Complete control of light-matter interactions at a single quantum level is critical for quantum science applications such as precision measurements and information processing. Nanophotonic devices, developed with recent advancements in nanofabrication techniques, can be used to tailor the interactions between single photons and atoms. One example of such a device is the optical nanofibre, which provides an excellent platform due to the strongly confined transverse light fields, long interaction length, low loss, and diverse optical modes. This facilitates a strong interaction between atoms and guided light, revealing chiral atom-light processes and the prospect of waveguide quantum electrodynamics. This work highlights recent advances on optical nanofiber mediated excitation of cold rubidium Rydberg atoms for the creation of a 1d Rydberg array.

Ultrasonic transducers for medical diagnostic imaging

Over the past decades, ultrasound imaging technology has made tremendous progress in obtaining important diagnostic information from patients in a rapid, noninvasive manner. Although the technology has benefited from sophisticated signal processing technology and imaging system integration, much of this progress has been derived from the development of ultrasonic transducers that are in direct contact with patients. An overview of medical ultrasonic imaging transducers is presented in this review that describes their structure, types, and application fields. The structural components of a typical transducer are presented in detail including an active layer, acoustic matching layers, a backing block, an acoustic lens, and kerfs. The types of transducers are classified according to the dimensions of ultrasound images: one-dimensional array, mechanical wobbling, and two-dimensional array transducers. Advantages of each transducer over the other and the technical issues for further performance enhancement are described. Application of the transducers to various clinical imaging fields is also reviewed.

Highly effective energy dissipation system based on one-dimensionally arrayed short single-walled carbon nanotubes

In this paper, the impact energy dissipation characteristics of one-dimensional (1d) short single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) system are investigated via molecular dynamics (Md) simulation. It is found that 1d SWNT system has good force mitigation performance and extraordinarily high specific energy absorption (SEA) upon high-speed impact in the absence of plasticity, which is 1 to 2 orders advantageous over macroscale impact protection devices and structures. Moreover, a simple model based on the theorem of momentum can give an accurate prediction of force mitigation effect. The mechanism of this non-plastic impact energy dissipation lies in the transformation of impact energy to the kinetic and potential energy of SWNT molecules. Similar to macroscopic metallic rings, SWNTs can buckle under large force, which in fact enhances force mitigation capability of the system. A continuum model is established, able to predict the critical forces of SWNTs of different radii. Finally, system performance upon impact speeds in a broader range and the influence of parameters such as system length and SWNT radius are discussed. This work may be instructive to the design of novel impact energy mitigation system at nanoscale. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

double-Striped Metallic Patterns from PS-b-P4VP Nanostrand Templates

A new nanometallic pattern, characterized by randomly disposed double or twin one-dimensional stripes and that adds to the nanotechnology toolbox, has been obtained from a unique template possessing the nanostrand morphology. This morphology had previously been shown to form in Langmuir-Blodgett films made from a polystyrene-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-P4VP) diblock copolymer blended with 3-n-pentadecylphenol (PdP). The nanostrand backbone is composed of PS, and it is bordered along both sides by a P4VP monolayer, visualized for the first time by high resolution atomic force microscopy. The exposed P4VP alongside the nanostrands serves as sites for depositing compounds attracted selectively to P4VP. Here, both gold ions (HAuCl4 center dot 3H(2)O) and gold nanoparticles (AuNP, 12 nm in diameter, stabilized with sodium citrate) were complexed to the P4VP. Plasma treatment of the gold ions led to double stripes of monolayer metallic gold. To obtain dense deposition of AuNP in double rows, it was necessary to acidify the AuNP aqueous solution (pH 5.2 here). The achievement of the metallic double-stripe patterns also confirms the composition of the nanostrand morphology, which up to now had been deduced indirectly. The double-stripe pattern has possible applications for plasmonic lasers, energy transport, and biosensors.

A photo-electron detection system with 32 PIN photodiodes in 1d array has been designed and implemented within 16cm width. There are mainly two parts in this system: the photodiode frontend with weak signal modulation and sampling, the signal processing backend with parallel signal processing and data transfer. The weak current signal of 32 PIN photodiodes' output is first amplified for about 104 times, and then sampled at 75MHz with 12bits digital precision. The weak signal modulation circuit has a good response to signal with pulse width larger than 20ns or lead edge longer than 10ns. The signal processing module receives the 32-channel signal at data-rate of 900Mbps per channel and caches them real-time inside the FPGA. The data bandwidth of the signal processing module reaches up to 28.8 Gbps. Sampled data is then transferred to host computer through a USB2.0 interface.

The development of biomatrices for technological and biomedical applications employs self-assembled scaffolds built from short peptidic motifs. However, biopolymers composed of protein domains would offer more varied molecular frames to introduce finer and more complex functionalities in bioreactive scaffolds using bottom-up approaches. Yet, the rules governing the three-dimensional organization of protein architectures in nature are complex and poorly understood. As a result, the synthetic fabrication of ordered protein association into polymers poses major challenges to bioengineering. We have now fabricated a self-assembling protein nanofiber with predictable morphologies and amenable to bottom-up customization, where features supporting function and assembly are spatially segregated. The design was inspired by the cross-linking of titin filaments by telethonin in the muscle sarcomere. The resulting fiber is a two-protein system that has nanopatterned peptide display capabilities as shown by the recruitment of functionalized gold nanoparticles at regular intervals of similar to 5 nm, yielding a semiregular linear array over micrometers. This polymer promises the uncomplicated display of biologically active motifs to selectively bind and organize matter in the fine nanoscale. Further, its conceptual design has high potential for controlled plurifunctionalization.

Single electron transfer logic gate family

Single electron transfer logic circuits, where logical bit information is represented by the existence of discrete small current pulses accompanied by single electron tunneling (SET) in a one-dimensional array of small tunnel junctions, have been investigated. The basic operation characteristics of several key circuit elements, such as an SET transmission line, a confluence circuit, a split circuit and a set-reset gate were examined and their correct functionality was verified by Monte Carlo simulation. We have shown that basic logic gates, such as NOT, ANd and OR, can be implemented using these circuit elements if we provide periodic single electron clock pulses to the gates. Robustness of these logic gates has also been investigated by calculating the de bias margin.
