A wavelet subdivision surfaces based multiple description 3d model coding with optimal reconstruction filtering approach is proposed in this paper to transmit 3d models over mediums with possible packet loss with higher quality. The proposed method is based on the wavelet subdivision surfaces strategy for 3d model coding and introduces optimal reconstruction filtering. Initially, remeshing is performed for any 3d model to obtain a semi-regular mesh structure which includes an irregular base mesh and regular wavelet (detail) coefficients of finer levels. Next, multiple descriptions of detail coefficients are obtained using Multiple description Scalar Quantization (MdSQ) to be encoded using SPIHT. In the proposed approach, reconstructed multiple descriptions are applied to optimal filters, that are obtained at the encoder so as to reduce the reconstruction error between the original model and encoded model. Each transmitted description therefore includes encoded 3d data as well as optimal reconstruction filter coefficients. Experimental results show that the optimal reconstruction filtering approach reduces the distortion of standard MdSQ based 3d model coding.

An efficient fine-granular scalable coding algorithm of 3-d mesh sequences for low-latency streaming applications is proposed in this work. First, we decompose a mesh sequence into spatial and temporal layers to support scalable decoding. To support the finest-granular spatial scalability, we decimate only a single vertex at each layer to obtain the next layer. Then, we predict the coordinates of decimated vertices spatially and temporally based on a hierarchical prediction structure. Last, we quantize and transmit the spatio-temporal prediction residuals using an arithmetic coder. We propose an efficient context model for the arithmetic coding. Experiment results show that the proposed algorithm provides significantly better compression performance than the conventional algorithms, while supporting finer-granular spatial scalability.

Off-line scanning, coding, transmission and remote animation of the human affect represents a possible processing pipeline for providing 3d immersion in virtual worlds. In this paper we target applications that make use of compact and scalable 3d representations of human affect and require close control over the local error introduced by lossy coding of the mesh geometry. To satisfy this requirement, we propose a novel L-infinite wavelet-based semi-regular mesh coding system. The system lies in contrast with classical mesh coding approaches which make use of the L-2 distortion metric. Specifically, in contrast to an L-2 driven implementation, the proposed system provides a bound on the local error on each vertex resulting from scalar embedded quantization of the wavelet coefficients. The experiments show that the proposed system provides scalability in L-infinite sense and that it outperforms the state-of-the art in L-infinite mesh coding.

3d video objects provide the same functionalities as virtual computer graphics objects but depict the motion and appearance of real world moving objects. They can be viewed interactively from any direction and integrated in complete 3d scenes with other virtual and real world elements. So far, related work only considered extraction, representation, and rendering methods. Compression and transmission has not yet been studied in detail and combined with the other components into one complete system. In this paper, we present such a complete si-stem for efficient 3d video object extraction, representation, coding, and interactive rendering. data representation is based on 3d mesh models and view-dependent texture mapping using video textures. The geometry extraction is based on a shape-from-silhouette algorithm. The resulting voxel models are converted into 3d meshes that are coded using MPEG-4 SNHC tools. The corresponding video textures are preprocessed taking the object's shape into account and coded using an H.264/AVC codec. The presented results illustrate that based on the proposed methods a complete transmission system for 3d video objects can be built

A rate-distortion (R-d) optimized progressive coding algorithm for three-dimensional (3d) meshes is proposed in this work. We propose the prioritized gate selection and the curvature prediction to improve the connectivity and geometry compression performance, respectively. Furthermore, based on the bit plane coding, we develop a progressive transmission method, which improves the qualities of intermediate meshes as well as that of the fully reconstructed mesh, and extend it to the view-dependent transmission method. Experiments on various 3d mesh models show that the proposed algorithm provides significantly better compression performance than the conventional algorithms, while supporting progressive reconstruction efficiently.

In this work, a novel three-dimensional (3d) mesh sequence compression amework suitable for progressive streaming is described. The proposed approach first implements a temporal frame-clustering algorithm based on the curvature of pivot vertex trajectory. Then, a decorrelation method is used to remove the redundancy of data in x. y, and z coordinates. Next, to reduce the amount of mesh sequence data, the vertex motion trajectory data in each cluster is compressed using principal component analysis (PCA). Further, the coefficients of x, and z coordinates obtained from different principal components are considered as mesh signals, which are processed by a spectral graph wavelet transform(SGWT). Finally, the obtained wavelet coefficients are encoded using CSPECK. By transmitting data on different hit-planes from encoder, a 31) mesh sequence is encoded into a multi-resolution sequence. Experimental results show that the proposed method can realize progressive streaming of mesh sequence. Furthermore, the results also show that the proposed approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of storage space requirement and minimizing the reconstruction error.

dynamic mesh sequence (dMS) is a simple and accurate representation for precisely recording a 3d animation sequence. despite its simplicity, this representation is typically large in data size, making storage and transmission expensive. This paper presents a novel framework that allows effective dMS compression and progressive streaming by eliminating spatial and temporal redundancy. To explore temporal redundancy, we propose a temporal frame-clustering algorithm to organize dMS frames by their motion trajectory changes, eliminating intracluster redundancy by principal component analysis dimensionality reduction. To eliminate spatial redundancy, we propose an algorithm to transform the coordinates of mesh vertex trajectory into a decorrelated trajectory space, generating a new spatially nonredundant trajectory representation. We finally apply a spectral graph wavelet transform with color set partitioning embedded block encoding to turn the resultant dMS into a multiresolution representation to support progressive streaming. Experiment results show that our method outperforms several existing methods in terms of storage requirement and reconstruction quality.
