An overview of existing and upcoming 3d video coding standards is given. Various different 3d video formats are available, each with individual pros and cons. The 3d video formats can be separated into two classes: video-only formats (such as stereo and multiview video) and depth-enhanced formats (such as video plus depth and multiview video plus depth). Since all these formats exist of at least two video sequences and possibly additional depth data, efficient compression is essential for the success of 3d video applications and technologies. For the video-only formats the H.264 family of coding standards already provides efficient and widely established compression algorithms: H.264/AVC simulcast, H.264/AVC stereo SEI message, and H.264/MVC. For the depth-enhanced formats standardized coding algorithms are currently being developed. New and specially adapted coding approaches are necessary, as the depth or disparity information included in these formats has significantly different characteristics than video and is not displayed directly, but used for rendering. Motivated by evolving market needs, MPEG has started an activity to develop a generic 3d video standard within the 3dVC ad-hoc group. Key features of the standard are efficient and flexible compression of depth-enhanced 3d video representations and decoupling of content creation and display requirements.

Nowadays, there are many kinds of technologies to provide multimedia TV content in different formats and picture quality. Three-dimensional (3d) video is one of the next generation TV services with specific features from the video image quality point of view. Naturally, efficient compression tools enabling significant bit rate reduction to ease 3d video distribution are an integral part of any practical 3d video system implementation. In this paper, we present a study of recent and upcoming compression tools for stereoscopic videos. We consider H.264 Advanced video coding (AVC), H.264 Annex H - Multiview video coding (MVC), H.265 High Efficiency video coding (HEVC) and H.265 Annex G - Multiview High Efficiency video coding (MV-HEVC) video coding formats to process stereoscopic videos with different properties. To compare the performance of considered compression tools, we provide an analysis of the encoded/decoded stereoscopic video quality using objective metrics.

In this paper, we propose an improved Largest coding Unit (LCU) level rate control algorithm for the 3d video coding extension of the high efficiency video coding (3d-HEVC). In the proposed algorithm, bit allocation for extended views is investigated in combination with temporal and inter-view Mean Absolute difference (MAd) predictions. Upon prediction weights generated by MAd prediction errors, accurate bitrate for LCU can be obtained. Then, a weight-based R-lambda, model is designed based on the prediction weights by improving the model parameters consistent with video content. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve better rate distortion performance and bitrate accuracy in comparison with the R4, model based rate control benchmark algorithm in HTM.

In the 3d extension of Audio video coding Standard (AVS), i.e. 3d-AVS, the Global disparity Vector (GdV) derivation technique has been proposed to provide an estimation for disparity Vector (dV) in inter-view prediction, where the GdV is generated by averaging all disparity Vectors (dVs) in the latest previously coded frame. The prediction accuracy of GdV may be however limited by the lack of local adaptivity. In this paper, we introduce a novel Local disparity Vector (LdV) derivation scheme. Specifically, the dV of the current block is calculated from the dVs within a neighboring region, whose size can be adaptively expanded to increase the robustness and accuracy. Experimental results show that the proposed LdV derivation method can provide around 2.12% and 1.37% bitrate reductions for compressed views and synthesized views compared with the GdV scheme, respectively.

As the state-of-the-art video coding standard, High Efficiency video coding (HEVC) has been finalized in January 2013. To support the coding of multiple views and associated depth data, the development of the HEVC extension for 3d video coding is also about to be finalized. New coding unit (CU) level coding tools are added to the HEVC design to improve the compression capabilities for both video views and depth data. In this paper, we introduce a new coding mode termed as "Single depth Intra coding Mode" to efficiently code the smooth area within a depth map. The concept of single depth mode is to simply reconstruct a coding block with a single depth value based on block merging scheme under the HEVC quad-tree based block partitioning. The proposed single depth mode has been adopted into the working draft and 3d-HEVC test model 12 (HTM-12.0). The experimental results evaluated under the common test conditions (CTC) for 3d-HEVC show that the proposed technique achieves up to 5% bit-rate saving for depth coding and on average 0.3% bit-rate saving regarding the synthesis results over the texture and depth bit-rate with decoding time reduced by 4%.

Fast Motion Estimation Based on Perceptual-Aware for the depth Map coding in 3dVC

This paper proposes a perceptual-aware mode decision algorithm to reduce the coding time of 3d video coding (3dVC) with 2d plus depth maps. The algorithm utilizes a factor called "interesting activity" to determine the interesting region and its candidate coding modes of the depth map. The interesting activity is defined based on the characteristic of visual perception for 3d video viewers, where the characteristics are presented by the existence of MBs with object feature in foreground, or with motion information. In interesting regions, the quality of constructed depth map is maintained;in the non-interesting regions, the computation time of the depth map coding is reduced. In the final step of the algorithm, we use the third dimensional search to improve the quality of the re-constructed depth map. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm is implemented in FPGA to achieve a hardware design. Experimental results show that the entire encoding time is reduced by at least 50.6% compared with the exhaustive mode decision approach, and the structural similarity (SSIM) index is increased by at least 0.0291 and the Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) is increased by at least 4.67dB compared with the motion vector (MV) sharing approach. The logic utilization only occupies 8% of the total resource on the Altera dE3-260 FPGA demonstration board.

Capturing a scene using multiple cameras from different angles is expected to provide the necessary interactivity in the 3d space to satisfy end-users' demands for observing objects and actions from different angles and depths. Existing multiview video coding (MVC) technologies are not sufficiently agile to exploit the interactivity and inefficient in terms of image quality and computational time. In this paper a novel technique is proposed using disparity-adjusted 3d MVC (dA-3d-MVC) with 3d motion estimation (ME) and 3d coding to overcome the problems. In the proposed scheme, a 3d frame is formed using the same temporal frames of all disparity-adjusted views and ME is carried out for the current 3d macroblock using the immediate previous 3d frame as a reference frame. Then, 3d coding technique is used for better compression. As all the same temporal position frames of all views are encoded at the same time, the proposed scheme provides better interactivity and reduced computational time compared to the H. 264/MVC. To improve the rate-distortion (Rd) performance of the proposed technique, an additional reference frame comprising dynamic background is also used. Experimental results reveal that the proposed scheme outperforms the H. 264/MVC in terms of Rd performance, computational time, and interactivity.

A fast encoder of frame-compatible format based on content similarity for 3d distribution

Frame compatible format (FCF), which multiplexes the left and right eye views into one frame spatially, has been considered as one of the most promising solutions for 3d video broadcasting. In this paper, a fast algorithm exploiting the content similarity is proposed to reduce the computational complexity for coding FCF. A low complexity average shift estimation method is proposed to find the matching blocks in the two interleaved views, based on which mode candidate sets are designed for accelerating intra and inter coding of the second interleaved view (the interleaved view at the bottom/right in FCF) by exploiting inter-view correlations. The proposed algorithm achieves an average of 72.45% reduction in Intra coding complexity and an average of 81.08% reduction in Inter coding complexity for the second interleaved view, respectively, with negligible loss in compression efficiency. By combining with conventional fast algorithms, that is applying an conventional fast algorithm to code the view on the top/left and the proposed one to code the view on the bottom/right, the whole encoder provides up to 5.44 times higher encoding speed relative to applying the conventional algorithm solely to the whole frame with negligible performance degradation.
