This paper outlines a new framework for applying Structure-from-Motion (SfM) to challenging, feature poor environments such as those observed during AGR fuel channel inspection. deriving structural information from Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor (AGR) inspection footage is challenging due to several key issues: lack of discriminative salient features within the channel, inconsistency in lighting during the inspection process, lack of textural information within the channel and noise from the inspection equipment. This presents difficulties to techniques such as SfM due to its reliance on finding and reliably tracking a set of robust features from multiple viewpoints. This paper introduces the first use of an incremental 3-d reconstruction framework which can produce reconstructions of footage obtained within a nuclear reactor. It approaches this issue by introducing a novel correspondence searching methodology which can operate within feature-poor environments by utilising a constrained, iterative threshold matching technique to obtain robust feature matches. This paper demonstrates the approach using two datasets: laboratory footage obtained from an experimental setup emulating a small sub-section of the channel and in-core inspection footage of AGR fuel channels.

3-d visualization and animation technologies in anatomical imaging

This paper explores a 3-d computer artist's approach to the creation of three-dimensional computer-generated imagery (CGI) derived from clinical scan data. Interpretation of scientific imagery, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), is restricted to the eye of the trained medical practitioner in a clinical or scientific context. In the research work described here, MRI data are visualized and interpreted by a 3-d computer artist using the tools of the digital animator to navigate image complexity and widen interaction. In this process, the artefact moves across disciplines;it is no longer tethered to its diagnostic origins. It becomes an object that has visual attributes such as light, texture and composition, and a visual aesthetic of its own. The introduction of these visual attributes provides a platform for improved accessibility by a lay audience. The paper argues that this more artisan approach to clinical data visualization has a potential real-world application as a communicative tool for clinicians and patients during consultation.

Visualizable objects in biology and medicine extend across a vast range of scale, from individual molecules and cells through the varieties of tissue and interstitial interfaces to complete organs, organ systems, and body parts. These objects include functional attributes of these systems, such as biophysical, biomechanical, and physiological properties. visualization in three dimensions of such objects and their functions is now possible with the advent of high-resolution tomographic scanners and imaging systems. Medical applications include accurate anatomy and function mapping, enhanced diagnosis, accurate treatment planning and rehearsal, and education/training. Biologic applications include study and analysis of structure-to-function relationships in individual cells and organelles. The potential for revolutionary innovation in the practice of medicine and in biologic investigations lies in direct, fully immersive, real-time multisensory fusion of real and virtual information data streams into online, real-time visualizations available during actual clinical procedures or biological experiments. Current high-performance computing, advanced image processing, and high-fidelity rendering capabilities have facilitated major progress toward realization of these goals. With these advances in hand, there are several important applications of three-dimensional visualization that will have a significant impact on the practice of medicine and on biological research.

Our work is related to the ecological state of Lake Ohrid. Tectonic by origin, Lake Ohrid is situated in the southwestern part of the Republic of Macedonia. The size of the lake is 358 squared kilometres. Its average depth is 151m and the maximum depth is 289m. "Man-made" eutrophication, in the absence of control measures, proceeds much faster than the natural phenomenon and it is the major reason for pollution of this lake. A dynamic Integrated Monitoring System (dIMS) was previously presented in another paper. Monitoring system is based on on-line measurements. One of the main objectives of dIMS is to provide a real-time monitoring and efficient protection of the environment. In this paper, a 3-d based analysis of the data from dIMS is given. The main objective of the paper is to show how the critical pollution sources in the Lake Ohrid can be presented and analysed by using visualization methods. ESRI 3-d software (ARC/INFO, ArcView Spatial Analyst & Arc View 3d Analyst) for virtual modelling and visualization was used in our work.

during interactive image-guided surgery (IIGS), a surgeon uses data from medical images to help guide the surgical procedure. At Vanderbilt University, an IIGS software system called Orion has been developed which is capable of displaying up to four 512 x 512 images and the current surgical position using an active optical tracking system, Orion is capable of displaying data from any tomographic image volume and from any NTSC video image. An additional display module has been implemented to display three-dimensional information as well as the tomographic slices, This provides the surgeon with valuable anatomical information that is not readily obtained from the tomographic slices alone. Before the surgery, a set of rendered images is created, each with a different angular view of the tomographic volume in order to surround the site of surgical interest. The major objectives of the display module are to display the appropriate rendered image from the set, identify the current probe position on the selected image, and provide an indication of distance between the probe and the physical point of the anatomy indicated on the image, This can provide the surgeon with vital information such as distance to blood vessels, tumors, or other critical structures.

Multicamera Collaboration for 3-d visualization via Correlated Information Maximization

A critical component for various interactive visual Internet of Things (IoT) applications is to reconstruct 3-d scenes from RGB images, i.e., 3-d visualization. When multiple cameras are involved, the visualization outcome mainly depends on the quality of input images, which carry correlated and complementary visual information from different camera perspectives. One main challenge to improve visualization performance is how to efficiently coordinate multiple cameras under complex environmental conditions. To overcome this challenge, we propose a situation-aware multicamera collaboration scheme based on the maximization of correlated information among different inputs. First, the information gain of a single camera is modeled by quantifying the effect of view direction, resolution and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) on image quality. A spherical Gaussian is then designed to model the mutual information among neighboring viewpoints and further calculate the total correlated information of the camera group by considering their information redundancy and complementarity. An adaptive coarse-to-fine algorithm is proposed to maximize the correlated information, which achieves effective decision making of optimal multicamera collaboration strategy, including cameras' location, direction, and focal length configurations. Simulation and realistic experiments demonstrate the accuracy of the correlated information model and the efficacy of the scheme to improve reconstruction quality.

Surface crack on teeth is a manifestation of structural damage, severely impacting individuals' health and quality of life. Inspired by the achievement of 3-d computer vision technology in surface defect detection, a method is proposed for crack detection based on line structured light and digital image correlation, aiming at achieving 3-d detection and visualization of cracks on the surface of teeth. This approach discerns cracks by scrutinizing high-strain zones in the point cloud data, derived from the tooth surface through line structured light. To obtain good visualization results, this method refines the detected cracks in the principal strain field and extracts the 3-d skeleton of the cracks. The similarity between the crack shapes extracted by this method and those observed via microscope is over 98%. Experimental results demonstrate that this method provides an accurate and visually effective solution for 3-d detection of cracks on tooth surface. The proposed method offers a viable solution for surface crack detection in other engineering structures.

Current high-performance computers and advanced image processing capabilities have made the application of three dimensional visualization objects in, biomedical computer tomographic (CT) images facilitate the researches on biomedical engineering greatly. Trying to cooperate with the update technology using Internet, where 3-d data are typically stored and processed on powerful servers accessible by using TCP/IP, we should hold the results of the isosurface be applied in medical visualization generally. Furthermore, this project is a future part of PACS system our lab working on. So in this system we use the 3-d file format VRML2.0, which is used through the Web interface for manipulating 3-d models. In this program we implemented to generate and modify triangular isosurface meshes by marching cubes algorithm. Then we used OpenGL and WC techniques to render the isosurface and manipulating voxel data. This software is more adequate visualization of volumetric data. The drawbacks are that 3-d image processing on personal computers is rather slow and the set of tools for 3-d visualization is limited. However, these limitations have not affected the applicability of this platform for all the tasks needed in elementary experiments in laboratory or data preprocessed.

This paper presents a 3-d visualization tool that manipulates and/or enhances by user input the segmented targets and other organs. A 3-d visualization tool is developed to create a precise and realistic 3-d model from CT/MR data set for manipulation in 3-d and permitting physician or planner to look through, around, and inside the various structures. The 3-d visualization tool is designed to assist and to evaluate the segmentation process. It can control the transparency of each 3-d object. It displays in one view a 2-d slice (axial, coronal, and/or sagittal) within a 3-d model of the segmented tumor or structures. This helps the radiotherapist or the operator to evaluate the adequacy of the generated target compared to the original 2-d slices. The graphical interface enables the operator to easily select a specific 2-d slice of the 3-d volume data set. The operator is enabled to manually override and adjust the automated segmentation results. After correction, the operator can see the 3-d model again and go back and forth till satisfactory segmentation is obtained. The novelty of this research work is in using state-of-the-art of image processing and 3-d visualization techniques to facilitate a process of a medical volume segmentation validation and assure the accuracy of the volume measurement of the structure of interest.

LoS Coverage Analysis for UAV-Based THz Communication Networks: Toward 3-d visualization of Wireless Networks

Terahertz (THz) links require a line-of-sight (LoS) connection, which is hard to be obtained in most scenarios. For THz communications, analyses based on LoS probability are not accurate, and a real LoS model should be considered to determine the LoS status of the link in a real 3-d environment. Considering unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based THz networks, LoS coverage is analyzed in this work, where nodes are accurately determined to be in LoS or not. Specifically, by modeling an environment with 3-d blocks, our target is to locate a set of UAVs equipped with directional THz links to provide LoS connectivity for the distributed users among the 3-d obstacles. To this end, we first characterize and model the environment with 3-d blocks. Then, we propose a user-friendly algorithm based on 3-d spatial vectors, which determines the LoS status of nodes in the target area. In addition, using 3-d modeling, several metaheuristic algorithms are proposed for UAVs' positioning under 3-d blocks in order to maximize the LoS coverage percentage. In the second part of this article, for a UAV-based THz communication network, a geometrical-analysis-based algorithm is proposed, which jointly clusters the distributed nodes and locates the set of UAVs to maximize average network capacity while ensuring the LoS state of distributed nodes among 3-d obstacles. Moreover, we also propose a suboptimal hybrid k-means-geometrical-based algorithm with a low computational complexity that can be used for networks where the topology continuously changes, and thus, users' clustering and UAVs' positioning need to be regularly updated. Finally, by providing various 3-d simulations, we evaluate the effect of various system parameters, such as the number and heights of UAVs, as well as the density and height of 3-d obstacles on the LoS coverage.
