Incolour plus depth map 3d video, depth map is a luminance image that aids the virtual views generation. Since it is not the final image viewed by end user, the conventional depth map compression method, which minimizes the pixel errors of the depth map, introduces more distortions to the virtual rendered images. In this paper, a novel motion estimation scheme for depth map coding is proposed. By employing rendered view distortion in Rate-distortion Optimization, the optimal Motion Vector is determined to improve the rendered views quality. An effective Lagrange multiplier is also derived. Experimental results illustrate that 34%-63% of bit can be saved comparing to the conventional motion estimation method.

One of the main challenges in 3d light-field imaging approaches lies in the massive amount of visual information involved in providing 3d content with sufficient resolution. Consequently, adequate coding tools are essential for efficient transmission and storage of this type of content. In this context, this paper presents and evaluates two coding solutions based on the High Efficiency video coding (HEVC) scheme and for efficient compression of the 3d light-field content. These two coding schemes aim to exploit the 3d geometry-based disparity information in the 3d light field content and replace the block-based disparity estimation. In the first scheme, the disparity map of each view is used to directly derive the vectors for compensation, and in the second scheme these disparity vectors (for all views) are calculated (for non-occluded areas) from the disparity map of the base view. A comparative study of these proposed coding schemes is performed and future research directions are also discussed.

3d video is a technology that has seen a tremendous attention in the recent years. Multiview video coding (MVC) is an extension of the popular H.264 video coding standard and is commonly used to compress 3d videos. It offers an improvement of 20% to 50% in compression efficiency over simulcast encoding of multiview videos using the conventional H.264 video coding standard. However, there are two important problems associated with it: (i) its superior compression performance comes at the cost of significantly higher computational complexity which hampers the real-world realization of MVC encoder in applications such as 3d live broadcasting and interactive Free Viewpoint Television (FTV), and (ii) compressed 3d videos can suffer from packet loss during transmission, which can degrade the viewing quality of the 3d video at the decoder. This thesis aims to solve these problems by presenting techniques to reduce the computational complexity of the MVC encoder and by proposing a consistent error concealment technique for frame losses in 3d video transmission. The thesis first analyses the complexity of the MVC encoder. It then proposes two novel techniques to reduce the complexity of motion and disparity estimation. The first method achieves complexity reduction in the disparity estimation process by exploiting the relationship between temporal levels, type of macroblocks and search ranges while the second method achieves it by exploiting the geometrical relation- ship between motion and disparity vectors in stereo frames. These two methods are then combined with other state-of-the-art methods in a unique framework where gains add up. Experimental results show that the proposed low-complexity framework can reduce the encoding time of the standard MVC encoder by over 93% while maintaining similar compression efficiency performance. As the evolution of multiview display technology is bringing glasses-free 3dTV closer to reality, MPEG and VCEG are preparing an extension to HEVC to encode multiview video content. View synthesis in the current version of the 3d video codec is performed using PSNR as a quality metric measure. In this paper, we propose a full-reference Human-Visual-System based 3d video quality metric to be used in multiview encoding as an alternative to PSNR. Performance of our metric is tested in a 2-view case scenario. The quality of the compressed stereo pair, formed from a decoded view and a synthesized view, is evaluated at the encoder side. The performance is verified through a series of subjective tests and compared with that of PSNR, SSIM, MS-SSIM, VIFp, and VQM metrics. Experimental results showed that our 3d quality metric has the highest correlation with Mean Opinion Scores (MOS) compared to the other tested metrics.

The extension of video applications to enable 3d perception, which typically is considered to include a stereo viewing experience, is emerging as a mass market phenomenon, as is evident from the recent prevalence of 3d major cinema title releases. For high quality 3d video to become a commonplace user experience beyond limited cinema distribution, adoption of an interoperable coded 3d digital video format will be needed. Stereo-view video can also be studied as a special case of the more general technologies of multiview and "free-viewpoint" video systems. The history of standardization work on this topic is actually richer than people may typically realize. The ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), in particular, has been developing interoperability standards to specify various such coding schemes since the advent of digital video as we know it. More recently, the ITU-T Visual coding Experts Group (VCEG) has been involved as well in the Joint video Team (JVT) work on development of 3d features for H.264/14496-10 Advanced video coding, including Multiview video coding (MVC) extensions. This paper surveys the prior, ongoing, and anticipated future standardization efforts on this subject to provide an overview and historical perspective on feasible approaches to 3d and multiview video coding.

In the paper, novel methods for quality control in multiview with depth video compression are described. First, a simple steepest-descent-based algorithm for adjusting quantization parameters for texture and corresponding depth to obtain the maximal quality for a given bitrate is proposed. Then, experimental results are shown, basing on which a mathematical model for calculation of quantization parameters for the depth and texture is proposed. The paper also covers subject of coding depth with different resolution than the texture. The work is presented in context of the most contemporary compression methods related to AVC, but could also be easily adapted to upcoming 3d-video coding extensions of HEVC.

This paper describes extensions to the High Efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard that are active areas of current development in the relevant international standardization committees. While the first version of HEVC is sufficient to cover a wide range of applications, needs for enhancing the standard in several ways have been identified, including work on range extensions for color format and bit depth enhancement, embedded-bitstream scalability, and 3d video. The standardization of extensions in each of these areas will be completed in 2014, and further work is also planned. The design for these extensions represents the latest state of the art for video coding and its applications.

Advanced motion vector coding framework for multiview video sequences

The inconsistency between the temporal motion vector and the disparity vector fields causes a drastic loss in coding performance during multiview video coding. In order to resolve this inconsistency problem, we investigate a new approach for motion vector coding. In this paper, degradation in accuracy using a conventional method is experimentally analyzed using mathematical tools. Then, we introduce a new framework for motion vector coding, including modified Inter-mode and Adaptive direct-mode, in which an advanced motion vector prediction method is employed. The main idea of the proposed motion vector prediction method is to separate each motion vector field from the others. For this purpose, we introduce three alternative motion vectors;a virtual disparity vector, a virtual temporal motion vector and a scaled motion vector. The experimental results show that the proposed method can resolve the inconsistency problem and consequently improve the overall rate-distortion performance. The average bit-rate savings is about 7.3% compared to JMVC 6.0. At maximum, the gain obtained is about 20%, corresponding to a PSNR of 1.42 dB.

View synthesis prediction provides an effective way to reduce inter-view redundancy of multiview video in addition to conventional disparity compensated prediction. Traditional forward warping techniques incur high complexity since an entire picture is typically warped from one viewpoint to another. To reduce this complexity, block-based backward warping is considered as an alternative solution. One difficulty with this approach is that it requires depth information of the current block prior to its encoding. To solve this problem, a novel method is proposed to derive the depth information from neighboring blocks with high accuracy. With the proposed approach, backward warping is enabled using depth information derived from either neighboring spatial ( inter-view) compensated blocks or temporal compensated blocks. As a generalization, the proposed backward warping scheme is not only applied at the pixel level, but at the sub-block level as well. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves an average bitrate savings of 1.2% for coded video vs coded video bitrate, 1.1% for coded video vs total bitrate, and 1.0% for synthesized video vs total bitrate under common test conditions for 3d video coding using HEVC, with maximum gains of greater than 10% for dependent views.
