A component level designing method based on object-orientation is presented in this paper, which supports re-usable 3d graphics. The performance, the designing method and primitive growing algorithms are analyzed. A component is realized which supports the 3d virtual scene, modeling, and motion simulation. The athletic hierarchical linkage relation and data structure are described. Under the virtual environment, numerical control milling machine modeling and motion process simulation are applied successfully. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Use of 2G HTS coated conductors in several power applications has become popular in recent years. Their large current density under high magnetic fields makes them suitable candidates for high power capacity applications such as stacks of tapes, coils, magnets, cables and current leads. For this reason, modeling and simulation of their electromagnetic properties is very desirable in the design and optimization processes. For many applications, when symmetries allow it, simple models consisting of 1d or 2d representations are well suited for providing a satisfying description of the problem at hand. However, certain designs such as racetrack coils and finite-length or non-straight stacks, do pose a 3d problem that cannot be easily reduced to a 2d configuration. Full 3d models have been developed, but their use for simulating superconducting devices is a very challenging task involving a large-scale computational problem. In this work, we present a new method to simulate the electromagnetic transient behavior of 2G HTS stacks and coils. The method, originally used to model stacks of straight superconducting tapes or circular coils in 2d, is now extended to 3d. The main idea is to construct an anisotropic bulk-like equivalent for the stack or coil, such that the geometrical layout of the internal alternating structures of insulating, metallic, superconducting and substrate layers is reduced while keeping the overall electromagnetic behavior of the original device. Besides the aforementioned interest in modeling and simulating 2G HTS coated conductors, this work provides a further step towards efficient 3d modeling and simulation of superconducting devices for large-scale applications.

In this study, slip casting and microwave hybrid sintering of Al2O3 bimodal powder mixtures were conducted to observe the effect on packing factor and densification behavior of different compositions. The powder mixtures contained up to 50 vol% fine particles. It was found that the green density increased remarkably with the addition of fine particles into coarse ones, and the composition having 30 vol% fine particles had the highest relative density of 72.7%. A similar behavior was also observed in sintered samples, where the sintered densities were also higher for bimodal compositions. Moreover, 3d modeling of the system was carried out, and the sintering behavior was simulated and compared with the experimental data. It was shown that with the same relative green density of 50% solid volume for all samples, the composition with 40 vol% fine particles exhibited the highest relative sintered density of 92.1%. The sintering behavior was also predicted for highly dense modeled structures, which could not be obtained experimentally, and pore analysis was performed. It was observed that the closed porosity increased with the addition of fine particles, while the pore size distribution significantly reduced, where 81.4 vol% pores had pore sizes of only up to 0.28 mu m.

Investigating the motion modes of smooth/rough micro/nanoparticles with circular crowned roller geometry and computing the maximum force

The exact positioning of micro/nanoparticles is essential in the construction of micro/nanoscale structures. Of course, the shape of a particle and the external force application location on it influence the type of behavior exhibited by that particle during its displacement on a surface. In former works, biological and non-biological particles have been modeled as cylindrical or spherical particles, while the shape of many such particles is a combination of these two geometries. In this paper, the driving and displacement of particles with circular crowned roller geometry on a substrate by means of an AFM cantilever tip have been modeled three-dimensionally. For a more realistic modeling of actual particle conditions, the Cooper model has been developed for this geometry and the effects of surface roughness have been incorporated into the model. By using the presented model, the forces applied on particle during the manipulation process, the deformations induced in the AFM cantilever, the rotation center and the maximum force applied on particle can be computed and the motion modes of particle (sliding, rolling, rotating) at the onset of displacement can be predicted. The findings indicate that the critical forces associated with rough particles are smaller than those for smooth particles. Furthermore, the effects of particle dimensions and roughness parameters such as the radius and height of asperities and also the effect of AFM tip location on a particle on its motion modes have been studied and the suitable conditions for creating different motion modes have been discussed.

Application of 3d imaging and analysis techniques for the study of food plant cellular deformations during drying

In this investigation, novel 3d imaging and image-analysis tools have been used to observe the deformations of food-plant tissues and single cells during convective air drying at 70 degrees C. A comprehensive investigation was performed to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze the shrinkage and surface wrinkling of Royal Gala apple parenchyma cellular structure during drying. To study the cellular morphology, 3d contour maps produced by a novel 3d image and surface analysis tool, "Nanovea Expert 3d" were used. ImageJ software was used to quantify the single cell morphological characteristics. during the study, each tissue was observed continuously for the gradual morphological alterations. It was evident that there is a significant reduction of surface roughness during the drying process. In the case of individual cells, the area reduced approximately by 20% and diameter by 11%. This study provides conclusive proof that 3d contour maps and images combined with the 2d microscopic images could be a highly valuable source of information in producing data for the validation of 3d computational plant tissue drying models and simulations.

In the paper, a novel framework is proposed for comprehensive effectiveness analysis of physical protection system using 3d models and simulation. Within the framework, the Autodesk 3ds Max and Unity real-time development platform is used for 3d modeling of security critical infrastructures. Then the vulnerable intrusion paths are identified using an enhanced heuristic search algorithm in the 3d scenery by integrating with the space-time bounded detection field. Finally, force-on-force training is carried out using reinforcement learning to determine the probability of neutralization and response paths. The demonstration results show that the enhanced heuristic-based algorithm is promising for real-time adversary path planning in 3d scenes. The reinforcement learning-based response force model can quickly track down the enemy to support for neutralization analysis.

A prototype of an express risk assessment system is proposed and implemented as a combination of a distributed simulator and a web interface. A case of aerosol dispersion in an urban environment is investigated. Fast response of the system is achieved by replacing complex 3d simulations with information retrieval from aerosol dispersion database. The database is created by extensive simulations of different aerosol dispersion scenarios. Cluster or grid computing environments are most suitable for these type of simulations. The reduction of system response from a few days to several seconds can be achieved compared to real-time 3d simulations.

The research of this thesis develops and implements a computational model of the SBXC Glider utilized in the Tactical Long-Endurance Unmanned Aerial System (TaLEUAS) project in order to simulate the aerodynamic performance of the airframe and compare it with real flight data. The broader goals are first, to provide a methodology for simulating a glider design with the intention to develop an optimization process or to evaluate a new design using computational tools; and second, to allow students to follow an easy process in which to undertake similar aerodynamic analyses. The fluid behavior is studied using computer software such as Ansys CFX, which is based mathematically on finite element methods. To validate and verify the methodology developed, a mathematical comparison was made with the previous research data obtaining a similar region for best flying behavior. Recommendations are given to increase the accuracy of the flying performance for velocities greater than 15 m/s.
