniel Kastner, Peter Lipsky, Rocky Tuan, Gabor Illei, and Raphaela Goldbach-Mansky provided insights into a wide variety of research topics ranging from autoimmune diseases to tissue engineering.

Information services for primary care: the organizational culture of general practice and the information needs of partnerships and primary care groups.

In a primary-care led National Health Service it is imperative for librarians not only to develop user-centred services for health professionals based in the community but also to facilitate information management within Primary Care Groups. In this article recent research in the field is discussed, and challenges intrinsic to delivering information services to primary care are identified. Drawing on the experience of one Practice Librarian in the Aylesbury area, the importance of organizational culture is considered, along with its implications for making successful approaches to partnerships. Five factors that motivated these practices to contract the services of an independent librarian are identified. The information needs of Primary Care Groups are discussed and the essential characteristics of future service provision are noted.

Genetics education for primary care providers in community health settings

Patients who are in need of genetic services are often inappropriately managed, in part due to inadequate knowledge of genetic issues among primary health care providers. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a genetics education program on the knowledge and attitudes of primary care providers in community health settings. A total of one hundred twenty-one primary care providers who work in Texas Public Health Region VIII participated in an educational program designed to provide basic genetics information. A one-group pretest-posttest design was used to assess knowledge and attitudes of subjects, and comparisons were made pre and post intervention. Pretest assessment revealed less than adequate knowledge about basic genetic principles and relatively positive attitudes among the subjects. Following the program, there were statistically significant increases in both knowledge about genetic conditions (P = .001) and attitudes toward provision of genetic services (P = .001). These results indicate that primary health care providers, motivated to learn complex materials and new skills in order to assist their patients, can do so in a relatively short time period.

Research based nursing practice - an evaluation of an educational programme

Although research based practice is being increasingly extolled by both the government and the profession, no clear educational strategy exists as to how practitioners should be supported in achieving this goal. Furthermore, the effectiveness of educational interventions in fostering a positive attitude to research, or a change towards a greater prevalence of research based practice, remains unknown. However, research has indicated that practitioners are dissatisfied with their research skills and the opportunities to enhance them. This paper describes a series of nine workshops on research utilization which were undertaken in a range of Trusts throughout England. The primary purpose of the workshops was to help nurses, health visitors and midwives to: Critically appraise research Implement research in their place of work. The workshops were evaluated by two methods - a written semi-structured questionnaire and a qualitative study focused on three sites which used pre-workshop telephone interviews and post-workshop focus groups. Overall the workshops were effective in reducing fear and lack of understanding of research, alleviating the problem of jargon, and increasing the skills of critical appraisal. Although the participants' attitude to research was not changed by attending the workshops - it was positive before the workshop and remained so-several personal and professional benefits were accrued. The implications of this evaluation for practice, education, and research are discussed. (C) 2000 Harcourt Publishers Ltd.

A clash of cultures: A&E and mental health

Accident and emergency (A&E) departments have attracted little attention from psychiatric services, with the exception of emergencies and the management of self harm. Emergency staff gravitate towards those attenders with concrete physical needs, typifying mental health attenders as low status. The aim of this project, which took place over a 12 month period, was to improve the quality of care provided to persons attending an A&E department with mental health needs, through a staff development programme. It was initiated for the generic A&E nurse with no formal training in mental health care. The programme was based on knowledge generated through a collaborative approach using an action research process. This article particularly focuses on the mindsets, values and strategies which evolved through the study. The project indicated that facets of the A&E culture such as staff values, technology, communication patterns and the environment give mental health a low status. Conflict is generated between the individual and the macro culture, dominated by the excitement of trauma care and the short-term, immediate nature of the work. © 2000 Harcourt Publishers Ltd.
