We have studied a stereo-based approach to three-dimensional face modeling and facial image reconstruction virtually viewed from different angles. This paper describes the system, especially image analysis and facial shape feature extraction techniques using information about color and position of face and face components, and image histogram and line segment analysis. Using these techniques, the system can get the facial features precisely, automatically and independent of facial image size and face tilting. In our system, input images viewed from the front and side of the face are processed as follows: the input images axe first transformed into a set of color pictures with significant features. Regions are segmented by thresholding or slicing after analyzing the histograms of the pictures. Using knowledge about color and positions of the face, face and hair regions are obtained and facial boundaries extracted. Feature points along the obtained profile are extracted using information about curvature amplitude and sign, and knowledge about distance between the feature points. In the facial areas which include facial components, regions are again segmented by the same techniques with color information from each face component. The component regions are recognized using knowledge of facial component position. In each region, the pictures are filtered with various differential operators, which are selected according to each picture and region. Thinned images are obtained from the filtered images by various image processing and line segment analysis techniques. Then, feature points of the front and side views are extracted. Finally, the size and position differences and facial tilting between two input images are compensated for by matching the common feature points in the two views. Purpose: Medical schools are shifting from a time-based approach to a competency-based education approach. A competency-based approach requires continuous observation and evaluation of trainees. The goal of Central Line Tutor is to be able to provide instruction and real-time feedback for trainees learning the procedure of central venous catheterization, without requiring a continuous expert observer. The purpose of this study is to test the accuracy of the workflow detection method of Central Line Tutor. This study also looks at the effectiveness of object recognition from a webcam video for workflow detection. Methods: Five trials of the procedure were recorded from Central Line Tutor. Five reviewers were asked to identify the timestamp of the transition points in each recording. Reviewer timestamps were compared to those identified by Central Line Tutor. differences between these values were used to calculate average transitional delay. Results: Central Line Tutor was able to identify 100% of transition points in the procedure with an average transitional delay of -1.46 +/- 0.81s. The average transitional delay of EM and webcam tracked steps were -0.35 +/- 2.51s and -2.46 +/- 3.57s respectively. Conclusions: Central line tutor was able to detect completion of all workflow tasks with minimal delay and may be used to provide trainees with real-time feedback. The results also show that object recognition from a webcam video is an effective method for detecting workflow tasks in the procedure of central venous catheterization.

Cadaveric computed tomography (CT) data are incredibly valuable resources that can support a variety of biomedical education and research endeavors.1–6 These tremendous sources of anatomical information can be used to generate cadaver-specific 3d anatomical models to greatly enhance the learning outcomes for gross anatomy students.7 Unfortunately, cadaveric CT data are also inherently challenging to properly utilize. The main obstacles to successfully extracting accurate anatomical structures for this objective include: the presence of encompassing preserved soft tissue, immediately adjacent anatomical structures of the same tissue type as that of the structure of interest, and CT imaging artifacts that arise from metal medical implants (see Fig. 1). Consequently, it is unfeasible for anatomy faculty or gross anatomy students to obtain cadaveric-specific 3d anatomical models. Furthermore, the challenge of extracting accurate 3d anatomical morphology from cadaveric CT data obstructs many biomedical research avenues. The current investigation establishes a protocol for extracting and analyzing the morphology of osteological structures from cadaveric CT data, which can be employed to augment gross anatomy curricula and galvanize biomedical research.

In this paper, we provide a thorough overview of recent advances in 3d surface imaging technologies. We focus particularly on non-contact 3d surface measurement techniques based on structured illumination. The high-speed and high-resolution pattern projection capability offered by the digital light processing (dLP) technology, together with the recent advances in imaging sensor technologies, may enable new generation systems for 3d surface measurement applications that provide much better functionality and performance than existing ones, in terms of speed, accuracy, resolution, size, cost, and ease of use. Performance indexes of 3d imaging systems in general are discussed and various 3d surface imaging schemes are categorized, illustrated, and compared. Calibration techniques are also discussed since they play critical roles in achieving the required precision. Benefits and challenges of using dLP technology in 3d imaging applications are discussed. Numerous applications of 3d technologies are discussed with several examples.

At Ford Motor Company, thrust bearing in drill motors is often damaged by metal chips. Since the vibration frequency is several Hz only, it is very difficult to use accelerometers to pick up the vibration signals. Under the support of Ford and NASA, we propose to use a piezo, film as a sensor to pick up the slow vibrations of the bearing. Then a neural net based fault detection algorithm is applied to differentiate normal bearing from bad bearing. The first step involves a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) which essentially extracts the significant frequency components in the sensor. Then Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is used to further reduce the dimension of the frequency components by extracting the principal features inside the frequency components. The features can then be used to indicate the status of bearing. Experimental results are very encouraging.

This paper presents a real time image processor for obtaining threedimensional( 3-d) distance information from image sequence caused by a moving area sensor. The processor has been developed for an automated visual inspection robot system (pilot system) with an autonomous vehicle which moves around avoiding obstacles in a power plant and checks whether there are defects or abnormal phenomena such as steam leakage from valves. The processor detects the distance between objects in the input image and the area sensor deciding corresponding points(pixels) between the first input image and the last one by tracing the loci of edges through the sequence of sixteen images. The hardware which plays an important role is two kinds of boards: mapping boards which can transform X-coordinate (horizontal direction) and Y-coordinate (vertical direction) for each horizontal row of images and a regional labelling board which extracts the connected loci of edges through image sequence. This paper also shows the whole processing flow of the distance detection algorithm. Since the processor can continuously process images ( 512x512x8 [pixels*bits per frame] ) at the NTSC video rate it takes about O. 7[sec] to measure the 3d distance by sixteen input images. The error rate of the measurement is maximum 10 percent when the area sensor laterally moves the range of 20 [centimeters] and when the measured scene including complicated background is at a distance of 4 [meters] from

This paper introduces two 3d visual systems toward ultra-realistic communication. The first system includes integral photography video camera that uses a lens array and a 4K2K-resolution video camera for the capture of ray information at slightly separated locations. The second system includes camera array that uses 300 cameras to capture ray information at more sparse locations than integral photography. Both systems use electronic holography as an ideal 3d display. These systems are characterized in that the ray-based image sensors are used to capture 3d objects under natural light and electronic holography is used to reconstruct the 3d objects.

A technique for recoding multidimensional data in a representation of reduced dimensionality is presented. A non-linear encoder-decoder for multidimensional data with compact representations is developed. The technique of training a neural network to learn the identity map through a `bottleneck' is extended to networks with non-linear representations, and an objective function which penalizes entropy of the hidden unit activations is shown to result in low dimensional encodings. For scalar time series data, a common technique is phase-space reconstruction by embedding the time-lagged scalar signal in a higher dimensional space. Choosing the proper embedding dimension is difficult. By using non-linear dimensionality reduction, the intrinsic dimensionality of the underlying system may be estimated.

We present a computational method for determining the characteristic views of general quadric-surfaced solids. Each characteristic view (CV) is a representative view of a characteristic-view domain (CVd). The viewing space of a solid is fully described by its CVs and the CVd graph (or aspect graph) which shows the interrelationships among the CVds. The paper discusses the feasibility of using the CV concept for 3d object recognition and pose estimation. An illustrative example is included.
