We show how clique and cover induced inequalities implied from 0-1 knapsack constraints can be obtained as Chvatal-Gomory inequalities. LP tighter and 0-1 equivalent constraints to 0-1 knapsack constraints obtained by the 'big M' reduction procedure can also be generated as Chvatal-Gomory inequalities. We also show how some extended coefficient reduction based LP tighter and 0-1 equivalent constraints can be generated as Gomory fractional cuts.

A fuzzy AHP-outranking framework for selecting measures of river basin management plans

The selection of development measures is not merely a financial issue, but crucial parameters, such as environmental protection and socioeconomic security ought to be taken into consideration. In this research, the measures proposed by the Programmes of Measures (PoMs) through the Water Framework Directive implementation process are evaluated with the use of integrated hybrid multicriteria methods. Multicriteria outranking methods are coupled with a 0/1 linear programming in which the cost of the measures is induced as a constraint. The monocriterion scores of the applied method, in which 6 criteria and 37 alternatives are integrated, are proposed for the prioritization of the supplementary PoMs. The case study area is the River Basin District of Central Macedonia, Greece. Fuzzy analytical hierarchy processes are used to determine the weights of the criteria as crisp numbers even if fuzzy pairwise comparisons among the importance of the criteria exist. The advantages of these choices are presented in the article, and the results of the research demonstrate the usefulness of the methodology when financial constraints do not permit the implementation of the whole set of measures.

On a fix-and-relax framework for a class of project scheduling problems

We consider the following problem: Given a set of projects to be executed along a multi-year time horizon, find a sequencing and scheduling feasible solution that optimizes a merit function. A feasible solution should satisfy availability of storable and non-storable resources with budget carrier and non-carrier periods, and precedence, exclusivity and implication relationships among the projects. This is an NP-hard problem. We present several Fix-and-Relax strategies which partition the set of binary variable into clusters in order to selectively explore the branch-and-bound tree. Computational performance is favorably compared with a state-of-the-art optimization engine over a set of real-life cases.

Projection, lifting and extended formulation in integer and combinatorial optimization

This is an overview of the significance and main uses of projection, lifting and extended formulation in integer and combinatorial optimization. Its first two sections deal with those basic properties of projection that make it such an effective and useful bridge between problem formulations in different spaces, i.e. different sets of variables. They discuss topics like projection and restriction, the integrality-preserving property of projection, the dimension of projected polyhedra, conditions for facets of a polyhedron to project into facets of its projections, and so on. The next two sections describe the use of projection for comparing the strength of different formulations of the same problem, and for proving the integrality of polyhedra by using extended formulations or lifting. Section 5 deals with disjunctive programming, or optimization over unions of polyhedra, whose most important incarnation are mixed 0-1 programs and their partial relaxations. It discusses the compact representation of the convex hull of a union of polyhedra through extended formulation, the connection between the projection of the latter and the polar of the convex hull, as well as the sequential convexification of facial disjunctive programs, among them mixed 0-1 programs, with the related concept of disjunctive rank. Section 6 reviews lift-and-project cuts, the construction of cut generating linear programs, and techniques for lifting and for strengthening disjunctive cuts. Section 7 discusses the recently discovered possibility of solving the higher dimensional cut generating linear program without explicitly constructing it, by a sequence of properly chosen pivots in the simplex tableau of the linear programming relaxation. Finally, section 8 deals with different ways of combining cuts with branch and bound, and briefly discusses computational experience with lift-and-project cuts.

A modeling framework for life history-based conservation planning

Reserve site selection models can be enhanced by including habitat conditions that populations need for food, shelter, and reproduction. We present a new population protection function that determines whether minimum areas of land with desired habitat features are present within the desired spatial conditions in the protected sites. Embedding the protection function as a constraint in reserve site selection models provides a way to select sets of sites that satisfy these habitat requirements. We illustrate the mechanics and the flexibility of the protection function by embedding it in two linear-integer programming models for reserve site selection and applying the models to a case study of Myotis bat conservation on Lopez Island, United States. The models capture high-resolution, species-specific habitat requirements that are critical for Myotis persistence. The models help quantify the increasing marginal costs of protecting Myotis habitat and show that optimal site selection strategies are sensitive to the relative importance of habitat requirements. A note on "Price discount based on early order commitment in a single manufacturer-multiple retailer supply chain"

In a recent paper by Xie et al. [Xie, J., Zhou, D., Wei, J.C., Zhao, X., 2010. Price discount based on early order commitment in a single manufacturer-multiple retailer supply chain. European Journal of Operational Research 200, 368-376], the authors have studied the early order commitment (EOC) strategy for a decentralized, two-level supply chain consisting of a single manufacturer and multiple retailers. They fail to provide an algorithm to determine the optimal EOC periods to minimize the total supply chain cost. This note proposes a polynomial-time algorithm to find the optimal solutions, and provides a new set of sufficient conditions under which the wholesale price discount scheme coordinates the whole supply chain. The construction of sewerage systems, treatment plants and submarine outfalls designed for the development of coastal urban areas usually represents a long-lasting and significant investment with the aim of improving environmental conditions of the coastal sea water. The investors must have answers to the following questions before starting any activities: how environmental conditions of the coastal sea can be improved with a limited budget and what is the optimal timing of investment regarding the final concept of the infrastructure for pollution control? Providing answers to these questions is neither an easy nor simple task. Consequently, it is necessary to apply system engineering procedures and adequate optimization techniques. This paper deals with the policy of planning the pollution control infrastructure in the Kastela Bay region.

This paper provides an automatic method of splicing shredded printed paper which was shredded by shredder. A splicing degree function was defined by using bicubic spline technology. Based on the splicing degree function, a 0-1 mixed integer programming model was used to solve the shredded paper splicing problem. The whole solving process was automatic, and the result was perfect.

Uncapacitated facility location problem (UFLP) is a combinatorial optimization problem, which has many applications. The artificial fish swarm algorithm has recently emerged in continuous optimization problem. In this paper, we present a simplified binary version of the artificial fish swarm algorithm (S-bAFSA) for solving the UFLP. In S-bAFSA, trial points are created by using crossover and mutation. In order to improve the quality of the solutions, a cyclic reinitialization of the population is carried out. To enhance the accuracy of the solution, a local search is applied on a predefined number of points. The presented algorithm is tested on a set of benchmark uncapacitated facility location problems.

It is important to predict the total workload for facilitating auto scaling resource management in service cloud platforms. Currently, most prediction methods use a single prediction model to predict workloads. However, they cannot get satisfactory prediction performance due to varying workload patterns in service clouds. In this paper, we propose a novel prediction approach, which categorizes the workloads and assigns different prediction models according to the workload features. The key idea is that we convert workload classification into a 0-1 programming problem. We formulate an optimization problem to maximize prediction precision, and then present an optimization algorithm. We use real traces of typical online services to evaluate prediction method accuracy. The experimental results indicate that the optimizing workload category is effective and proposed prediction method outperforms single ones especially in terms of the platform cumulative absolute prediction error. Further, the uniformity of prediction error is also improved.
