In contrast to the body of literature devoted to l-methyl-4-phenyl-l,2,5,6-tetrahydTOpyridine (MPTP) effects in the central nervous system (CNS), there are only a few reports regarding the effects on enteric nervous system (ENS). In arecentpublication of this journal, Anderson et al. (2007) investigated the association between MPTP induced depletion of dopaminergic ENS neurons and gastrointestinal (GI) dysmotility in a mouse model of PD. This detailed study is relevant to clarify the role of dopaminergic intrinsic innervation on GI motility in an animal model. Although the MPTP model does not reflect the biochemical events related to the pathological changes in idiopathic PD, the results of this study may provide some insights into gastrointestinal dysfunction as a relevant non motor symptom in PD patients.
