Existing issues in terms of female equality in ai and robotics are discussed in terms of strategies used in the EU funded Gender Innovation Living Lab (GILL) project to fix the number, the knowledge, institutions, and culture. These issues were investigated during a staff /student mobility exchange visit between Coventry University (UK) and 5 representative universities in Pakistan in 2023, with results confirming the literature. From this a set of recommendations is proposed to address acknowledged gender issues.

A robot motion skills method with explicit environmental constraints

PurposeThis paper aims to solve the problem of the inability to apply learning methods for robot motion skills based on dynamic movement primitives (DMPs) in tasks with explicit environmental constraints, while ensuring the reliability of the robot ***/methodology/approachThe authors propose a novel DMP that takes into account environmental constraints to enhance the generality of the robot motion skill learning method. First, based on the real-time state of the robot and environmental constraints, the task space is divided into different regions and different control strategies are used in each region. Second, to ensure the effectiveness of the generalized skills (trajectories), the control barrier function is extended to DMP to enforce constraint conditions. Finally, a skill modeling and learning algorithm flow is proposed that takes into account environmental constraints within *** designing numerical simulation and prototype demonstration experiments to study skill learning and generalization under constrained environments. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is capable of generating motion skills that satisfy environmental constraints. It ensures that robots remain in a safe position throughout the execution of generation skills, thereby avoiding any adverse impact on the surrounding ***/valueThis paper explores further applications of generalized motion skill learning methods on robots, enhancing the efficiency of robot operations in constrained environments, particularly in non-point-constrained environments. The improved methods are applicable to different types of robots.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to analyze the robot trends of the next ***/methodology/approach This paper is divided into two sections: the key modern technology on which Europe's robotics industry has built its foundation is described. Then, the next key megatrends were *** Artificial intelligence (ai) and robotics are technologies of major importance for the development of humanity. This time is mature for the evolution of industrial and service robots. The perception of robot use has changed from threading to aiding. The cost of mass production of technological devices is decreasing, while a rich set of enabling technologies is under development. Soft mechanisms, 5G and ai have enabled us to address a wide range of new problems. Ethics should guide human behavior in addressing this newly available powerful technology in the right ***/value The paper describes the impact of new technology, such as ai and soft robotics. The world of work must react quickly to these epochal changes to enjoy their full benefits.

A multi-purpose robot perception system enabling closed-loop control for zero defect manufacturing in gluing processes of large parts

Significant progress has been made in robot perception facilitating the deployment of advanced automation across a wide range of applications however typically little solutions are presented for large parts manufacturing. This paper presents a versatile robot perception system designed to enhance the flexibility and precision of robotic adhesive dispensing processes. This solution is capable of addressing the unique challenges of implementing automation solutions in large parts manufacturing, such as flexibility to manufacture small lot sizes, perception for complex task sequences, and handling parts with large dimensions that cannot be captured in single camera frames. A solution based on one single vision sensor is presented for part type recognition, part localization, process monitoring, and quality inspection. This includes algorithms for these perception functionalities and a closed-loop control framework aimed at zero-defect manufacturing. The task planning and execution architecture is based on Behavior Trees to allow modular and scalable robot task modeling and execution, whereas a knowledge database updated with process monitoring results via a module named event manager serves to prevent the propagation of defects to the following production steps. The proposed approach was tested and validated in a robotic cell for glue dispensing for a case study inspired by the bus and coach sector. The results indicate that the system can tolerate position uncertainties and random parts feeding, address disruptions in-process or trigger corrective actions post-process, and easily accommodate new variants.

Drawing on Person Job Fit and Person Organization theories, the present study aims to investigate the association between employee smart technology and ai competencies and turnover intention via the mediation of intention to use smart technologies. Furthermore, the moderation effect of perceived alternative employment opportunities (PAEO) was explored on the relationship between the intention to use technology and turnover intention. Data were collected from 547 hotel employees in the United States of America via Amazon’s MTurk and analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results indicate that employee smart technology and ai competencies was not found to be significantly associated with employee turnover intention. However, the results from the mediation analysis showed that employee smart technology and ai competencies was positively and significantly associated with turnover intention through intention to use (ITU). The moderation analysis further confirmed that the positive relationship between ITU and TOI was enhanced when the perceived level of PAEO is high. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed.

Purpose: This paper aims to explore how artificial intelligence (ai) technologies have redefined the hospitality industry. It develops a theoretical framework to evaluate its impact on employee engagement, retention and productivity levels, stemming from its potential implications for service quality and customer satisfaction. Design/methodology/approach: Based on the exploration of relevant literature, role theory and service-profit chain were used to develop – role-service-profit chain. Findings: Role-service-profit chain is an analytical tool which has strong implications for investment and deployment analysis of the new technologies in hospitality and tourism businesses. It proposes how managers can evaluate how the role expectation of technological innovations relate to service quality and customer satisfaction through its impact on employee-related outcomes (such as employee engagement, retention and productivity), and assess the corresponding impact on profitability and growth, in the context of their own unique internal environment and position in the market. Research limitations/implications: Although an empirical assessment of the hypothesised relationships in the model is required to evaluate and validate it in the hospitality industry, role-service-profit chain presents promising implications for tourism and hospitality practice and future research. Practical implications: Role-service-profit chain is an analytical tool from which managers can make improvements on talent and talent management practices and adjust expectations and behaviours in ways that facilitate improvements in service quality and customer satisfaction. Robot learning of manipulation activities with overall planning through precedence graph

One critical aspect of robotic visual learning is to capture the precedence relations among primitive actions from observing human performing manipulation activities. Current state-of-the-art spatial temporal representations do not fully capture the precedence relations. In this paper, we present a novel activity representation: Manipulation Precedence Graph (MPG) and its associated overall planning module, with the goal to enable robot to learn manipulation activities from human demonstrations with overall planning. Experiments conducted on three publicly available manipulation activity video corpora as well as on a simulation platform validate that (1) the generated MPG from our system is robust given noisy detections from perception modules;(2) the overall planning module is able to generate parallel action sequences for robot to execute them in parallel;(3) the overall system improves robots' manipulation execution efficiency. Dynamics of Perceptible Agency: The Case of Social Robots

How do we perceive the agency of others? Do the same rules apply when interacting with others who are radically different from ourselves, like other species or robots? We typically perceive other people and animals through their embodied behavior, as they dynamically engage various aspects of their affordance field. In second personal perception we also perceive social or interactional affordances of others. I discuss various aspects of perceptible agency, which might begin to give us some tools to understand interactions also with agents truly other than ourselves or ``perhaps agents'' like present and future social robots. Robots have various kinds of physical and behavioral presence and thus make their agency-if we want to call it that-perceptible in ways that computers and other forms of ai do not. The largely dualist assumptions pertaining to the hidden bodies of traditional Turing tests are discussed, as well as the social affordance effects of such indirect interactions as opposed to interactions in physically shared space. The question is what role various abilities to reveal, hide and dynamically control the body and broader behavior plays in heterogeneous tech or machine mediated interactions. I argue that the specifics and richness of perceptible agency matters to the kind of reciprocity we can obtain.
