Looking towards the future of education in the 21st century, the importance of a strong STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) curriculum is unquestioned, with current EU projects discussing the common challenges adapting innovative teaching andlearning methods and inspiring future generations of scientists. Recent predictions on Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies have suggested potential growth estimates of up to $182 billion in revenue by 2025, including hardware, software and content, which would exceed television revenue. VR and AR have the potential to become a standard tool in education and could revolutionise the teaching andlearning (T&L) process via interaction with learningobjects in 3d environments. This paper discusses the main concepts of learningobjects with focus on the 3d element of knowledge components within emerging VR/AR educational ecosystems that need to be constructed, implemented and evaluated in order to create a teaching andlearning environment that engages the senses in unique and innovative ways.

3-9% school-aged children in Ireland are estimated to be affected by AdHd (Attention deficit Hyperactivity disorder), according to HSE (Health Service Executive). Typical comorbid conditions include: anxiety disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, depression, sleep problems, epilepsy, learningdifficulties, etc. As such, unless early intervention properly takes place, performance of children with AdHd at school tends to be compromised (e.g. leaving school early and substance abuse etc.). The current work presents a preliminary investigation of creating 3d learning objects (3dLO) using Augmented Reality (AR), following the IEEE learningobjects standards, to enhance an established online literacy programme, WordsWorthlearning (WWL). The methodology and experimentation of creating AR 3dLO is proposed, followed by a pilot evaluation, aiming to provide a foundation of a system that can support interactive educational content, service, assessment, and feedback for children with AdHd and their parents and teachers.

Educational technology plays an important role in the life of a medical student. The potential for virtual reality (VR) to enhance medical education has been discernible for more than 40 years;however, it has not been available due to the associated high costs [1]. With the advancement and affordability of three-dimensional (3d) technology, the introduction of virtual and augmented reality has the potential to change the way in which medical students learn today. Currently, teaching tools consist of a multitude of materials, from traditional resources such as books to more modern web-based videos, which provide students with extra study material in an effort to promote self-directedlearning [2]. 3d learning objects have the potential to provide an alternative immersive learning tool for medical students to comprehend complex structures found within the medical education curricula [3], [4]. Furthermore, we can take this one step further by introducing 3d learning objects into virtual reality learning environments (VRLE's) [5]. VRLE's can assist in self-directedlearning by providing an enhancedlearning and understanding of invisible concepts, such as those found within the obstetrics and gynaecology curriculum. This study is based on the aforementioned concepts, which are used to develop an immersive 3dlearning tool. This work-in-progress paper focuses on outlining the workflow process of the development of VR Baby, in which 3d learning objects are created for implementation into a VRLE, for future use within the medical education setting.
