drones are increasingly being used in construction for various applications. However, this integration has increased interactions between drones and workers, posing significant safety challenges for workers. This paper assessed the physical risks of drones on construction sites using VR-based4d simulations. Roofs, ladders, and scaffolds were identified as the top high-risk environments where workers were at an increased risk of accidents when working arounddrones. A system-level virtual simulation environment was developed to run 2700 simulations per scenario with varying parameters, mimicking and visualizing potential interactions between workers, structures, equipment, anddrones flying at different distances of workers: Near-drone (<4 ft) anddistant-drone (>4 ft). The results suggest that the distant-drone had a higher frequency of collision incidents with equipment and the ground, while the Near-drone had a higher frequency of collision incidents with buildings and workers. This differential impact of flight parameters and interaction distance on drone collisions implied the need for targeted safety strategies for different working contexts.

This research explores the points of view of practitioners regarding the challenges associated with 4d BIM in Quebec. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected, through an online survey and interviews with various professionals, to understand the current challenges associated with the use of 4d simulation in the construction industry. The importance of certain challenges, from the perspectives of different professionals, are determined, particularly in terms of organization and contracts, IT infrastructures and software, and staff training. The results proposed a new perspective based on the opinions of professionals in the construction industry in Quebec regarding the issues surrounding 4d simulation.

The AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) industry is gradually shifting away from 2d CAddrawings and toward Building Information Modeling as a result of the fast development of science and technology (BIM). The BIM idea’s introduction emphasizes the need to specify a building in a single building model with adequate information to suit its different needs rather than defining it in fragmenteddocuments. This research work aims to use the BIM 4d for the simulation of the construction sequence of a Swivel Bridge. For that, the software Revit was used to make the 3d model of the bridge, and the software Navisworks was used for the 4d construction simulation of the project. The results demonstrated that BIM technology could help reduce delays and problems with the schedule and improve communication among stakeholders, and BIM visualization andsimulation features were very useful compared to traditional planning methods.

Heavy industrial construction, particularly when modularization is adopted, requires thorough heavy-lift studies to manage the extensive use of mobile cranes in congested anddynamic site layouts. This study introduces an integrated4d crane simulation and onsite operation management framework for multiple concurrent mobile crane operations in the BIM environment with the support of a comprehensive database. Unlike similar recent efforts, the proposed framework is built upon previously developed crane planning and optimization systems, which enables generating accurate operation plans both in micro (objects) and macro scales (site). This framework addresses five different components regarding onsite crane operation management, including BIMbased multi-crane lift animation, scheduling and cost analyses, motion controlling in the BIM environment, safety monitoring and clash detection, and spatiotemporal site analyses. The developed framework's functionality is validated by implementing it into a portion of a real project in Alberta, Canada, through three different cases.

4d modeling has been an applied research area for around two decades since the first seminal works in the nineties. In the last years, a number of case studies have been published both for demonstrating the various applications of 4d and for assessing technological propositions. However, in most papers only little place is given to the particular content of 4d models. In parallel, following the growing implementation of Building Information Modeling, 4d modeling process is usually recognized as a "BIM use". In BIM implementations and protocols, the Level Of development of datasets is a fundamental issue. This paper describes the application of two distinct "4d uses" conducted on a single pilot project. They aim to assess the levels of graphical and temporal details required for the implemented uses. The authors finally discuss the diversity of 4d uses with 4d models, both planned or ad-hoc, as well as the logical understanding related to 4d LOd. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

The work presented in this paper is part of a more comprehensive one which aims to propose appropriate natural user interactions to support collaborative decision making in synchronous 4d simulation. It presents the issue and previous works on natural user interfaces in 4d simulation. It also introduces a first prototype and a 4d case study from a real construction site.

This paper discusses the challenge of using 3d models createdduring the design stage in the construction stage due to the need for segmentation or remodeling to incorporate activity concepts. To address this challenge, the paper proposes a methodology that uses the PointNet deep learning technique to automatically classify and segment design model elements into activity units for the construction stage while preserving attribute information. The authors introduce a module that utilize the bounding box concept to simplify the segmentation process after importing the 3d model into the 4d system used in the construction stage. This eliminates the need for separate CAd software and allows for direct segmentation into activity units within the 4d system and simultaneous simulation. The proposed methodology was applied to two real bridge projects anddemonstrated increased 3d model reusability in the construction stage. The paper concludes that this approach can improve the usability of 3d models for construction projects.

This article is part of the first steps of a more global work in progress. It aims at automating the integration of 4d simulations in virtual reality environments, to easily generate 4d simulation alternatives in such environments. The final goal is to support collaborative constructability analysis sessions based on intuitive simulations of the construction process using BIM models. The results show that while it is possible to create 4d models in a game engine directly from a BIM model and an existing schedule, several improvements still need to be made in order to achieve the desired situation. Similar to most workflows presented in the literature, the one used in this work is not free of limitations. The evaluation of the application shows that most of the problems encountered come from the imperfect transfer of the model from the BIM software to the game engine.

4d simulation based on immersive Virtual Reality-based collaboration can be a great help in constructability studies and in detecting spatiotemporal interference. Recent publications propose some methods and frameworks to support collaboration centered on 4d BIM models in Virtual Reality (VR) environments. However, the existing VR systems and platforms remains poorly suited to the task of integrating the data libraries generally conveyed by 4d models. In the context of the multiplication of platforms and the increased need for interoperability, it will be essential to develop interoperable solutions, based on OpenBIM formats. However, to date, there is no framework based on open interoperable formats to guide experts and users through the steps necessary for effective VR-based4d simulation. This work proposes a new method to improve the integration of 4d simulations in virtual reality environments. The method is centered on the use of OpenBIM standards, uses a normalized and structured workflow on three main phases that correspond to different work environments, and considers a two-way data exchange mechanism. In order to evaluate and validate the proposed method, a prototype was developed, adopting the same workflow and using a suitable software ecosystem.
