The availability of hourly wind speed data is becoming increasingly important for ensuring the proper design of wind energy conversion systems. For many sites, measured series of such high resolution are incomplete or entirely lacking;hence the need for a model for synthesizing wind speed data. The objective of this paper is to construct a model for synthetically generating hourly wind speed data, adopting a physical-statistical approach. This generation model defines four parameters for characterizing the wind speed time series in terms of probability distribution and autocorrelation functions. As opposed to the numerous methodologies reported in literature, the proposed approach can be adapted to a different number and type of available input data. Model validation has been carried out by examining two Italian sites, having different characteristics in terms of mean monthly wind speeds and autocorrelation function. To demonstrate its flexibility, in both sites wind speed time series have been synthesized for three different cases, increasing the amount of known input data. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. In modern buildings, the position(s) of elevator system(s) tends to be a crucial factor for the unimpeded vertical and on-floor circulation of their residents. The present paper introduces a method that correlates circulation data for the population of a typical office building (size, density and possibility for elevator use) with structural and architectural data of each one of its floors (net usable space, circulation space, structural intrusions, etc.). The method provides an optimum position for the elevator system hoistway(s) so that all walking distances on all floors between the elevator system and usable spaces are as small as possible. Every single floor of the building is partitioned into cells that form a grid covering its surface. An index of the intensity of elevator utilization (EUII) is introduced, defined as a function of the data mentioned above. Then, Euclidean norms, based on (EUII) values, provide weighted mean distances for locating the point on the vertical projection of the building that corresponds to the minimal mean distance from every cell of its usable spaces. A case study of a typical office building served by a single elevator system exemplifies the proposed approach, initially for a single floor and then for all the floors of the building.

The adaptive optics system (AO) without a wavefront sensor produces an alternative tool to correct the aberrations where the wavefront distortions are hard to be measured directly. This kind of adaptive optics system optimizes an evaluation parameter directly relevant to the wavefront quality to achieve the wavefront correction, and thea* optimization algorithms determines the efficiency of wavefront sensor-less AO system. In this paper, several frequently-used algorithms covering hill climbing algorithm, genetic algorithm, simulated annealing algorithm and two hybrid algorithms, known as hybrid genetic-hill climbing algorithm and hybrid simulated annealing-hill climbing algorithm (SAHC), have been investigated to improve the correction efficiency. The correction speeds and correction effects of the five kinds of algorithms have been compared in simulations and experiments for an adaptive optics system with 19-elements unimorph deformable mirror. The results show that hill climbing algorithm has the fastest correction speed, but suffered from the local optimum problem. The other four kinds of algorithms can get good correction results and have similar correction effects. Considering the correction effect and correction speed comprehensively, SAHC is the most efficienta* optimization algorithm in the five kinds ofa* optimization algorithms.

This 4th workshop on Computational optimization, Modelling and Simulation (COMS 2013) at ICCS 2013 will further summarize the latest developments of optimization and modelling and their applications in science, engineering and industry. Ana* optimization algorithm based on artificial life algorithm and particle swarm optimization (PSO) is proposed. The optimization includes two stages. In the first stage, artificial life system is created. As artificial life organisms have a sensing system, they can find the resource they want and metabolize it. The micro-interaction with each other in the artificial life's group results in emergent colonization in the whole system. The emergent colonization of artificial life system is used to provide an excellent initial position for PSO, and PSO is further used to rind the optimal solution in the second stage. Compared with ordinary artificial life based optimization approach and ordinary PSO approach by simulation, in the newly designed method, the performances of searching speed and optimization solution accuracy are improved.

The research study proposes to examine a three-dimensional visualization program, emphasizing on improving genetic algorithms through the optimization of a layout design-based standard and discrete shipbuilding workshop. By utilizing a steel processing workshop as an example, the principle of minimum logistic costs will be implemented to obtain an ideological equipment layout, and a mathematical model. The objectiveness is to minimize the total necessary distance traveled between machines. An improved control operator is implemented to improve the iterative efficiency of the genetic algorithm, and yield relevant parameters. The Computer Aided Tri-Dimensional Interface Application (CATIA) software is applied to establish the manufacturing resource base and parametric model of the steel processing workshop. Based on the results of optimized planar logistics, a visual parametric model of the steel processing workshop is constructed, and qualitative and quantitative adjustments then are applied to the model. The method for evaluating the results of the layout is subsequently established through the utilization of AHP. In order to provide a mode of reference to the optimization and layout of the digitalized production workshop, the optimized discrete production workshop will possess a certain level of practical significance.

In this paper, the social behaviors of fish swarm were classified in four ways: foraging behavior, stray behavior, reproductive behavior, and escaping behavior. Inspired by this, a novel artificial fish swarm algorithm (NAFSA) was proposed, which integrated the merits of the self-adaptation strategy, mutation strategy and hybrid strategy into the social behaviors of fish swarm. In the case of mutation strategy, the cloud theory was introduced into the escaping behavior, and the basic cloud generator was used as the mutation operator because of the properties of randomness and stable tendency of a normal cloud model. For the hybrid strategy, the selection, crossover and mutation operator in evolutionary algorithm were applied to define the reproductive ability of an artificial fish. Furthermore, the parameters of Step and Visual were developed in forms of hyperbolic tangent function to adjust the optimize performance dynamically during iterations process. Finally, ten standard test functions are used as the benchmark to validate the effectiveness of the NAFSA. Experimental results confirmed the superiority of NAFSA in terms of both solution quality and convergence speed.
