A fast encoder of frame-compatible format based on content similarity for 3d distribution

Frame compatible format (FCF), which multiplexes the left and right eye views into one frame spatially, has been considered as one of the most promising solutions for 3d video broadcasting. In this paper, a fast algorithm exploiting the content similarity is proposed to reduce the computational complexity for coding FCF. A low complexity average shift estimation method is proposed to find the matching blocks in the two interleaved views, based on which mode candidate sets are designed for accelerating intra and inter coding of the second interleaved view (the interleaved view at the bottom/right in FCF) by exploiting inter-view correlations. The proposed algorithm achieves an average of 72.45% reduction in Intra coding complexity and an average of 81.08% reduction in Inter coding complexity for the second interleaved view, respectively, with negligible loss in compression efficiency. By combining with conventional fast algorithms, that is applying an conventional fast algorithm to code the view on the top/left and the proposed one to code the view on the bottom/right, the whole encoder provides up to 5.44 times higher encoding speed relative to applying the conventional algorithm solely to the whole frame with negligible performance degradation. This paper describes extensions to the High Efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard that are active areas of current development in the relevant international standardization committees. While the first version of HEVC is sufficient to cover a wide range of applications, needs for enhancing the standard in several ways have been identified, including work on range extensions for color format and bit depth enhancement, embedded-bitstream scalability, and 3d video. The standardization of extensions in each of these areas will be completed in 2014, and further work is also planned. The design for these extensions represents the latest state of the art for video coding and its applications.

Advanced motion vector coding framework for multiview video sequences

The inconsistency between the temporal motion vector and the disparity vector fields causes a drastic loss in coding performance during multiview video coding. In order to resolve this inconsistency problem, we investigate a new approach for motion vector coding. In this paper, degradation in accuracy using a conventional method is experimentally analyzed using mathematical tools. Then, we introduce a new framework for motion vector coding, including modified Inter-mode and Adaptive direct-mode, in which an advanced motion vector prediction method is employed. The main idea of the proposed motion vector prediction method is to separate each motion vector field from the others. For this purpose, we introduce three alternative motion vectors;a virtual disparity vector, a virtual temporal motion vector and a scaled motion vector. The experimental results show that the proposed method can resolve the inconsistency problem and consequently improve the overall rate-distortion performance. The average bit-rate savings is about 7.3% compared to JMVC 6.0. At maximum, the gain obtained is about 20%, corresponding to a PSNR of 1.42 dB.

The 3d extension of high efficiency video coding (3d-HEVC) adopts a view synthesis optimization (VSO) technique to improve the quality of synthesized views for depth map coding. The exact synthesized view distortion change (SVdC) is calculated in VSO which in turn brings huge coding complexity to the 3d-HEVC encoder due to the real view synthesis process. This work presents a scheme aimed at reducing coding complexity of the SVdC calculating process in the 3d-HEVC encoder. It skips line segments of pixels with variable lengths based on information from both of the textures and depth maps in the SVdC calculation. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can reduce the coding complexity without any significant loss in rate distortion performance for the synthesized views. 3d-HEVC is the latest coding standard for 3d video with the video format of multi-view texture plus depth map (MVd). The depth map is capable of assisting the prediction, synthesizing virtual views, or rendering the stereo display. depth modelling mode is adopted in 3d-HEVC to improve the efficiency of depth intra coding but increases the coding time. This paper proposes a fast algorithm to accelerate the depth intra coding by making use of the variances of the boundary pixels to decide whether to execute dMM or not. The experimental results show that the proposed method can reduce the total coding time from 10.1% to 18.6% with different parameter settings and maintain good video quality.

As the state-of-the-art video coding standard, High Efficiency video coding (HEVC) has been finalized in January 2013. To support the coding of multiple views and associated depth data, the development of the HEVC extension for 3d video coding is also about to be finalized. New coding unit (CU) level coding tools are added to the HEVC design to improve the compression capabilities for both video views and depth data. In this paper, we introduce a new coding mode termed as "Single depth Intra coding Mode" to efficiently code the smooth area within a depth map. The concept of single depth mode is to simply reconstruct a coding block with a single depth value based on block merging scheme under the HEVC quad-tree based block partitioning. The proposed single depth mode has been adopted into the working draft and 3d-HEVC test model 12 (HTM-12.0). The experimental results evaluated under the common test conditions (CTC) for 3d-HEVC show that the proposed technique achieves up to 5% bit-rate saving for depth coding and on average 0.3% bit-rate saving regarding the synthesis results over the texture and depth bit-rate with decoding time reduced by 4%.

MV-HEVC is a 3d extension of the High Efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard, which is developed to improve the coding efficiency of multi-view video. However, this improved efficiency leads to greater computational complexity. Recently, how to reduce the encoding time for multi-view coding is becoming a hot issue in real-time applications. In this paper, a fast coding unit (CU) decision algorithm is proposed by utilizing spatiotemporal and inter-view information, including the maximum depth level of related CUs and motion vectors. Firstly, the maximum depth level of current CU is predicted by using spatiotemporal and inter-view CUs. Then, it will be adjusted by checking whether the current CU has the same motion feature with nearby spatial CUs. Experimental results show that our proposed algorithm can achieve up to 67.16 % time reduction with a little degradation in encoding efficiency.

In this paper, we propose a new frame level rate control algorithm for the high efficiency video coding (HEVC) based 3d video (3dV) compression standard. In the proposed scheme, a new initial quantization parameter (QP) decision scheme is provided, and the bit allocation for each view is investigated to smooth the bitrate fluctuation and reach accurate rate control. Meanwhile, a simplified complexity estimation method for the extended view is introduced to reduce the computational complexity while improves the coding performance. The experimental results on 3dV test sequences demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can achieve better R-d performance and more accurate rate control compared to the benchmark algorithms in HTM10.0. The maximum performance improvement can be up to 12.4% and the average Bd-rate gain for each view is 5.2%, 6.5% and 6.6% respectively.

In this paper, we propose a synthesized views distortion model based rate control algorithm for the high efficiency video coding (HEVC) based 3d video compression standard. The major contributions of the paper include the following two aspects. Firstly, we investigate the distortion dependency between the synthesized views and the coded views including texture video and depth maps. Then we propose a synthesized views distortion model for 3d-HEVC, and based on the distortion model an efficient joint bit allocation scheme is proposed. Experimental results show that the proposed rate control algorithm achieves better performance on both the coded texture views and synthesized views. The maximum overall (including all coded texture views and all synthesized views) performance improvement can be up to 14.4% and the average Bd-rate gain is 6.9%. Moreover, it can accurately control the bitrate to satisfy the total bitrate constraint.

View synthesis prediction provides an effective way to reduce inter-view redundancy of multiview video in addition to conventional disparity compensated prediction. Traditional forward warping techniques incur high complexity since an entire picture is typically warped from one viewpoint to another. To reduce this complexity, block-based backward warping is considered as an alternative solution. One difficulty with this approach is that it requires depth information of the current block prior to its encoding. To solve this problem, a novel method is proposed to derive the depth information from neighboring blocks with high accuracy. With the proposed approach, backward warping is enabled using depth information derived from either neighboring spatial ( inter-view) compensated blocks or temporal compensated blocks. As a generalization, the proposed backward warping scheme is not only applied at the pixel level, but at the sub-block level as well. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves an average bitrate savings of 1.2% for coded video vs coded video bitrate, 1.1% for coded video vs total bitrate, and 1.0% for synthesized video vs total bitrate under common test conditions for 3d video coding using HEVC, with maximum gains of greater than 10% for dependent views.
