AIDS is a contemporary phenomena that has been extensively covered by the media but its impact on the employers of the sufferers is only now being measured and assessed. This article describes the personnel policies that have been developed by one particular organization to deal with the problem. Educational and training programmes have been initiated and management given clear directives to ensure that high morale and productivity are maintained during potentially adverse situations.

The Republic of Korea has undergone rapid industrialization since the first 5-year Socioeconomic Development flan started in 1962. Numerous industrial complexes have emerged and the number of industrial workers has been increasing steadily. Along with industrial development, the numbers of cases of industrial accidents and occupational diseases, particularly noise-induced hearing loss, pneumoconiosis, and occupational diseases caused by old and newly introduced chemicals, have been increasing. These phenomena have increased social concern for occupational diseases;conflicts between employers and employees;workers' consciousness on health matters;the number of manpower and academic societies, institutions, and organizations devoted to occupational health;and the attitude of employers and government to occupational health service and have activated the labor movement.

Study objective: We describe and analyze a recent rapid deployment of disaster medical assistance teams and other government agencies to provide medical screening and anthrax prophylaxis to New York City US Postal Service employees potentially exposed to letters contaminated with anthrax spores. Methods: A description of the response effort is presented. Data were collected on standardized forms and included the numbers of postal employees screened and offered antibiotic prophylaxis, as well as the numbers of patients seen per worker hour by various medical professionals. Results: One hundred members of 5 disaster medical assistance teams and other health professionals were deployed to New York City within 18 hours of activation. Over a 68-hour period, 7,076 patients were evaluated, representing all postal employees in the 6 major postal facilities in New York believed to be at risk for anthrax exposure. Of the total, 2,452 patients were seen during the first 24 hours, 3,875 during the second 24 hours, and the remaining 749 during the last 20 hours of operations. An average of 161 employees were screened per hour. The antibiotic most commonly dispensed was ciprofloxacin, followed by doxycycline and amoxicillin. Conclusion: The deployment of disaster medical assistance teams and other agencies to New York City to provide prophylaxis against inhalation anthrax to US Postal Service employees provides lessons for a rapid, efficient, and effective response to acts of bioterrorism. This deployment might also serve as a scaleable model for future events requiring medical prophylaxis.

The unique collaboration of the UCSF School of Medicine with community and national leaders in corporate health promotion has, in less than three years, made the Corporate Health Promotion Research Program a valuable resource to participating corporations. We are able to offer them sound consultation on health promotion programs, based on state-of-the-art research, at minimal cost to the employer or employees. In addition, we are educating employers about quality programs and the process and need for evaluation, in an effort to generate sound findings on the effects of corporate health promotion programs. Corporations are beginning to see that instead of being reactive and spending great sums of money only after employees become ill, it makes good sense to institute programs designed to prevent employees from becoming ill in the first place. With such programs, corporations not only improve the health of their employees (a worthy objective in its own right), but they contribute to containing medical costs at the same time--a clear "win-win" situation for all concerned. In short, corporations are finding that an ongoing, active interest in the health of their employees has a direct bearing on their own long-range health as a business. With this in mind, we feel that medical benefit plans of the future will be comprised of three elements: medical care plus cost-containment plus health promotion programs. With this order of complexity, no one company or professional organization has all the answers--and that should be acknowledged from the outset.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

INTERACT is a quarterly mental health and substance abuse newsletter for employees brought to market by the Psychology Exchange (Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania). INTERACT provides 4 pages of brief solutions-oriented articles, covering an array of psychological topics written for the lay reader. With a subscription to INTERACT a company could upgrade its employees' thinking about psychosocial issues and help to bring mental health issues out in the open. Subscribing to a mental health newsletter is a tacit endorsement for early intervention and the de-stigmatization of psychological problems. Market tests were conducted to study target populations and sales letters. The initial response from most subscribing companies was cautious experimentation. Initial orders were fewer and thinner than expected, but encouraging. A campaign directed at a single high stress occupation, law enforcement, resulted in immediate orders.

Substance abuse among working adults represents billions of dollars in preventable health cave costs and industry financial loss. Therefore, it is imperative to develop and test effective substance abuse prevention programs for the workplace. However applied workplace substance abuse prevention research is fraught with numerous methodological challenges. This article highlights a number of these challenges, which include (1) reaching a broad audience with prevention messages, (2) handling the concerns of the employer (3) collecting substance use data in the workplace (4) accessing and using records-based data, and (5) linking survey and records-based data. Using examples from the authors' ongoing research assessing a workplace health promotion and substance abuse prevention program funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, the authors address these challenges.
