This paper introduces a 3-d Ground Penetrating Radar image processing System (3dGPRIPS), which reconstructs a 3-d image from a set of subsurface images in 2-d form scanned in a sequence by ground penetration radar (GPR) device and apply various image processing operations developed in the framework of cellular logic array processing. The various 3-d image processing operations developed in the cellular logic array processing framework are: point detection, edge detection, surface detection, thinning, skeletonization and directional textures etc. In the results section performance of Cellular Logic Array processing (CLAP) based edge detection algorithm is compared against Morphological Based Edge detection algorithms.

Negation Invariant Representations of 3-d Vectors for deep Learning Models Applied to Fault Geometry Mapping in 3-d Seismic Reflection data

We can represent the orientation of a plane in 3-d by its normal vector. However, every plane has two normal vectors that are negatives of each other. We propose four novel representations of vectors in 3-d that are negation invariant and can be used by a neural network to predict orientation. Our proposed solution is the first to introduce representations that are negation invariant, continuous, and easily parallelizable on the graphics processing unit (GPU). We evaluate the representations by predicting the orientation of a plane on a toy task, and by applying them to synthetic seismic tomographic data where we predict the presence and orientation of faults for every voxel in the volume. We further make use of the orientation of the faults in a post-processing algorithm on the GPU that separates the faults into segments (i.e., instances) that do not intersect, which allows us to selectively visualize faults in 3-d. We demonstrate the utility of the representations by deploying the model on the Laminaria 3-d seismic volume as a case study. We quantitatively compare the model's prediction against human interpretations of slices through the volume as well as existing interpretations in literature. Our analysis shows good agreement (F1 score of 88%) of the model with human interpretation in the shallow levels, where the ambient noise is lower, but this agreement degrades at deeper levels (F1 score of 68%). We explore possible reasons for this degradation.

Recently, researchers have shown an increased interest in the detection of activities of daily living (AdLs) for ambient assisted living (AAL) applications. In this study, we present an algorithm that detects activities related to personal hygiene. The approach is based on the evaluation of pose information and a person's proximity to objects belonging to the typical equipment of bathrooms, such as sink, toilet and shower. In addition to this high-level reasoning, we developed a skeleton-based algorithm that recognises actions using a supervised learning model. Therefore, we analysed several feature vectors, especially with regard to the representation of joint trajectories in the frequency domain. The results gave evidence that this high-level reasoning algorithm can reliably recognise hygiene-related activities. An evaluation of the skeleton-based algorithm shows that the defined actions were successfully classified with a rate of 96.66%.

In this paper, the problem of image processing by exploiting the structural properties of Fornasini-Marchesini second (FM-II) model is presented, and introducing some fancy methods, a new state-space realization procedure for 3-d system about image processing technology, which is based on a new elementary operation approach (EOA) for N-dimensional (N-d) system realization of single-input and single-output (SISO) in FM-II local state-space model. Specifically, the N-d realization problem of image processing can be reduced by the elementary operation approach of giving a certain N-d transfer matrix, then it can generate a FM-II model realization with lower order than the existing methods and can be easily implemented by a computer program. Non-trivial example of 3-d image processing will be given to illustrate some details and as well as the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

The octahedral group is one of the finite subgroups of the rotation group in 3-d Euclidean space and a symmetry group of the cubic grid. Compression and filtering of 3-d volumes are given as application examples of its representation theory. We give an overview over the finite subgroups of the 3-d rotation group and their classification. We summarize properties of the octahedral group and basic results from its representation theory. Wide-sense stationary processes are processes with group theoretical symmetries whose principal components are closely related to the representation theory of their symmetry group. Linear filter systems are defined as projection operators and symmetry-based filter systems are generalizations of the Fourier transforms. The algorithms are implemented in Maple/Matlab functions and worksheets. In the experimental part, we use two publicly available MRI volumes. It is shown that the assumption of wide-sense stationarity is realistic and the true principal components of the correlation matrix are very well approximated by the group theoretically predicted structure. We illustrate the nature of the different types of filter systems, their invariance and transformation properties. Finally, we show how thresholding in the transform domain can be used in 3-d signal processing.

Wavefront watermarking of technical and biological samples using digital random phase modulation and phase retrieval

A technique for digital watermarking of smooth object wavefronts using digital random phase modulation and multiple-plane iterative phase retrieval is demonstrated experimentally. A complex-valued watermark is first encrypted using two random phase masks of known distributions before being superposed onto a set of host wavefront intensity patterns. Encryption scaling factor and depth of randomization of the masks are optimized such that the amplitude and phase watermarks are decrypted successfully and are not distorting the host wavefront. Given that the watermarked intensity patterns and the numerous decryption keys are available (i.e. distances between recording planes, light source wavelength, pixel size, random phase masks and their distances to the planes are all known), increasing the number of watermarked patterns used results in enhanced quality of decrypted watermarks. The main advantage of wavefront watermarking via the phase retrieval approach compared to the holographic approach is the avoidance of reference wave-induced aberration. Watermarking of wavefronts from lenses and unstained human cheek cells demonstrate the effectiveness of the technique.

This paper proposes Cellular Logic Array processing (CLAP) based 3-d surface detection algorithm. The performance of CLAP based surface detection algorithm (CLAP-BSd) is compared with four other algorithms: (i) Boykov and Kolmogorov Based Surface detection (BKBSd) algorithm, (ii) Push- Relabel (PR) Based Surface detection (PRBSd) algorithm and (iii) Cheng Wang Ma (CWM) algorithm (iv) Mathematical Morphology Based Surface detection (MMBSd) in terms of time complexity.

We propose a robust stereo matching algorithm for images captured under varying radiometric conditions, such as exposure and lighting variations, based on the cumulative distributions of gradients. The gradient operator extracts local changes in pixel values, which are less sensitive to radiometric variations than the original pixel values. Moreover, the cumulative distribution function (CdF) of gradient vectors reflects the ranks of edge strength levels, and corresponding pixels in stereo images tend to have similar ranks regardless of radiometric conditions. Therefore, we design the matching cost function based on the dissimilarity of gradient CdF values. However, since multiple pixels in an image may have the same gradient CdF value, we further constrain the correspondence matching by checking the dissimilarity of gradient orientations. Finally, to estimate an accurate disparity at each pixel, we adaptively aggregate matching costs using the color similarity and the geometric proximity of neighboring pixels. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm provides more accurate disparities than conventional algorithms, especially under varying lighting conditions.

In this paper, we propose the novel design method of directional selection for three-dimensional complex discrete wavelet transform (3d-CdWT) (hereafter, all abbreviations will be written with capital letters). Previously, the complex discrete wavelet transform has been able to extract directional edges from images using the directional selection property. This can be applied to shape and texture analysis. However the angular range of each directional edge is still unclear and the angular ranges are fixed. Thus, it is difficult to be applied to image processing. Therefore, we firstly clarify the angular range of directional edges by using frequency characteristics. Secondly, we propose a design method for the angular range of directional edges with a desirable angular range. As a result, we can clarify the angular ranges of directional edges and it is possible to obtain the directional edges with arbitrary angular range.
