We present an api for adaptive subdivision schemes which is generic in the sense that it allows to define a composite subdivision operator as a sequence of atomic splitting and averaging rules. The api encapsulates a mesh data structure enhanced by additional temporary information which is necessary to enable the refinement of mesh faces in random order while keeping the mesh structure consistent and avoiding redundant computations. The growing number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices gives a great impact on every aspect of our daily lives. To increase interoperability of such devices, they are often equipped with RESTful api. To encourage developers to utilize devices by developing innovative applications, those apis are open to the public. However, integrating IoT devices as a whole system is challenging because of the lack of api standardization. Each manufacturer defines their own api for their products. Moreover, the traditional RESTful style, which is designed based on a resource-oriented paradigm, lacks in functionality description. Consequently, application development cost increases, which obstructs innovative applications to emerge. In this paper, we present an alternative approach for api standardization, which can realize open services in smart buildings. To deal with a wide variety of devices, we design each device api to have two endpoints: attribute and state, based on device abstraction. To support developers, we provide functionality descriptions by investigating the useful information in application development and include it into attribute endpoint. To evaluate the proposed design, we implemented Smart Building api in the real building environment and developed a Smart Room Application as a use case. The comparison of the development process by using traditional RESTful style and the proposed design is analyzed. The results showed that the proposed api design succeeded in reducing the development cost and supported the developers to create application more easily.

In this paper we present a case study of applying fitness dimensions in api design assessment. We argue that api assessment is company specific and should take into consideration various stakeholders in the api ecosystem. We identified new fitness dimensions and introduced the notion of design considerations for fitness dimensions such as priorities, tradeoffs, and technical versus cognitive classification.

apis are becoming the fundamental building block of modem software and their usability is crucial to programming efficiency and software quality. Yet api designers find it hard to gather and interpret user feedback on their apis. To close the gap, we interviewed 23 api designers from 6 companies and 11 open-source projects to understand their practices and needs. The primary way of gathering user feedback is through bug reports and peer reviews, as formal usability testing is prohibitively expensive to conduct in practice. Participants expressed a strong desire to gather real-world use cases and understand users' mental models, but there was a lack of tool support for such needs. In particular, participants were curious about where users got stuck, their workarounds, common mistakes, and unanticipated comer cases. We highlight several opportunities to address those unmet needs, including developing new mechanisms that systematically elicit users' mental models, building mining frameworks that identify recurring patterns beyond shallow statistics about api usage, and exploring alternative design choices made in similar libraries.

This study uses mixed methods to evaluate api design methods, focusing on design and consumption phases. Our goal was to understand the impact of api governance approaches on productivity and usability. A controlled developer experiment (n=34) demonstrated a 10% increased requirement fulfillment using api Improvement Proposals (AIPs) and linter versus no protocols. Meanwhile, 73% of 33 surveyed api consumers preferred AIP-aligned designs for enhanced usability and comprehensibility. Complementing this, a custom large language model called the api Architect received average expert ratings of just 5/10 for specification quality, revealing gaps versus manual design. The quantitative performance metrics combined with qualitative user feedback provide evidence from multiple angles that strategically integrating industry best practices with maturing AI capabilities can meaningfully improve api design outcomes. This research offers empirical insights from developer and consumer perspectives to advance scholarly discourse and industry practice regarding optimal api design workflows.

REST apis expose web services to clients. Although experts have recommended guidelines for REST api design, there is little empirical evidence regarding the relationship between adherence to guidelines and benefits to api consumers. We interviewed ten REST api designers to understand what practices REST api designers follow, what opinions they have of existing guidelines, and what challenges they face when designing and using apis. Some guidelines were widely followed, and some were rejected as being inconsistent with good practice. The participants reported additional challenges: authentication and authorization are too hard to implement;specifications and documentation are frequently missing, vague, or outdated;and standard error reporting methods are insufficient for end users and for debugging purposes. Overall, our observations present opportunities for tool developers to significantly improve the situation by assessing and assuring conformance with guidelines;by aligning documentation with specifications and implementations;and by standardizing guidelines for api design.

Microservice Architecture (MSA) is a standard for solving the technical challenges of distributed software systems. design methodologies assist in making decisions about the functionality encapsulated by each microservice in a system. Despite the documentation supporting microservice design, challenges remain in defining microservice boundaries and concise apis exposing business capacities of the modern distributed, data-intensive, microservice-based system. api-First design is an emerging methodology for enterprise system design. Its primary principle suggests that software design focus on well-defined apis as its foundation. In its infancy, research, documentation, and tools that assist in adopting an api-First design approach are minimal. The project discussed in this paper provides the research community with a set of practitioner-defined features and a prototype for an application intended to help promote the adoption of api-First design via an api-Driven UI design and code generation application.

Microservice apis are often identified and designed based on Domain-Driven design (DDD). To help in the continuous analysis of mappings of domain model elements to apis and api endpoints, we aim to automate the assessment of conformance to Architectural design Decision (ADD) options. The ADDs, their decision options, and relevant decision drivers studied in this paper originate from an empirical study on the mapping of domain model elements to apis and api endpoints in practice. We propose automated detectors to detect the decision options of the ADDs taken in a given microservice api model, and an assessment scoring scheme based on the empirical knowledge codified in the ADDs. We evaluate our work, by first manually creating a ground truth for 14 cases in a multi-case study, and then comparing the results of our automated detectors to the ground truth for each of the 14 cases. In the cases we were able to identify 86% of the decision points correctly, and a statistical analysis of our data shows only a negligible effect size for differences to the ground truth.

keeping in mind the widespread usage of Android/Windows devices and commercialization of IoT based systems;there is urgent need for Android/Windows devices to coordinate with IoT devices. This coordination may involve configuration and control of IoT devices/controllers from Android/Windows devices. We design, develop and test an SNMP/MIB based control api for IoT devices that enables Android and Windows machines to manage SNMP enabled IoT devices remotely via network. It is a client/manager design that uses SNMP protocol to operate on management information bases of any managed device and multiple client devices can register themselves with the manager. For testing purpose, client runs on Android device and manager can run on both Android and Windows device. We test this api in both LAN and WAN setting and report various parameters including round trip time, trap delay and device internal delay time for both getting and setting MIB values. This delay computation is very important for time critical applications of IoT.
