The parallel-plate waveguide structure partially filled with Left-handed material (LHM) is carefully investigated. It is shown that complex mode is the constituent part of complete eigen mode set in the structure independent of parameters of the configuration and operating frequency;it means that purely propagating and purely evanescent mode fields are not a complete set, unless complemented by the complex mode fields. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the propagation characteristics of present parallel plate waveguide and the role of complex mode fields in step discontinuity modeling. It is found that convergence can not be achieved in the mode matching procedure unless the complex modes are included in field expansions.
