This paper presents the optimization design and analysis of axial flux permanent-magnet (AFPM) machine (internal stator external rotor) used in flywheel energy storage system (FESS). The main idea of design is reduce the pressure and friction acting on the lower bearing system, thus reducing the bearing losses and, therefore, the self-discharge of the stored energy during the standby mode. due to the unconventional flux path distribution of this machine, a 3-d finite element (Maxwell 12) method was used to analyses the design, of course including its electromagnetic torque and axial force performances. The effects of the rotor permanent magnet (PM) and slots skew angles on the cogging torque and the axial force have been studied. It is found that an optimum skew angle is effective in reducing the overall cogging torque with negligible effect on the static axial force. The latter is essential as it can be utilized to minimize the axial bearing pressure in FESS application.

This paper presents the thrust characteristics analysis of linear induction motors (LIMs) using the 3-d finite element method (3-d FEM) with edge elements taking into account eddy currents. LIM's have advantages of simple structure, easy maintenance, less environmental pollution and so on. Therefore, they are widely used for high speed transport systems in clean rooms and hospitals. However, it is difficult to analyze the thrust characteristics of LIM's numerically because of the three dimensional shape. In this paper, we calculate the thrust of a LIM using the 3-d FEM. It is clarified that the validity of the 3-d FEM by comparison of the calculated and measured results.

Analysis of electromagnetic torque of induction motors with two different doubly skewed rotors

Induction machines with conventional skewed rotor have lower starting torque compared with non-skewed rotor induction motors. In order to improve the electromagnetic torque, an induction motor with two different doubly skewed rotors was proposed in this paper. The fundamental electromagnetic torque and harmonic electromagnetic torque are analyzed by the virtual displacement method. Theoretical analysis shows that both doubly skewed rotor induction motor without middle ring (dSRIMWOMR) and doubly skewed rotor induction motor with middle ring (dSRIMWMR) can efficiently reduce the harmonic torque. The reduction of harmonic torque can improve the starting torque and reduce the torque ripple. The validity of the analytical method was verified by a large number of three dimensional (3-d) finite element simulations. Results of 3-d finite element analysis (FEA) indicated that both dSRIMWOMR and dSRIMWMR can improve starting torque compared with the conventional skewed rotor induction motor. Furthermore, the optimal skew width for improving the starting torque and reducing torque ripple was ascertained according to different 3-d finite element simulations.

Volume fraction optimization for step-formed functionally graded plates considering stress and critical temperature

Step-formed Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs) flat panels are investigated for volume fraction optimization by considering stress and critical temperature. The structure is composed of numerous layers with homogeneous and different isotropic material properties from ceramic to metal. Material properties are assumed to be temperature dependent, and remain constant in each layer. Further, the properties are assumed to be varied in the thickness direction according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the ceramic and metal volume fractions for the layer. The effective material properties of the plate are obtained by applying linear rule of mixtures for the layers. The 3-d finite element model is adopted to analyze more accurately the variation of material properties and temperature field in the thickness direction. For the various FGM volume fraction distributions and geometric parameters, mechanical stress analysis and thermo-mechanical buckling analysis are performed to get the critical conditions. Based on the results, the volume fraction optimization of the flat panels is performed for stress reduction and improving thermo-mechanical buckling behavior and compared with previous results. 3-d adaptive FEA with weighted node density technique

Purpose This paper aims to propose a method to create 3-d finite element meshes automatically using the delaunay tetrahedralization with the weighted node density technique. Using this method, the adaptive finite element analysis (FEA) was carried out for the calculation of the magnetic field of an eddy current verification model to clarify the usefulness of the method. Moreover, the error evaluation function for the adaptive FEA was also discussed. design/methodology/approach The method to create the 3-d finite element meshes using the delaunay tetrahedralization is realized by the weighted node density technique, and Zienkiewicz-Zhu's error estimator is used as the error evaluation function of the adaptive FEA. Findings The magnetic flux density vectors on the node in the error evaluation function for the adaptive FEA should be calculated with the weighted average by the reciprocal of the volume of elements. Originality/value This paper describes the method to create 3-d finite element meshes and the comparison among calculation methods of the magnetic flux density vectors on the node for the error estimator.

Optimal design of an axial magnetic gear by using particle swarm optimisation method

This paper introduces a multi-objective optimal design for an axial magnetic gear (AMG). In this study, the condition for high torque density and low cogging torque was deduced while the cost of the active materials was also reduced. The number and direction of permanent magnets and their arrangement were unchanged in the optimisation process, and the considered AMG's main dimensions were optimised using the particle swarm optimisation method. The optimised AMG was compared with the latest and similar structures with a relatively high torque density. To extract the produced torque density and cogging torque, three-dimensional (3d) finite element analyses were conducted. The results showed that while torque density increased and cogging torque decreased, the total volume and magnetic materials used decreased significantly.

This paper presents the magnetic equivalent circuit analysis of a double-excited, two-degree-of-freedom (dOF) motor. The double-excited, 2-dOF motor is a laminated structure, making it easy to manufacture and giving it simple operating principles. We explain the structure of the 2-dOF motor and analyze the static characteristics using a magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) to reduce analysis time. The feasibility of MEC analysis was confirmed by experimental results of the tilting, panning motion. We also confirmed the occurrence of holding torque in every motion.

Nonlinear bending response of functionally graded plates under thermal loads

Nonlinear bending analysis of functionally graded plates subjected to uniform pressure and thermal loads is investigated using a 3-d finite element method. Material properties are varied continuously in the thickness direction according to a simple power law distribution. A three-dimensional solid element is used for more accurate modeling of material properties and temperature field in the thickness direction. The Green-Lagrange nonlinear strain-displacement relation is used to account for large deflection due to uniform pressure and thermal loads and the incremental formulation is applied for nonlinear analysis. The thermal loads are assumed as uniform, linear and sinusoidal temperature rises across the thickness direction. In numerical studies, the nonlinear bending responses of Al2O3-Ni FGM plates due to temperature field, volume fraction distribution, and system geometric parameters are presented, in detail.

Electromagnetic inspection method of carburization depth inside and outside of heating furnace steel tube

The crude oil which flows inside the steel tube of a heating furnace of an oil-refining plant is gasified by being heated with the burner from the surface outside the steel tube. Since this steel tube is used in Japan for 30 years or more, both the inner side and outer side of the steel tube is carburized. If the carburization depth is increased, the steel tube will be exploded suddenly and a big accident may occur. In this paper, the electromagnetic inspection method for measuring the carburized depth of both the inner side and the outer side of the steel tube is proposed. The both depth is obtained by evaluating the flux density in layers with and without carburization in the steel tube using the 3-d nonlinear FEM. It is shown that the inspection for the both depth is possible by using the differential electromagnetic characteristics of the layers with and without carburization in the steel tube.

Mechanical responses of maxillary canine and surrounding tissues under orthodontic loading: a non-linear three-dimensional finite element analysis

This research investigates the biomechanical responses of the tooth structure resulted from the orthodontic operation. In this study, the stress distribution in the alveolar bone and periodontal ligament (PdL) was assumed to cause bone resorption. A 3-d finite element (FE) model of the tooth, PdL and alveolar bone of the maxillary canine was built based on the computed tomography (CT) images. The mechanical properties of the PdL were assumed to be non-linear viscoelastic. The model was analyzed by applying tipping force which caused stress distribution with different patterns in the alveolar bone and PdL. The stress concentration was mostly on the lingual and labial-cervical sections of both the PdL and alveolar bone. According to the rotational movement, the compressive stress was observed in the lingual-cervical sides of the apex and the labial-middle. The tensile stress was detected in the labial-cervical sides of the lingual-middle of the PdL. The levels and peaks of the stress distribution declined as the area of force application on the tooth got closer to the apex. To obtain more information about the tooth movement during orthodontic operation, further study with experimental results about the effects of various parameters is required.
