Comparison of the effects of PBL in 3d virtual environment and F2F on learning and spatial skills

This study aimed to juxtapose the impacts of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) methodology implemented within a three-dimensional (3d) virtual environment against PBL in a conventional face-to-face setting, along with a control group, on students' learning performance, conceptual comprehension, and spatial aptitude. The investigation concentrated on the structure of matter within a seventh-grade science curriculum, encompassing a cohort of 79 students enrolled in the course. The study was conducted under a mixed methods experimental design and comprised three distinct groups: two experimental groups (E1;E2) and one control group (C). The instructional intervention in the E1 group involved utilizing a 3d virtual environment grounded in the problem-based learning method, whereas the E2 group underwent face-to-face instruction employing worksheets derived from problem-based learning. In contrast, the control group received traditional direct instruction from the science teacher through lectures, demonstrations, and question-and-answer sessions, all focusing on the same topic. Pretests and posttests were administered to the participants before and after the experimental interventions, assessing conceptual understanding, spatial visualization, and mental rotation. Additionally, learning tasks completed by the E1 and E2 groups were evaluated using rubrics to assess learning performance. Subsequent to the post-test, individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with randomly selected students from the E1 group. The results indicated that instruction within the problem-based 3d virtual environment significantly enhanced students' learning performance, conceptual understanding, spatial visualization, and mental rotation skills compared to the other instructional conditions.

Oceanographic data such as wave conditions (height, period, direction), wind, and sea currents are often difficult to interpret. What is the sea state given a certain wave height, wave directional spreading, and wind speed (e.g., 2 m, 29 degrees, 18 m/s)? An expert user might be able to imagine the sea conditions with such information, but this will be almost impossible for a non-expert user. The common approach for visualizing oceanographic data and its variability is usually through tables and 2d graphs, for example plots, bar diagrams, and latitude-longitude maps. These visualizations are often limited to displaying raw data values, which still require user interpretation. With the purpose of providing a more intuitive view of the marine environment and sea conditions to a widespread audience, this work presents an experimental web application. The open-source application represents in a realistic and intuitive way the observations from a meteo-oceanographic and seafloor observatory located in the Western Mediterranean;the OBSEA observatory. The user can visualize the marine observatory facilities within a 3d virtual environment that changes and evolves according to the data acquired. This work aims at a digital twin of the seafloor observatory using near-real-time and historical data.

Speech intelligibility in reverberation based on audio-visual scenes recordings reproduced in a 3d virtual environment

Audio-visual scenes were collected in a medium-sized reverberant conference hall through in -field 3rd -order ambisonics impulse response recordings and 360 -degree stereoscopic videos. The visual scenes included cues of the room and the location of the sound sources, without lip -sync -related cues. Speech intelligibility tests based on seven audio-visual scenes were administered inside an immersive virtual 3d environment reproduced through a spherical 16 -speaker array synched with a head -mounted display. Forty normal -hearing subjects were engaged to test the effects on speech intelligibility of a talker in front of the listener and amplified by two lateral symmetrical loudspeakers, in the case of (i) different listener -to -talker distances, (ii) one -talker noise at various azimuth angles around the listener, (iii) high reverberation with -5 dB signal-to-noise ratio, (iv) self -motion, and (v) visual cues. We conducted tests in four configurations, that is, audio-visual and audioonly, both with self -motion and in the static condition. The static audio -only tests scored the highest speech intelligibility, followed by a tie between audio-visual with self -motion and in the static condition. Speech intelligibility decreased as the target -to -listener distance increased in all the noisy scenes. Additionally, speech intelligibility increased when the noise azimuth was at 120 degrees compared to both 180 degrees and 0 degrees , with the talker at approximately 8 m from the listener. The advantage of the spatial separation of the noise signal in reverberation is evident in the case of the audio-visual with self -motion test. This suggests a spatial release from masking in the presence of reverberation, one -talker -interfering noise and within an more ecological scene.

This paper reflects on a virtual Learning environment (VLE) in the context of architecture, urban planning and design. The paper aims to critically assess the ability of virtual environments to support experiential online learning. It contributes to the literature by providing the experimental results of implementing the TERF virtual world for undergraduate and graduate Built environment courses. TERF virtual world provides videos and other communication tools to support collaboration among students. Feedback on the usage and functionality of this 3d virtual platform was collected from students through post evaluation surveys. This experiment provided opportunities to facilitate team communication and a route to more collaborative leaning. It is also discussed the strengths and limitations of the 3d collaborative virtual environment to support deeper learning environment.

This study aimed to understand how children collaborated to create their own stories in a 3d virtual reality (VR) environment and to explore whether there were any gender-related differences in this learning setting. A total of 65 students (38 females and 27 males) of grades 4-5 participated in this study. A qualitative methodology was adopted in this research to answer three research questions about how the participants work collaboratively, whether a gender difference exists in the process of 3d construction and how they think about learning in a 3d virtual environment. Based on the behavior patterns of these participants in a 3d world, the research findings revealed two types of collaboration: a team either with or a team without a strong leader. In addition, gender-related differences in this learning environment were also depicted in this study.

The educational application of 3d virtual environment can create a realistic learning situation to stimulate the learners' initial learning interest and motivation, bring them with a strong sense of immersive. However, because of paying too much attention to the interaction design and the verisimilitude of the learning contents, the instructors in 3d virtual environment often ignore the in-depth design of learning activities, as well as the further strengthening and sustaining on the learners' learning interest and motivation. In this paper, the task based learning method is introduced to 3d virtual environment as the core idea of learning activity design, and combined with the ARCS motivation model, the relevant theoretical designs are completed, including the task based learning activity model and the design principles and framework and the implementation process. Furthermore, a task-based learning activity system and another ordinary learning activity system are implemented in Open-Sim, to be used as the objects of the contrast group quasi-experimental study to validate the validity of the task based learning activities in 3d virtual environment.

Considering the increasing demand for three-dimensional (3d) virtual models in the business of industry and the implication of concepts that are already widely accepted, the investigation was conducted on the methods for obtaining virtual models of the industrial environment, with the case study being conducted in the electric sector. A 3d authoring tool based on parametric models and a data-oriented file structure (conventional in JSON Schema) were developed for the assembly of 3d virtual environment scenarios. In order to demonstrate the usefulness of the developed architectures, we tested their application in the assembly of conceptual scenes of electrical substation arrangements.

The last decade has seen an increasing interest in the use of 3d virtual environments for educational applications. However, very few studies investigated the influence of the learning context, such as class type and learning type, on learners' academic performance. This paper studied the impact of class type (i.e. comprehensive or selective) classes, as well as learning type (i.e. guided or challenge and guided), on students' level of usage of a virtual Learning environment (VLE) as well as on their academic performance. The results showed that, unlike class type, there is a significant difference between learners' in their usage of the VLE. Moreover, the results showed that the levels of using a VLE significantly correlated with learners' academic performance.

Towards a data fabric framework for industrial metaverse integration

The integration of digital and physical assets in industrial settings is increasingly facilitated by the concept of the Industrial Metaverse, a unified platform that leverages advanced technologies like AR/VR/XR to create interconnected 3d environments. As industries within supply chains become more interlinked, the need for seamless integration across these digital environments becomes critical. This paper addresses the challenge of interconnecting private industrial metaverses by proposing a novel data fabric framework that supports diverse modalities, ensures privacy, and adheres to business agreements. We highlight the role of the distributed compute continuum in the framework and demonstrate its practical utility through deployments in Unity and Omniverse across various geographic locations, highlighting the need for AI-based interconnection to optimize real-time analytics and operational scalability. Our experiment shows that even transmitting a 3d patch file, which is considerably smaller than the original base file, across metaverses in different geographic locations requires substantial computational and communication resources, potentially limiting real-time collaboration between metaverses. This observation highlights the importance of AI-based interconnection in enabling a textual metaverse, where instead of transmitting 3d patch objects over the web, only a fine-grained textual description of the patch file is shared. This method allows for more efficient transmission using current networking technology. The textual metaverse is expected to employ an AI-based encoder at the source and an AI-based decoder at the destination to convert the 3d patch into text and subsequently reconstruct it back into the 3d patch.

Towards a multi-scenario immersive virtual reality system for maintenance inspection training of hot strip rolling mills

Maintenance has always been an important part of a mechanical equipment system. Inspection, as part of the activities of maintenance, is conducted by human inspectors whose dependability is fundamental to an effective maintenance system. The inspector should have the superior decision-making ability to deal with unforeseen events in an uncertain environment. This paper proposed a multi-scenario simulation method for authoring an immersive virtual reality (VR) system for inspection training of hot strip rolling mills in order to cost-effectively simulate the uncertainty in the types and locations of equipment defects. To begin, an efficient representation of defect characteristics is developed to model existing and emerging defects. Concurrently, the defect model files and properties are saved and managed in the defect model library to be reused to construct virtual environments (VEs) for various inspection scenarios. Second, the corresponding defect equipment under inspection is established based on the information of inspection scenarios by modifying the original equipment assembly structure, which is built in advance with domain knowledge. The VR system can auto-build VE based on the scene and assembly structure information configured by the training personnel and defect library. Finally, the multi-scenario inspection training system of hot strip rolling mills was applied to the 9th national iron and steel industry vocational skills competition. Following the competition, more than ten companies have implemented the system to train technicians, which improves the training experience and effectiveness.
