Catalysts for otc drug communication strategies: Perceptions of information source characteristics by the elderly

The elderly are the prime users of all medication and especially self-medication using Over-the-Counter (OTC) dtugs. This group also has the greatest risk from misuse or interaction of multiple medications. To minimize the risk, information about OTC consumption must be provided to the elderly. This research reports on the importance of various information sources to light and heavy users of OTC medications among the elderly and an evaluation of those information sources with respect to perceived expertise, credibility, understandability and relevance. Communication strategies are suggested for reaching this at-risk group. © 1991 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Value of services provided by pharmaceutical companies: Perceptions of physicians and pharmaceutical sales representatives

Pharmaceutical sales representatives (PSRs) are a key component of pharmaceutical companies’ marketing strategies in that they are the link between the pharmaceutical company and the physician. PSRs provide various services in order to increase the physician’s prescribing activity of their companies’ products. Given the high cost of recruiting, training, and supporting a PSR, it is important for PSRs to understand the relative significance physicians ascribe to services provided. This study examined whether there is a gap in the perceptions of physicians and PSRs regarding the value of specific services provided by PSRs. Physicians and PSRs who attended medical meetings were surveyed. Results of the study indicated that there were significant differences in the perceived value between PSRs and physicians. Services which were perceived to be less important to physicians than to PSRs were new product detailing, old product detailing, providing product studies and research findings, PSRs serving as expert consultants, and recruiting physicians to participate in FDA approval drug studies. Services for which there were no significant differences of perceived value between the groups included free product samples and promotional luncheons and dinners. © 1999 by The Haworth Press, Inc. Older consumers’ perceptions of health care information sources: The effect on search behavior

Substantial evidence has been developed regarding the identity of health care information sources preferred by the elderly. However, this research has not empirically investigated why a given source might be more or less important to this segment. To address this gap, this research investigates OTC-health care information sources in terms of their credibility, expertise and associated risk. Differences in perceptions of these characteristics across the derived information source types are then examined across heavy and light users of OTC medications. © 1994 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

DRUG INFORMATION-SERVICES ACTIVITY, 1961-1979 - A CITATION ANALYSIS

In an attempt to determine the interrelationships of articles published regarding drug information services activity, a citation analysis was performed. The period chosen for study was 1961-1979. During this period, some 258 publications were identified as meeting the operational definition of drug information services activity. A subset of publications was selected for further study and showed that (1) less than 1/3 of the articles in the subset cited one another, (2) the "classic" article(s) are seldom cited, and (3) authors tend to cite themselves more frequently than others. A historiograph is presented which shows all of the citation interrelationships of the subset of publications.

Physicians and drug company sales representatives

The relationship, discussed in the August issue of the Journal(1,2), between physicians and drug companies is a growing ethical disgrace to the medical profession. Nearly all educational programs for physicians are now tainted by the perceived and often actual bias of speakers funded by drug companies. However, among physicians there is strong denial that we are influenced by pharmaceutical representatives. Ironically, this denial serves the drug companies well, bolstering a sense of impartiality in the face of aggressive marketing to gain physician acceptance and use of the companies□ drugs. Furthermore, this denial creates danger by making physicians much less critical than they should be of the information that they receive. Unless we search out the few journal articles that critique the drug company studies and data analyses, we do not realize the limitations of these studies until serious side effects start to appear and a drug?s use is curtailed.

Evaluation of consumer drug information databases.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate prescription drug information contained in six consumer drug information databases available on CD-ROM, and to make health care professionals aware of the information provided, so that they may appropriately recommend these databases for use by their patients. DESIGN: Observational study of six consumer drug information databases: The Corner Drug Store, Home Medical Advisor, Mayo Clinic Family Pharmacist, Medical Drug Reference, Mosby's Medical Encyclopedia, and PharmAssist. SETTING: Not applicable. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: Not applicable. INTERVENTIONS: Information on 20 frequently prescribed drugs was evaluated in each database. The databases were ranked using a point-scale system based on primary and secondary assessment criteria. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: For the primary assessment, 20 categories of information based on those included in the 1998 edition of the USP DI Volume II, Advice for the Patient: Drug Information in Lay Language were evaluated for each of the 20 drugs, and each database could earn up to 400 points (for example, 1 point was awarded if the database mentioned a drug's mechanism of action). For the secondary assessment, the inclusion of 8 additional features that could enhance the utility of the databases was evaluated (for example, 1 point was awarded if the database contained a picture of the drug), and each database could earn up to 8 points. RESULTS: The results of the primary and secondary assessments, listed in order of highest to lowest number of points earned, are as follows: Primary assessment--Mayo Clinic Family Pharmacist (379), Medical Drug Reference (251), PharmAssist (176), Home Medical Advisor (113.5), The Corner Drug Store (98), and Mosby's Medical Encyclopedia (18.5);secondary assessment--The Mayo Clinic Family Pharmacist (8), The Corner Drug Store (5), Mosby's Medical Encyclopedia (5), Home Medical Advisor (4), Medical Drug Reference (4), and PharmAssist (3).
