Three-dimensional models are being used in more and more applications. Although the ever increasing computing power of personal computers has been providing strong support to these applications, unreliable network is still a restricting factor, especially for mobile applications. As such, we in this work study several different broad strategies for 3d model transmission over unreliable network and comparatively analyze the advantages and disadvantages of each strategy. On one hand, this comparative study can guide the selection of an appropriate strategy for concrete applications;on the other, it provides a starting point for deeper investigation in robust and efficient 3d mesh transmission over unreliable network.

Current progressive coding methods of 3d model ignore the restoration of the sharp regions of the simplified model, which are very important in some specific areas such as medical stereo image processing, 3d film industry and digital certification. The paper proposes a novel progressive coding algorithm for 3d model. Based on the progressive transformation, the presented algorithm combines mesh segmentation and mesh coding for decoding the sharp regions early. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm needs only a little simplified information to restore the sharp regions highly.

We present a generic framework for compression of densely sampled three-dimensional (3d) surfaces in order to satisfy the increasing demand for storing large amounts of 3d content. We decompose a given surface into patches that are parameterized as elevation maps over planar domains and resampled on regular grids. The resulting shaped images are encoded using a state-of-the-art wavelet image coder. We show that our method is not only applicable to mesh- and point-based geometry, but also outperforms current surface encoders for both primitives.

In recent days, applications using 3d animation models are increasing. Since the 3d animation model contains a huge amount of information, data compression is needed for efficient storage or transmission. Although there have been various proposals for 3d model coding, most works have considered only static connectivity and geometry information. Only a few studies have been presented for 3d animation models. This paper presents a coding scheme for 3d animation models using a new 3d segmentation algorithm. For an accurate segmentation, we take advantage of temporal coherence in the generic animated 3d model. After the motion vector of each vertex is mapped onto the surface of the unit sphere in the spherical coordinate system, we partition the surface of the sphere equally to have the same area. We then reconstruct in-between 3d models using the reconstructed key frame and an affine motion model for each segmented unit.

In this paper we propose an object-based stereo image coding algorithm. The algorithm relies on modeling of the object structure using 3d wire-frame models, and motion estimation using globally rigid and locally deformable motion models. Algorithms for the estimation of motion and structure parameters from stereo images are described. Motion parameters are used to construct predicted images at subsequent time instances by mapping the image texture on the object surface. coding of object parameters, appearing background regions and prediction errors is investigated and experimental results with video-conference scenes are presented. The proposed algorithm is very efficient for applications like stereoscopic video transmission, and is especially suited to advanced applications such as generation and transmission of intermediate views for multiview receiver systems, as well as applications in which an object-wise editing of the bit-stream is required, such as video-production using preanalysed scenes or virtual reality applications.
