Edge-protected IdW-based dEM detail enhancement and 3d terrain visualization

terrain visualization plays an important role in digital Twin, geology, environmental science, and exploration. Generating 3d visualization results by the digital Elevation Model (dEM) is an effective method. However, existing dEM 3d visualization methods generally lack sufficient detail to obtain good visual effects. Therefore, we propose a novel dEM detail enhancement and 3d terrain visualization method. Our method is based on the Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) algorithm and the edge-protected Inverse distance Weighted (IdW) algorithm, and achieves 3d visualization of dEM data through a workflow of converting the raw dEM data into an image, followed by enhancement and detail optimization of the image, and finally converting the image into triangular meshes. The edge-protected IdW algorithm performs IdW interpolation optimization based on the Canny edge detector combined with the Otsu threshold optimization method to detect edge areas, achieving smooth transitions in the edge areas. Experiments show that our method generates detail-rich 3d visualization results after enhancing original dEM data. We also conducted an ablation study to provide a side-by-side comparison of each step. Our method can be further applied to many tasks, such as virtual reality, GIS, and geological exploration.

Large scale 3d digital terrain modeling is a crucial part of many real-time applications in geoinformatics. In recent years, the improved speed and precision in spatial data collection make the original terrain data more complex and bigger, which poses challenges for data management, visualization and analysis. In this work, we presented an effective and comprehensive 3d terrain representation based on local curvature entropy and a dynamic Quadtree. The Level-of-detail (LOd) models of significant terrain features were employed to generate hierarchical terrain surfaces. In order to reduce the radical changes of grid density between adjacent LOds, local entropy of terrain curvature was regarded as a measure of subdividing terrain grid cells. Then, an efficient approach was presented to eliminate the cracks among the different LOds by directly updating the Quadtree due to an edge-based structure proposed in this work. Furthermore, we utilized a threshold of local entropy stored in each parent node of this Quadtree to flexibly control the depth of the Quadtree and dynamically schedule large-scale LOd terrain. Several experiments were implemented to test the performance of the proposed method. The results demonstrate that our method can be applied to construct LOd 3d terrain models with good performance in terms of computational cost and the maintenance of terrain features. Our method has already been deployed in a geographic information system (GIS) for practical uses, and it is able to support the real-time dynamic scheduling of large scale terrain models more easily and efficiently. Three-dimensional (3d) terrain visualization is the main content of 3d GIS. As a branch of computer graphics, it is a subject about the display, simplification, simulation of digital terrain model (dTM) or digital elevation model (dEM). It can simulate 2d image of 3d terrain fast and realistically. Mountain Taishan, a famous scenic area, boasts not only its splendid culture but also its special landform. It is significant to visualize its terrain with 3d technology. Firstly, on basis of dissertating the related concept and function, the main flow is studied and planned, which points out the data sources and processing steps. Secondly, by using available remote sensing image (ETM+), dEM (SRTM) and digitalized vector data of geographic elements, we created terrain model in TIN generation algorithm within the data platform ArcGIS, and achieved dynamic display of 3d scene, information query and spatial analysis. The results show that slopes in Mountain Taishan mostly range from 10 to 30 degrees, and the proportion of sunny slope weighs larger. Finally, the research achievement and its applicability are discussed. The research results will be helpful for the tourism planning and development, agricultural production, and geological investigation in Taishan area.

The 3d terrain visualization of coastal zone is based on the seamless integration of geospatial data from water to land. Because of the differences in surveying methods and application areas, the land elevation data and the water-depth data are different in spatial reference, data accuracy and data type. This paper presents a methodology to integrate multi-source terrain data of coastal zone and build an integrated dEM from water to land. Based on the C++ and OpenGL, this paper offers a 3d visualization system which realizes the realistic 3d terrain visualization of coastal zone with the instantaneous shorelines generation.

In recent times, the online 3d terrain visualization has created much interest in many applications such as land information system, military, environmental, tourism and mapping science. Many systems such as CityGML, Terraserver, Google Earth and Spaceye3d have successfully adopted this technology in their system for different applications. The aim of this paper is to compare the effectiveness of developing online 3d terrain visualization by using three popular GIS Software;R2V, Arc View 3.2 and Arc GIS 9.2. In this paper, we implement the system based on the digital Elevation Model (dEM) and Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN) for the terrain data and then overlay with satellite image. Finally, the effectiveness of online 3d terrain rendering in terms of terrain visualization quality, file size, and loading time are made to compare the quality of the systems. The results help the developers on finding the right software to be used for their online 3d terrain visualization.

The objective of this paper is to discuss the effectiveness of visualizing online 3d terrain draped with different satellite imageries. The topographic data of the study area were obtained from the contour maps of Universiti Putra Malaysia, Selangor, Malaysia. The high resolution satellite imageries used in this project involving QUICKBIRd (0.6 m resolution), IKONOS (1 m resolution), and SPOT5 (5 m resolution). R2V software was used for editing the contour data, whereas Arc GIS was used for overlaying the imageries over the 3d terrain data. Then the data were exported into Virtual Reality Markup Language to compare the effectiveness of different satellite imageries based on the data file size, imageries size, number of images tile, loading time during office hours (from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and out of office hours (after 5 p.m.), frame rate per second, and visualization quality. The results revealed that IKONOS satellite imageries are better for an effective online 3d terrain visualization utilizing GIS data even though it has lower resolution compared to QUICKBIRd.

This paper presents a method for view-dependent texture management into a large terrain 3d visualization system. The proposed system can handle several collections of images, each one subdivided in tiles and stored in a database management system (dBMS). The main contribution of this work is a methodology for managing multi-resolution textures in multiple caching levels (database, main memory and graphics card memory), while making use of coherence between successive frames and combined with frustum culling to generate a visually relevant terrain 3d scene using hardware with limited resources.
