Cryptography is considered by many users to be a complicated subject. An architecture for a cryptographic application programming interface simplifies customer use of cryptographic services by helping to ensure compliance with national and international standards and by providing intuitive high-level services that may be implemented on a broad range of operating systems and underlying hardware. This paper gives an overview of the design rationale of the recently announced Common Cryptographic Architecture Cryptographic application programming Interface and gives typical application scenarios showing methods of using the services described in the architecture to meet security requirements.

A modular framework for the development of medical applications that promotes deterministic, robust and correct code is presented. The system is based on the portable Gambit Scheme programming language and provides a flexible cross-platform environment for developing graphical applications on mobile devices as well as medical instrumentation interfaces running on embedded platforms. Real world applications of this framework for mobile diagnostics, telemonitoring and automated drug infusions are reported. The source code for the core framework is open source and available at: https://***/part-cw/lambdanative.

The programming system (TTPS) described in this thesis is based on tree transformatioc techniques, commonly known as abstract transformation. The objects manipulated by the user through "TTPS" are: the templates, the transformation rules, and the programs. The templates define the syntactic and semantic language framework which will be used to parse and unparse both the rules and the program trees. The rules define the semantic behavior of the transformation process. The program represents the source tree which describes the problem to solve, and will be interpreted by a successive application of the supplied rules until they no longer apply. "TTPS" provides an appropriate environment for a large class of applications (e. g. system programming, code genera- tion, structure transformation, simulation of syntax directed editors, and other conventional applications), and supports many programming styles such as functional program- ming, conventional programming, and user defined style.

The use of IP (Internet protocol) technology in the information and communications industry constitutes a major global trend. A highly efficient service architecture, enabling technologies and advanced applications are essential to rapid multimedia services in an all-IPv6 network environment. This work presents an all-IPv6 service platform based on open service architecture (OSA) to support a set of standard interfaces and applications. The all-IPv6 network environment was integrated using a network-processor-based IPv4/IPv6 translator and a mobile router (MR) supported IPv6 network mobility. The feasibility of the open service platform for all-IPv6 network environments and of the designed application programming interfaces was examined using three applications: e-commerce, video-on-demand, and on-line gaming. The performance analysis indicates that the system throughput increased from 10.5 to 60.5 Mb/s as the number of users increased from 1 to 80;the mean response time increased from approximately 1 to 10.5 ins, and the delay time increased from 0.1 to 1 ms.

An object model for application development is introduced in the context of Engineering Information Systems (EIS) 1. The model shares features with several popular models and offers some less common ideas. such as operation-dependent state closure. The model is also unique in its position within the environment: it acts as a portability view independent of the underlying storage servers. The view-mapping is made most efficient however, if the object model of the underlying servers matches the structure of the EIS application Object Model (AOM).

The computer-aided fabrication environment (CAFE) is a software system being developed at MIT for use in the manufacture of integrated circuits. CAFE is intended to be used in all phases of process design, development, planning, and manufacturing of integrated circuit wafers. While still under active development, CAFE presently provides day-to-day support to research and production facilities at MIT with both standard and flexible product lines. CAFE provides a platform for work in several active research areas at MIT, including "technology" (process and device) computer-aided design (TCAD), process modeling, manufacturing quality control, and TCAD tool integration. The CAFE architectural framework supports a wide variety of software modules, including both development tools and on-line applications. The key components of the CAFE architecture are the data model and data base schema, the process flow and wafer representations, the user interface, and the application programming and data base interfaces. All CAFE application modules store and retrieve persistent data through a common data base interface layer. Interface "wrappers" provide seamless, transparent integration of external tools and packages which have their own internal data formats.

This paper describes the development of a Knowledge Base (KB) as a software component to support design of Distributed Spacecraft Missions (DSMs) using the Trade-space Analysis Tool for Constellations (TAT-C). The KB provides a human- and machine-readable store of information with associated semantic meta-data and an application programming interface to access this data across multiple TAT-C components. Semantic web technologies, especially ontology, facilitate organization and querying of data products. Basic Formal Ontology and Common Core Ontologies are used as upper-level ontologies. Extending from an upper level ontology increases the ease of comparing information across domains. Formal ontology also allows for modeling measurements in different units, indicating data provenance and inferring new information based on existing connections.
