We present the results of a point-cloud-based survey deriving from the use of image-based techniques, in particular with multi-image monoscopic digital photogrammetry systems and software, the so-called "structure-from-motion" technique. The aim is to evaluate the advantages and limitations of such procedures in architectural surveying, particularly in conditions that are "at the limit". A particular case study was chosen: the courtyard of Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo in Ascoli Piceno, Italy, which can be considered the ideal example due to its notable vertical, rather than horizontal, layout. In this context, by comparing and evaluating the different results, we present experimentation regarding this single case study with the aim of identifying the best workflow to realise a complex, articulated set of representations-using 3d modelling and 2d processing-necessary to correctly document the particular characteristics of such an architectural object.

The paper presents the results of research carried out by an interdisciplinary team at the SAd in Ascoli Piceno in collaboration with MiBACT to verify the seismic safety of national museums. The object of study was the Rocca Roveresca Fortress complex in Senigallia (Marche, Italy), a unique example of a small 14th-century fortress shaped by a series of successive modifications. It currently houses a national museum. An integrated survey based on the acquisition of 3d laser-scanner data and endoscopic investigation was necessary to outline the traces of the stratifications and therefore to obtain different high-and low-poly 3d models useful for different purposes. The main objective was to propose an ideal workflow in developing 3d models that are useful for finite element method (FEM) analysis to detect hidden vulnerabilities in the fortress by evaluating the behaviour of several substructures in the walls.

It is known that laser scanners can provide accurate, dense and raw 3d data of large scenarios but, in order to obtain a representative 3d model of the scene, such information needs to be hardly processed. This research field, named automatic construction of building models, is a challenging topic which is has been progressing over the last five years. This paper presents an overview that covers all of our research in this field. Our method follows a sequential 3d data processing strategy composed by multiple algorithms which aim to obtain a 3d basic model on furnished interiors. The approach computes a Boundary Representation Model (B-Rep) of the scene and, with the help of Radio Frequency Identification (RFId) technologies, is able to recognize and precisely place pieces of furniture into the B-Rep model, thus generating a simplified accurate semantic 3d model of the inhabited interior. Extended experimentation of the method has been carried out in real scenarios with laser scanner data yielding encouraging results.

The development of a European market for digital cultural heritage assets is impeded by the lack of a suitable digital marketplace, i.e., a commonly accepted exchange platform for digital assets. We have developed the technology for such a platform over the last two years: The 3d-COFORM Repository Infrastructure (RI) is a secure content management infrastructure for the distributed processing of large-volume datasets. Three of the key features of this system are (1) owners have complete control over their data, (2) binary data must have attached metadata, and (3) processing histories are documented. Our system can support the complete production pipeline for digital assets from data acquisition (photo, 3d scan) over processing (cleaning, hole filling) to interactive presentation and content delivery over the internet. In this paper we present the components of the system and their interplay. One particular focus of the software development was to make it as easy as possible to connect client-side applications to the RI. Therefore we present the RI-API in some detail and present several RI-enabled client-side applications that use it.

This paper is focused on the automatic construction of 3d basic-semantic models of inhabited interiors using laser scanners with the help of RFId technologies. This is an innovative approach, in whose field scarce publications exist. The general strategy consists of carrying out a selective and sequential segmentation from the cloud of points by means of different algorithms which depend on the information that the RFId tags provide. The identification of basic elements of the scene, such as walls, floor, ceiling, windows, doors, tables, chairs and cabinets, and the positioning of their corresponding models can then be calculated. The fusion of both technologies thus allows a simplified 3d semantic indoor model to be obtained. This method has been tested in real scenes under difficult clutter and occlusion conditions, and has yielded promising results.

Automatic Method for Building Indoor Boundary Models from dense Point Clouds Collected by Laser Scanners

In this paper we present a method that automatically yields Boundary Representation Models (B-rep) for indoors after processing dense point clouds collected by laser scanners from key locations through an existing facility. Our objective is particularly focused on providing single models which contain the shape, location and relationship of primitive structural elements of inhabited scenarios such as walls, ceilings and floors. We propose a discretization of the space in order to accurately segment the 3d data and generate complete B-rep models of indoors in which faces, edges and vertices are coherently connected. The approach has been tested in real scenarios with data coming from laser scanners yielding promising results. We have deeply evaluated the results by analyzing how reliably these elements can be detected and how accurately they are modeled.

Automatic execution of workflows on laser-scanned data for extracting bridge surveying goals

With the capability of capturing detailed geometry of bridges in minutes, laser scanning technology has attracted the interests of bridge inspectors and researchers in the domain of bridge management. A challenge of effectively utilizing laser scanned point clouds for bridge inspection is that inspectors need to manually extract and measure large numbers of geometric features (e.g., points) for deriving geometric information items (e.g., the minimum underclearance) of bridges, named as bridge surveying goals in this research. Tedious manual data processing impedes inspectors from quantitatively understanding how various data processing options (e.g., algorithms, parameter values) influence the data processing time and the reliabilities of the surveying goal results. This paper shows the needs of automatic workflow executions for extracting surveying goals from laser scanned point clouds, and presents a computational framework for addressing these needs. This computational framework is composed of formal representations of workflows and mechanisms for constructing and executing workflows. Using a prototype system implemented based on this framework, we constructed and quantitatively characterized three workflows for extracting three representative bridge surveying goals, using three metrics of workflow performance defined in this research: exhaustiveness of measurement sampling, reliability of surveying goal results, and time efficiency. Formalization of workflows for extracting bridge surveying goals from laser-scanned data

Laser scanners enable bridge inspectors to collect dense 3d point clouds, which capture detailed geometries of bridges. While these data sets contain rich geometric information, they bring unique challenges related to geometric information retrieval. This paper describes a case study to show the necessity and potential value of automating the manual data processing workflows being executed for extracting geometric data items (surveying goals) from 3d point clouds, and presents an approach for formalizing these workflows to enable such automation. We analyzed manual procedures of taking measurements on 3d point clouds and as-built models for obtaining bridge inspection related surveying goals, synthesized and categorized all data processing operations into nine generic operations. These nine categories of operations can be formalized using tuples. Using these tuples, we formalized an operation library and workflow construction mechanisms for enabling inspectors to semi-automatically construct executable workflows. This formalism also incorporates several mechanisms for facilitating extensions to the existing operation library to accommodate additional surveying goals that have not been covered. The developed approach is validated for its generality to support workflows needed for all surveying goals required by the National Bridge Inventory (NBI) program, and for its extensibility to support workflows needed to support a variety of other surveying goals identified in the Architecture/Engineering/Construction domain. Motion-based control of video games has gained significant attention from both academic and industrial research groups for the unique interactive experiences it offers. Of particular research interest has been the control of games through gesture-based interfaces enabled by 3d cameras that have recently been made affordable. However, existing research has yet to combine the benefits of a 3d camera with those of a physical game controller in a way that uses accurate gesture and controller tracking to provide six degrees of freedom and one-to-one correspondence between the real-world 3d space and the virtual environment. This paper presents a natural man-achine interaction method whereby a user is able to control a virtual space by using one hand to perform gestures and the other hand to wield a physical controller. The data returned from a custom 3d depth camera is used to obtain not only hand gestures (number of fingers and their angles), but also the absolute position of the physical controller. This 3d data is then combined with the orientation data returned by the accelerometers and gyroscopes within the physical controller. The controller data is fused in real-time into a composite transformation matrix that is applied to a 3d object. Two game prototypes are presented that combine hand gestures and a physical controller to create an entirely new level of interactive gaming.

In this paper we propose a method for characterizing the surface of fractured pieces which come from old and complete original objects. Natural fractured pieces are difficult to segment due to the fact that the faces and edges are not well defined. For this reason, standard local feature based approaches are clearly inefficient to make an efficient segmentation. Our segmentation procedure is based on the Cone Curvature (CC) concept applied over the original dense models which provide standard scanner modeling tools. This CC based-method allows us to explore the surface from multiple neighborhood levels and to find a compact segmentation solution which characterizes different parts of the piece. A wide experimentation has been carried out on a set of old fractured pieces belonging to the remains of roman sculptures.
