Nowadays, there are many kinds of technologies to provide multimedia TV content in different formats and picture quality. Three-dimensional (3d) video is one of the next generation TV services with specific features from the video image quality point of view. Naturally, efficient compression tools enabling significant bit rate reduction to ease 3d video distribution are an integral part of any practical 3d video system implementation. In this paper, we present a study of recent and upcoming compression tools for stereoscopic videos. We consider H.264 Advanced video coding (AVC), H.264 Annex H - Multiview video coding (MVC), H.265 High Efficiency video coding (HEVC) and H.265 Annex G - Multiview High Efficiency video coding (MV-HEVC) video coding formats to process stereoscopic videos with different properties. To compare the performance of considered compression tools, we provide an analysis of the encoded/decoded stereoscopic video quality using objective metrics.

In 3d video compression, depth map is normally compressed by resolution reduction. To avoid artifacts in views synthesized with the reduced resolution depth map, up-sampling approaches based on special properties of depth map have been proposed. Most previous studies do not apply rate-distortion control and the quality of depth map and synthesized views is not always guaranteed because their re-sampling processes are out of the coding loop. This paper proposes a novel in-loop reduced resolution depth coding based on the scheme of a reduced resolution update mode. This is achieved by encoding prediction residuals at reduced resolution, which was obtained by performing prediction using full resolution references. We also propose an effective method for reduction of resolution for residuals and reconstruction of depth map based on Texture and predicted depth map. Experiments showed that it is possible to achieve bitrate reductions of up to 2.09% and about 1.10% on average for seven sequences.

In this paper, we propose an improved Largest coding Unit (LCU) level rate control algorithm for the 3d video coding extension of the high efficiency video coding (3d-HEVC). In the proposed algorithm, bit allocation for extended views is investigated in combination with temporal and inter-view Mean Absolute difference (MAd) predictions. Upon prediction weights generated by MAd prediction errors, accurate bitrate for LCU can be obtained. Then, a weight-based R-lambda, model is designed based on the prediction weights by improving the model parameters consistent with video content. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve better rate distortion performance and bitrate accuracy in comparison with the R4, model based rate control benchmark algorithm in HTM.

Representation of 3d video using reference image and depth map sequences (2d+depth) has become standard. Although standards recommend separate encoding of image and depth, exploitation of their correlation opens up opportunities, especially for low-bit-rate applications. To this end, a common motion vector is sometimes used to compensate both the sequences. In this context, we propose a parametric method for estimation of common motion that improves upon the current image-based approach. Specifically, we identify statistical redundancy between image and depth sequences, demonstrate how the said redundancy cannot fully be exploited by a technique based on image sequences alone, and then propose a method to remove such redundancy in an optimized manner. Finally, we demonstrate the efficacy of our technique using well-known stereoscopic video sequences.

In multi-view video plus depth (MVd) coding based free viewpoint video applications, a few reference viewpoints' texture and depth videos should be compressed and transmitted at the server side. At the terminal side, the display view videos could be the decoded reference view videos or the virtual viewpoints' videos which are synthesized by dIBR technology. The entire video quality of all display views are decided by the number of reference viewpoints and the compression distortion of each reference viewpoint's texture and depth videos. This paper studies the impact of the reference viewpoints selection on the entire video quality of all display views. The results show that depending on the available network bandwidth, the MVd coding requires different selections of reference viewpoints to maximize the entire video quality of all display views.

In this paper, various motion vector predictors are analyzed and their selection method is proposed for 3d video coding. In a ubiquitous multimedia system, video compression has been expected to be an important element since an available bandwidth is very limited. In the proposed method, several motion vector predictors are competed each other with the slightly modified rate-distortion criterion. Spatial, temporal, and inter-view predictors are considered as motion vector predictors to reduce spatial, temporal, and inter-view redundancies, respectively. The proposed method increases the motion vector coding efficiency by selecting the best motion vector predictor among them. Accordingly, overall bitrates are reduced by 5.2 % in average, up to 6.1 % compared to reference software JMVC 6.0 in terms of the Bjontegaard Metric.

In 3d video coding and depth-based image rendering, the distortion of the compressed depth image often leads to wrong 3d warpping. In this paper, by generalizing the recent work of convolutional neural network (CNN)-based depth image up-sampling, we propose a CNN-based depth image artifact removal scheme, where both the compressed depth and color images are used to enhance the depth accuracy. The proposed CNN has two sub-networks: joint depth-color sub-network and joint depth sub-network. during the depth and color feature extraction, the gradient of the depth image is used as the input to color image, while the gradient of color image is used as the input of depth feature extraction. Such an exchange of gradient information improves the learned features. Experimental results in terms of both objective and subjective quality of the depth and color images verify the efficiency of the proposed method.

An important question in the design of interactive multiview systems consists in determining the information needed by the decoder for high quality navigation between the views. Most of the existing techniques focus on the captured sequences and only consider their transmission, which does not guarantee consistency among receiver-generated frames of chosen virtual views. In this work, we propose a solution that additional transmits auxiliary information in order to help the construction of synthesized views, especially in the occluded areas. Comparative results with existing approaches validate this novel representation of multiview data for interactive navigation. We show that decoding quality and consistency among frames are improved with only a small share of additional information.

Since advanced 3d video systems employ depth information to support free-viewpoint navigation and comfortable 3d video viewing, efficient depth map coding is necessary for future 3d video systems. Most residual data in depth map coding are generated along abrupt depth discontinuities, represented by near-zero and high-magnitude values. In this paper, we model the residual data with two representative values calculated by the K-means clustering method and send them to the decoder by skipping transformation. After best mode decision, we applied the proposed method to a block containing residual data, and then we send the quantized representative values to decoder if its coding rate is less than the conventional best mode. By conducting INTRA only coding, -20.32% bit saving was achieved.

This paper describes our experience making a short stereoscopic movie visualizing the development of structure in the universe during the 13.7 billion years from the Big Bang to the present day. Aimed at a general audience for the Royal Society's 2005 Summer Science Exhibition, the movie illustrates how the latest cosmological theories based on dark matter and dark energy are capable of producing structures as complex as spiral galaxies and allows the viewer to directly compare observations from the real universe with theoretical results. 3d is an inherent feature of the cosmology data sets and stereoscopic visualization provides a natural way to present the images to the viewer, in addition to allowing researchers to visualize these vast, complex data sets. The presentation of the movie used passive, linearly polarized projection onto a 2m wide screen but it was also required to playback on a Sharp Rd3d display and in anaglyph projection at venues without dedicated stereoscopic display equipment. Additionally lenticular prints were made from key images in the movie. We discuss the following technical challenges during the stereoscopic production process;1) Controlling the depth presentation, 2) Editing the stereoscopic sequences, 3) Generating compressed movies in display specific formats. We conclude that the generation of high quality stereoscopic movie content using desktop tools and equipment is feasible. This does require careful quality control and manual intervention but we believe these overheads are worthwhile when presenting inherently 3d data as the result is significantly increased impact and better understanding of complex 3d scenes.
