Real-time 3-d image analysis via Jacobi moments

In this research, we have proposed the parallel GPU-accelerated algorithms to compute the Jacobi moments defined in a rectangular region with substantially improved computational efficiency and highly satisfied accuracy. In our algorithms, the parallel 3-d matrix multiplications are adopted to increase the computational efficiency, while the techniques of coalesced memory access, shared memory and heterogeneous computation are utilized to optimize the computing performance on a GPU platform. Our new GPU-accelerated system can provide any required moment computational accuracy without additional computing time. To verify the performance of our new parallel GPU-accelerated algorithms, we conducted a series of 2d and 3-d image analysis tests via the Jacobi moments with encouraging outcome, while the computing times for all these experimental tasks are in the level of milliseconds. It is expected that our new parallel GPU-accelerated algorithms will expedite the research in 3-d image analysis via the moment methods in the real -time range.

Cracking in a hot deformed SiC_p/A6061 composite investigated using synchrotron microtomography

We present the first investigation of cracking by hot compression of any metal matrix composite in zones deforming under tri-axial state of stress using synchrotron microtomography (SR mu CT). The task required to reduce the unfavourable manifestations of phase contrast in the reconstructed slices is simplified by developing a Fourier domain based filter for processing of reconstructed slices. As a result for the first time an accurate characterisation of the state of 3-d damage developed by compression at 500 degrees C and 1 s (-1) to strains of similar to 1 is achieved in the bulge region of a hot worked SiCp/A6061 composite. The composition of the damage is found to predominately consist of acicular shaped large to very large pores and "coalesced" micro-cracks. The quantification of the Fourier domain filtered dataset and the analysis of the spatial proximity of the different types of damage provided the mechanism of cracking in metal matrix composites near regions of tri-axial stress at high compressive strains. The propensity for cracking in bulge region of SiCp/A6061 composite is attributed to the development and growth of acicularly shaped pores facilitated by repeated particle fragmentation. It results in a damage architecture that promotes the coalescence of the closely spaced pores and micro-cracks. This mechanism rationalises the high efficiency of power dissipation observed in hot working of SiCp/A6061composite in the absence of microstructural restoration processes.

Lithium-ion battery performance is intrinsically linked to electrode microstructure. Quantitative measurement of key structural parameters of lithium-ion battery electrode microstructures will enable optimization as well as motivate systematic numerical studies for the improvement of battery performance. With the rapid development of 3-d imaging techniques, quantitative assessment of 3-d microstructures from 2-d image sections by stereological methods appears outmoded;however, in spite of the proliferation of tomographic imaging techniques, it remains significantly easier to obtain two-dimensional (2-d) data sets. In this study, stereological prediction and three-dimensional (3-d) analysis techniques for quantitative assessment of key geometric parameters for characterizing battery electrode microstructures are examined and compared. Lithium-ion battery electrodes were imaged using synchrotron-based X-ray tomographic microscopy. For each electrode sample investigated, stereological analysis was performed on reconstructed 2-d image sections generated from tomographic imaging, whereas direct 3-d analysis was performed on reconstructed image volumes. The analysis showed that geometric parameter estimation using 2-d image sections is bound to be associated with ambiguity and that volume-based 3-d characterization of nonconvex, irregular and interconnected particles can be used to more accurately quantify spatially-dependent parameters, such as tortuosity and pore-phase connectivity.

This paper proposes Cellular Logic Array Processing (CLAP) based 3-d surface detection algorithm. The performance of CLAP based surface detection algorithm (CLAP-BSd) is compared with four other algorithms: (i) Boykov and Kolmogorov Based Surface detection (BKBSd) algorithm, (ii) Push- Relabel (PR) Based Surface detection (PRBSd) algorithm and (iii) Cheng Wang Ma (CWM) algorithm (iv) Mathematical Morphology Based Surface detection (MMBSd) in terms of time complexity.

Three-dimensional chemical analysis of laser-welded NiTi-stainless steel wires using a dual-beam FIB

The biomedical industry has an increasing demand for processes to join dissimilar metals, such as laser welding of NiTi and stainless steel wires. A region of the weld close to the NiTi interface, which previously was shown to be prone to cracking, was further analyzed by energy dispersive spectrometry (EdS) extended in the third dimension using a focused ion beam. As the spatial resolution of EdS analysis is not precise enough to resolve the finest parts of the microstructure, a new segmentation method that uses in addition secondary-electron images of higher spatial resolution was developed. Applying these tools, it is shown that this region of the weld close to the NiTi interface does not comprise a homogeneous intermetallic layer, but is rather constituted by a succession of different intermetallics, the composition of which can be directly correlated with the solidification path in the ternary Fe-Ni-Ti Gibbs simplex. Real-time detection of the person's head posture is very important in field such as safe driving of automobile, man-machine interface of game and robot, and so on. Some techniques about the posture estimation of driver's head are existed, like detecting the sight line from the position of the pupil and iris of the eyes, using the positional relationship between the eyes and nose, and so on. However, there is a problem that the result of image measuring is influenced by ambient light and face makeup of the driver in these techniques. And then, it cannot estimate a wide range of face direction. In order to solve this problem, we propose a technique of estimate the head posture of the driver by three-dimensional (3-d) image analysis which is based on the infrared pattern projection technique. The technique we proposed includes two portions: one is 3-d image measurement of driver's head and the other is the head posture estimation by 3-d image analysis. As the 3-d image measurement method, in order to obtain a reliable 3-d image, we use slit pattern projection technique;in order to keep the 3-d measurement accurate of the portion near the nose, and the 3-d measurement speed, we only use three stripes to project on the face;in order to reduce the influence of external light on the people's body, we use infrared pattern projection. To estimate the head posture quickly, we face contour modeled as linear approximation, and then use the relationship between the face degree and the slope of the line to judge the face direction.

Characterization of the microstructure of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) is essential for assessing coating lifetime and for understanding the damage mechanisms leading to ceramic layer spallation. Recent progress in synchrotron-radiation computed laminography (SRCL) enables imaging of samples that are thin but extended in two dimensions. This study reports on the first results of the 3-d characterization of electron beam physical vapour deposition TBCs by SRCL. image analysis was very helpful in investigating the 3-d microstructure obtained and is also described. 3-d characterization of weathered building limestones by high resolution synchrotron X-ray microtomography

Understanding the weathering processes of building stones and more generally of their transfer properties requires detailed knowledge of the porosity characteristics. This study aims at analyzing three-dimensional images obtained by X-ray microtomography of building stones. In order to validate these new results a weathered limestone previously characterised (Rozenbaum et al., 2007) by two-dimensional image analysis was selected. The 3-d images were analysed by a set of mathematical tools that enable the description of the pore and solid phase distribution. Results show that 3-d image analysis is a powerful technique to characterise the morphological, structural and topological differences due to weathering. The paper also discusses criteria for mathematically determining whether a stone is weathered or not. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Measuring topology of low-intensity dNA methylation sites for high-throughput assessment of epigenetic drug-induced effects in cancer cells

Epigenetic anti-cancer drugs with demethylating effects have shown to alter genome organization in mammalian cell nuclei. The interest in the development of novel epigenetic drugs has increased the demand for cell-based assays to evaluate drug performance in pre-clinical studies. An imaging-based cytometrical approach that can measure demethylation effects as changes in the spatial nuclear distributions of methylated cytosine and global dNA in cancer cells is introduced in this paper. The cells were studied by immunofluorescence with a specific antibody against 5-methylcytosine (MeC), and 4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (dAPI) for delineation of methylated sites and global dNA in nuclei. In the preprocessing step the segmentation of nuclei in three-dimensional images (3-d) is followed by an automated assessment of nuclear dAPI/MeC patterns to exclude dissimilar entities. Next, low-intensity MeC (LIM) and low-intensity dNA (LId) sites of similar nuclei are localized and processed to obtain specific nuclear density profiles. These profiles sampled at half of the total nuclear volume yielded two parameters: LIM(0.5) and LId(0.5). The analysis shows that zebularine and 5-azacytidine-the two tested epigenetic drugs introduce changes in the spatial distribution of low-intensity dNA and MeC signals. LIM(0.5) and LId(0.5) were significantly different (p<0.001) in 5-azacytidine treated (n = 660) and zebularine treated (n = 496) vs. untreated (n = 649) dU145 human prostate cancer cells. In the latter case the LIM sites were predominantly found at the nuclear border, whereas treated populations showed different degrees of increase in LIMs towards the interior nuclear space, in which a large portion of heterochromatin is located. The cell-by-cell evaluation of changes in the spatial reorganization of MeC/dAPI signals revealed that zebularine is a more gentle demethylating agent than 5-azacytidine. The three-dimensional (3-d) strain map is useful to elucidate the relationships between microstructures and locally caused deformation and fracture. However, a robust tracking method, which enables error-free tracking in synchrotron radiation computed tomography (SR-CT) images with >10 000 microstructural features, is not currently available. In this study, a model sample was subjected to a tensile test and scanned by the SR-CT technique in order to develop a new tracking method. The developed tracking methods indicated a high tracking ratio and tracking success ratio of nearly 100% in a wide strain range, which included the assumed strain in a practical experiment. It was confirmed that tracking errors produce an incorrect strain distribution in 3-d strain mapping. This study verified the validity of the developed tracking method. The application of this method to high-resolution SR-CT images will make measurement and visualization of the strain distribution possible in three dimensions in bulk materials.
