Adaptive cross-approximation applied to the solution of system of equations and post-processing for 3d elastostatic problems using the boundary element method

We present the hierarchical matrix (H-matrix) technique combined with the adaptive cross-approximation (ACA) applied to a three-dimensional (3d) elastostatic problem using the boundary element method (BEM). This is used in structural geology and geomechanics for the evaluation of the deformation and perturbed stress field associated with surfaces of displacement discontinuity. Such optimization significantly reduces (i) the time and memory needed for the resolution of the system of equations, but more importantly (ii) the time needed for the post-processing at observation points where the deformation and the perturbed stress field are evaluated. Specifically, it is shown that the H-matrix structure used with the ACA, clearly captures the kernel smoothness during the post-processing stage according to the field point positions, and optimizes the computation accordingly. Combined with the parallelization on multi-core processors, this technique allows intensive computations to be done on personal desktop and laptop computers. Numerical simulations are presented, showing the advantages of such optimizations compared to the standard method. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

3d vesicle dynamics simulations with a linearly triangulated surface

Simulations of biomembranes have gained an increasing interest in the past years. specificities of these membranes propose new challenges for the numerics. In particular, vesicle dynamics are governed by bending forces as well as a surface incompressibility constraint. A method to compute the bending force density resultant onto piecewise linearly triangulated surface meshes is described. This method is coupled with a boundary element method solver for inner and outer fluids, to compute vesicle dynamics under external flows. The surface incompressibility constraint is satisfied by the construction of a projection operator. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Three-dimensional model of fracture propagation is proposed. The model simultaneously accounts rock deformation in the vicinity of a fracture and a cavity, fluid flow inside the fracture and its propagation in the direction that is selected by a growth criterion. The results of the sensitivity analysis of model solution to the variation of model parameters are presented.

Scattering properties of an individual metallic nano-spheroid by the incident polarized light wave

The scattering properties of a metallic nano-spheroid under the illumination of different polarized light waves are investigated using 3d boundary element method The influences of different geometrical sizes of the nano-spheroid and incident directions of the illuminating light wave on the scattering spectrum are studied for different incident polarized light waves The results show that the metallic nano-spheroid has two intrinsic resonant modes corresponding to different polarization states and resonant wavelengths The scattering enhancement the resonant wavelength and the location of the enhanced optical field are strongly dependent on the polarization properties of the illuminating light waves and they can be modulated by appropriately choosing the polarization directions of the incident light wave (C) 2010 Elsevier B V All rights reserved

Analytical and experimental investigation on the hydrodynamic performance of onshore wave-power devices

The hydrodynamic performance of the oscillating water column type shoreline-mounted wave-power device is numerically studied within linear wave theory by using a boundary element method based on the Wehausen and Laitone 3d shallow water Green's function. In order to verify the numerical model, a 1:12 physical model with different bottom slopes was constructed and tested in a wave basin under regular wave conditions. The effects of the bottom slope on the hydrodynamic performance are investigated by both analytical and experimental methods. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

A frequency-domain boundary element method (BEM) is presented for non-synchronous crack interaction analysis in three-dimensional (3d), infinite, isotropic and linear elastic solids with multiple coplanar cracks. The cracks are subjected to non-synchronous time-harmonic crack-surface loading with contrast frequencies. Hypersingular frequency-domain traction boundary integral equations (BIEs) are applied to solve the boundary value problem. A collocation method is adopted for solving the BIEs numerically. The local square-root behavior of the crack-opening-displacements at the crack-front is taken into account in the present method. For two coplanar penny-shaped cracks of equal radius subjected to non-synchronous time-harmonic crack-surface loading, numerical results for the dynamic stress intensity factors are presented and discussed. Simulation of bubble motion in a compressible liquid based on the three dimensional wave equation

A simulation model for bubble motion in a compressible liquid is developed based on the linear wave equation. At the initial stage, the bubble is assumed to be spherical and the wave equation is simplified as a one dimensional ordinary equation in the radial direction through the prophase approximation. When time becomes much larger than that required for a disturbance to travel across the bubble at the speed of the sound, the obtained integral equation is approximated by keeping the term of the first order in terms of the characteristic Mach number, through the anaphase approximation. An equation is introduced to unify the approximations in these two phases, which is then used over the entire simulation period. The problem at each time step is solved by a three dimensional boundary element method. The convergence study has been first taken with meshes and time steps. Comparison is made with the analytical solution for spherical bubble in compressible liquid and good agreement is found. Further comparison is made for a bubble in an incoming acoustic wave. Extensive simulations are then made for a bubble in various conditions, including the cases with solid boundary effect, free surface effect, buoyancy effect, as well as for interactions between bubbles. Three-dimensional boundary element method Applied to Nonlinear Wave Transformation

For higher accuracy in simulating the transformation of three dimensional waves, in consideration of the advantages of constant panels and linear elements, a combined boundary elements is applied in this research. The method can be used to remove the transverse vibration due to the accumulation of computational errors. A combined boundary condition of sponge layer and Sommerfeld radiation condition is used to remove the reflected waves from the computing domain. By following the water particle on the water surface, the third order Stokes wave transform is simulated by the numerical wave flume technique. The computed results are in good agreement with theoretical ones.

An approach to simultaneously reduce the length of bond wires and trace parasitics within substrate-based, chip-on-board (COB), ball grid array (BGA) packages is presented. Three, two-layer, 8mm x 14mm COB BGA packages were modeled and analyzed using Ansoft Turbo Package Analyzer's (TPA) 3d boundary element method (BEM) [1]. The initial package design has long interconnecting bond wires from the die to the substrate's bond fingers. This results in higher costs and parasitic effects that are detrimental to high-speed performance. To shorten the length of interconnecting bond wire per I/O, bond fingers are repositioned nearer to the die. However, this results in long plating stubs that contribute to capacitive parasitic and emits spurious EM radiation [2]. Implementing an etch-back process during substrate fabrication removes these undesirable effects. Results show that trace parasitic capacitance, inductance, and resistance can be reduced by as much as 50%, 35%, and 32%, respectively.

Analysis of three-dimensional cavitating flow over different cavitators using boundary element method

The most essential component in the cavitation flow is the pressure distribution in the flow line where the cavity closes. In this paper, the three-dimensional boundary element method (BEM) is employed to simulate the partial cavitation (cavitation number, sigma between 0.1 to 0.5) around projectiles with different cavitators. The effects of the size of quadrilateral elements on the results of cavity geometry and on the distribution of pressure coefficient obtained by three-dimensional boundary element method are investigated for different kinds of spherical and conical cavitators. It should be noted that choosing a small size of the element cannot certainly lead to accurate results in BEM. Accordingly, based on a comparison of the experimental data with the BEM results, a function of element size is proposed based on the variables of cavitator shape and cavitation number. A comparison of the BEM predictions with the numerical simulation results in ANSYS Fluent software is given. The analysis indicates that satisfactory values can be found for the cavity dimensions and pressure distributions virtually in a few minutes by using BEM with specific quadratic elements.
