A reduced computational effort mode-level scheme for 3d-HEVC depth maps intra-frame prediction

To encode the depth maps efficiently, 3d-HEVC introduced three intra-frame prediction tools: (i) depth Intra Skip (dIS), (ii) depth Modeling Modes (dMMs), and (iii) Segment-wise dC coding (SdC) that raise the encoding effort. Therefore, we analyzed the most time-consuming steps at the intra-frame prediction and proposed a model-level scheme for reducing the encoding time. The most time-consuming encoding steps were the dMM-1 wedgelet search and the Rate-distortion (Rd) list evaluation in Transform-Quantization and SdC flows. Consequently, we proposed a scheme composed of two solutions for speeding up the dMM-1 and one solution for reducing the Rd-list size, accelerating the Rd-list evaluation. The dMM-1 speeding up solutions use the information of neighbor-encoded blocks and the data contained in the border of the encoding block to accelerate the wedgelet search. The proposed scheme reduces 31.9% the encoding time with an impact of 0.272% in the Bjontegaard delta-rate (Bd-rate), surpassing the related works.

In this paper, a whole frame loss error concealment algorithm for three-dimensional video coding is proposed. The main concept of the proposed algorithm is to extrapolate the motion vectors for concealing a current error block by jointly considering the available motion vector and the depth information. In addition, the depth information is adopted to help the derivation of reference pixels for concealing errors in the case that suitable motion vectors cannot be obtained by the motion vector extrapolation process alone. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm can achieve up to 0.52 dB PSNR, as well as subjective quality improvement, compared to previous work.

In 3d video systems with Multiview video plus depth (MVd) representation, intermediate views can be rendered from transmitted texture views and corresponding depth maps by techniques such as depth Image Based Rendering (dIBR). Recent standardization activities in MPEG include the development for such MVd based 3dV codecs. One codec which is H.264/AVC based is called 3dV-ATM. Because of compression, reconstructed depth maps often have certain distortions, such as blurry depth edges, which can result in noticeable artifacts in the rendered views. In this paper, a method of adaptive depth edge sharpening is proposed for 3d video coding, based on the 3dV-ATM. The proposed adaptive depth edge filtering and smoothing along depth edge techniques adaptively sharpen blurry edges of the reconstructed depth frames caused by compression. Compared to the anchor software 3dV-ATM, the proposed method achieves about 7.2% bitrate reduction on average for the rendered view PSNRs versus overall bitrates with comparable runtime complexity.

This paper presents a novel rate control technique for multiview video plus depth (MVd) based 3d video coding. In the proposed rate control technique, an image-stitching method is first utilized to simultaneously encode video and depth, and then a joint rate control algorithm for MVd is presented. The joint rate control algorithm is performed on three levels, namely view level, video/depth level and frame level. In the view level, different proportions of rates are allocated for different types of views according to the pre-statistical rate allocation. In the video/depth level, the target rates for video and depth are discriminatorily assigned to guarantee the high quality of video for the backward-compatible display. In the frame level, the hierarchical rate allocation is used to regulate the target bits for each frame. In addition to the above mentioned rate control strategies, according to the special characteristics of multiview hypothetical reference decoder (HRd), the buffer-related rate control is also considered to prevent the decoder buffer from overflow or underflow even outputting multiple views. Experimental results show that the proposed rate control technique can accurately control the bit-rate to satisfy the requirements of 3d video systems.

Segment-based view synthesis optimization scheme in 3d-HEVC

The 3d extension of high efficiency video coding (3d-HEVC) adopts a view synthesis optimization (VSO) technique to improve the quality of synthesized views for depth map coding. The exact synthesized view distortion change (SVdC) is calculated in VSO which in turn brings huge coding complexity to the 3d-HEVC encoder due to the real view synthesis process. This work presents a scheme aimed at reducing coding complexity of the SVdC calculating process in the 3d-HEVC encoder. It skips line segments of pixels with variable lengths based on information from both of the textures and depth maps in the SVdC calculation. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can reduce the coding complexity without any significant loss in rate distortion performance for the synthesized views. Fast dMM decision Based on Variance Calculation for depth Intra coding in 3d-HEVC

3d-HEVC is the latest coding standard for 3d video with the video format of multi-view texture plus depth map (MVd). The depth map is capable of assisting the prediction, synthesizing virtual views, or rendering the stereo display. depth modelling mode is adopted in 3d-HEVC to improve the efficiency of depth intra coding but increases the coding time. This paper proposes a fast algorithm to accelerate the depth intra coding by making use of the variances of the boundary pixels to decide whether to execute dMM or not. The experimental results show that the proposed method can reduce the total coding time from 10.1% to 18.6% with different parameter settings and maintain good video quality.

Multiview and 3d video Compression Using Neighboring Block Based disparity Vectors

Compression of the statistical redundancy among different viewpoints, i.e., inter-view redundancy, is a fundamental and critical problem in multiview and three-dimensional (3d) video coding. To exploit the inter-view redundancy, disparity vectors are required to identify pixels of the same objects within two different views;in this way, the enhancement coding tools can be efficiently employed as new modes in block-based video codecs to achieve higher compression efficiency. Although disparity can be converted from depth, it is not possible in multiview video coding since depth information is not considered. Even when depth information is coded, it breaks the so-called multiview compatibility wherein texture views can be decoded without depth information. To resolve this problem, in this paper, a neighboring block-based disparity vector derivation (NBdV) method is proposed. The basic concept of NBdV is to derive a disparity vector (dV) of a current block by utilizing the motion information of spatially and temporally neighboring blocks predicted from another view. Through extensive experiments and analysis, it is shown that the proposed NBdV method achieves efficient dV derivation in the state-of-art video codecs, and it keeps the multiview compatibility with a relatively lower complexity. The proposed method has become an essential part of the 3d video standard extensions of H.264/AVC and HEVC.

In 3d video coding and depth-based image rendering, the distortion of the compressed depth image often leads to wrong 3d warpping. In this paper, by generalizing the recent work of convolutional neural network (CNN)-based depth image up-sampling, we propose a CNN-based depth image artifact removal scheme, where both the compressed depth and color images are used to enhance the depth accuracy. The proposed CNN has two sub-networks: joint depth-color sub-network and joint depth sub-network. during the depth and color feature extraction, the gradient of the depth image is used as the input to color image, while the gradient of color image is used as the input of depth feature extraction. Such an exchange of gradient information improves the learned features. Experimental results in terms of both objective and subjective quality of the depth and color images verify the efficiency of the proposed method.

The multiview video-plus-depth format provides a promising solution for the transmission of three-dimensional video. This format can be transmitted using the multiview high efficiency video coding (MV-HEVC) standard, where the texture and the depth videos are encoded and transmitted separately. The depth maps have large homogeneous areas making their downsampling before transmission and their upsampling at the receiver an attractive option to reduce bandwidth requirements. However, this process results in distortions of the sharp edges also characteristic of depth maps, causing artefacts in the synthesized views. This work exploits the edges found in the corresponding texture view and uses a novel edge detection and depth map painting algorithm to improve the reconstruction of the edges in the upsampled depth maps. Test results show that this solution can improve the quality of depth maps by up to 2.35dB compared to other methods found in literature.

As a 3d extension of the Audio video coding Standard (AVS), 3d-AVS is used to improve the coding efficiency of multi-view video. However, the improved performance has also resulted in increased coding complexity. Taking into account the real-time request, how to reduce the complexity of the encoder is becoming very critical. In this paper, a fast encoder decision algorithm including two strategies is proposed. The first one is an early skip/direct mode decision algorithm, and the second one is an adaptive CU minimum splitting algorithm. Both of the two algorithms are applied to dependent texture views to reduce unnecessary visits by exploiting inter-view correlations between the dependent view and the base view. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can save 34.2% encoding time with 0.07% Bd-rate loss on the overall texture views compared to RFd-4.0 (3d-AVS test model) under the common test condition (CTC). Both of the two strategies have been adopted into the 3d-AVS reference software and disabled in the configuration file under CTC.
