This paper describes a low-complexity, high-efficiency, lossy-to-lossless 3d image coding system. The proposed system is based on a novel probability model for the symbols that are emitted by bitplane coding engines. This probability model uses partially reconstructed coefficients from previous components together with a mathematical framework that captures the statistical behavior of the image. An important aspect of this mathematical framework is its generality, which makes the proposed scheme suitable for different types of 3dimages. The main advantages of the proposed scheme are competitive coding performance, low computational load, very low memory requirements, straightforward implementation, and simple adaptation to most sensors. An original 3d subbandcoding scheme is proposed. A separable 3d wavelet, taking full advantage of the 3d structures correlation, decomposes the original volume into subvolumes which can be separately quantized by a uniform scalar quantizer or by a 3d lattice vector quantizer. Concentric hyper-pyramids lying on the cubic lattice are used for searching codewords. A distortion minimization algorithm both selects the best number of decomposition and the best set of quantizers in order to minimize the overall mean square error. The whole algorithm is applied on a 3dimagedata base issued from the Morphometer (a new true 3d X-Ray scanner). The results presented include traditional signal-to-noise ratio performances and a subjective evaluation made by radiologists. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

Free viewpoint video applications and autostereoscopic displays require the transmission of multiple views of a scene together with depth maps. Current compression and transmission solutions just handle these two data streams as separate entities. However, depth maps contain key information on the scene structure that can be effectively exploited to improve the performance of multi-view coding schemes. In this paper we introduce a novel coding architecture that replaces the inter-view motion prediction operation with a 3d warping approach based on depth information to improve the coding performances. Ad-hoc solutions for occluded areas are also provided. Experimental results show that the proposed joint texture-depth compression approach is able to outperform the state-of-the-art H.264 MVC coding standard performances at low bit rates.

A progressive compression and transmission algorithm for PointTexture 3-dimages is proposed in this work. The proposed algorithm represents a PointTexture image hierarchically using an octree, The geometry information in octree nodes is encoded by the predictive partial matching (PPM) method, while the color information is encoded using the discrete cosine transform (dCT). The encoder achieves the progressive transmission of the 3-dimage by transmitting the octree nodes in a top-down manner. We develop two transmission schemes, based on the rate-distortion (R-d) optimization and the view-dependent optimization respectively, to maximize the image quality subject to a given bit budget. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is an efficient method for progressive transmission of 3-ddata. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
