The enterprise architecture presents a view of how software utilities and applications are related to one another under unifying rules and principles of development. By constructing an enterprise architecture, an organization will be able to manage the components of its systems within a solid conceptual framework. This largely prevents duplication of effort, focuses the organization on its core technical competencies, and ultimately makes software more maintainable. In the beginning of 2003, several prominent challenges faced software development at the GBT. The telescope was not easily configurable, and observing often presented a challenge, particularly to new users. High priority projects required new experimental developments on short time scales. Migration paths were required for applications which had proven difficult to maintain. In order to solve these challenges, an enterprise architecture was created which includes five layers: 1) the telescope control system, and the raw data produced during an observation, 2) Low-level application programming interfaces (APIs) in C++, for managing interactions with the telescope control system and its data, 3) High-Level APIs in Python, which can be used by astronomers or software developers to create custom applications, 4) application Components in Python, which can be either standalone applications or plug-in modules to applications, and 5) application Management Systems in Python, which package application components for use by a particular user group (astronomers, engineers or operators) in terms of resource configurations. This presentation describes how these layers combine to make the GBT easier to use, while concurrently making the software easier to develop and maintain.

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are complex systems that require expertise from multiple domains in their design, implementation, and validation. One cost-effective technique for validation of CPS is the integration of two or more domain-specific simulators into a joint simulation called a co-simulation. Standards such as the High Level Architecture (HLA) have been developed in part to simplify the co-simulation development process. However, CPS co-simulation still requires significant expertise, especially when the goal is the integration of a new domain-specific tool or simulator. The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has released a software platform called the Universal CPS Environment for Federation (UCEF) to simplify the development of CPS co-simulations. UCEF provides two approaches to integrate tools and simulators. The first approach is a Java library called the UCEF Gateway that limits the development effort to a list of callback functions in a well-defined simulation life cycle. The second approach is a Representational State Transfer (REST) server developed using the gateway for applications that can implement a Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)/Internet Protocol (IP) client. This paper describes how both approaches are implemented to expedite the integration of new domain-specific tools and simulators.

We present a novel physics-informed neural network modeling approach for bias estimation in corrosion-fatigue prognosis. The hybrid approach is designed to merge physics-informed and data-driven layers within deep neural networks. The result is a cumulative damage model in which the physics-informed layers are used to model the relatively well understood phenomenon (crack growth through Walker's model) and the data-driven layers account for the hard-to-model physics (i.e., bias in damage accumulation due to corrosion). A numerical experiment is used to present the main features of the proposed physics-informed neural network for damage accumulation. The test problem consists of predicting corrosion-fatigue of an Al 2024-T3 alloy used on panels of aircraft wing. Besides cyclic loading, the panels are also subjected to saline corrosion. The physics-informed neural network is trained using full observation of inputs (far-field loads, stress ratio and a corrosivity index - defined per airport) and very limited observation of outputs (crack length at inspection for only a small portion of the fleet). Results show that the physics-informed neural network is able to learn the correction in the original fatigue model due to corrosion and predictions are accurate enough for ranking damage in different airplanes in the fleet (which can be used to prioritizing inspection).

Fifth generation (5G) networks are expected to incorporate more intelligence in order to predict the traffic and mobility patterns and to optimize the performance. Multi-access-Edge Computing may contribute to performance optimization by distributing cloud computing and storage capabilities in the vicinity to end users. In this paper, we propose a new mobile edge service which enables external applications to provide information about foreseen or expected User Equipment (UE) activity and mobility. The applications may gather radio network and location information to calculate UE behavior patterns and to send to the network information that may help to optimize resource management procedures.

Computing power and molecular simulation methodology have improved dramatically over the past decade, and for some systems molecular models are reaching a point where they can provide information that approaches or surpasses the quality of real experimental data. Molecular simulation can also be a potent tool for developing qualitative understanding, and this feature suggests widespread use of molecular simulation as a tool for teaching. Broader use of molecular simulation for these purposes requires tools that promote understanding and application of simulation software. We present an "object-oriented" view of molecular simulation that can help conceptualize and organize its elements, and discuss software development tools that we have constructed that enable non-experts in simulation or graphical programming to create instructive molecular simulations. We finish with an example of one such simulation applet, which we have used in the classroom. Tools described here are available on the web at ***/etomica. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Polystore systems are a new trend in Database Management Systems, and they focus on storing and processing queries in multiple heterogeneous databases. Polystore systems have complex middleware that provides APIs for multiple types of storage engines. When database administrators use an API, they play the role of an application user and more attention should be paid to analyzing these APIs. This paper investigates the communicability of a Polystore system API (BigDAWG), with the SigniFYIng APIs method, from Semiotic Engineering. We analyze the potential of the method in the characterization of the communicative strategies of the BigDAWG system. The study is preceded by a simplified systematic mapping study in the area of semiotic inspection of APIs to characterize the main contributions. The results of this research indicate the applicability of the SigniFYIng APIs method to support investigations in the context of Human-Centered Computing and for the study of communicability in Polystore systems.

Multimodal audiovisual speech recognition architecture using a three-feature multi-fusion method for noise-robust systems

Exposure to varied noisy environments impairs the recognition performance of artificial intelligence-based speech recognition technologies. Degraded-performance services can be utilized as limited systems that assure good performance in certain environments, but impair the general quality of speech recognition services. This study introduces an audiovisual speech recognition (AVSR) model robust to various noise settings, mimicking human dialogue recognition elements. The model converts word embeddings and log-Mel spectrograms into feature vectors for audio recognition. A dense spatial-temporal convolutional neural network model extracts features from log-Mel spectrograms, transformed for visual-based recognition. This approach exhibits improved aural and visual recognition capabilities. We assess the signal-to-noise ratio in nine synthesized noise environments, with the proposed model exhibiting lower average error rates. The error rate for the AVSR model using a three-feature multi-fusion method is 1.711%, compared to the general 3.939% rate. This model is applicable in noise-affected environments owing to its enhanced stability and recognition rate.

Traffic Management Initiatives such as Ground Delay Programs and Ground Stops are implemented by traffic management personnel to control air traffic volume to constrained airports when traffic demand is projected to exceed the airports' acceptance rate due to conditions such as inclement weather, volume constraints, etc. Ground Delay Programs are issued for lengthy periods of time and aircraft are assigned departure times later than scheduled. Ground Stops on the other hand, are issued for short periods of time and aircraft are not permitted to land at the constrained airport. Occasionally, Ground Stops are issued during an ongoing Ground Delay Program, and vice versa, which hinders the efficient planning and implementation of these Traffic Management Initiatives. This research proposes a methodology to help stakeholders better capture the impact of the coincidence of weather related Ground Delay Programs and Ground Stops, and potentially help reduce the number and duration of such coincidences. This is achieved by leveraging Machine Learning techniques to predict their coincidence at a given hour, predict which Traffic Management Initiative would precede the other during their coincidence, and identify key predictors that cause their coincidence. The Random Forests Machine Learning algorithm was identified as the best suited algorithm for predicting the coincidence of weather-related Ground Delay Programs and Ground Stops, as well as the Traffic Management Initiative that would precede the other during their coincidence.

In distributed systems, remote application programming interfaces (APIs) let architectural components such as microservices communicate with each other;interoperability and satisfactory developer experience are key stakeholder concerns. In response to changing requirements and insights from development and operations, API endpoints and the request and response messages of the exposed operations are actively designed and then modified during the entire life cycle of the system. Refactoring is a crucial practice in agile software development, widely adopted in practice at the code level. Architectural refactoring has been researched but has not been adopted nearly as widely as code-level refactoring. This paper continues our work on refactoring remote APIs, which we introduced at EuroPLoP 2023. We present a second slice of seven API refactorings pulled from our online interface Refactoring Catalog, many of which target API design patterns: Extract Information Holder, Inline Information Holder, Extract Operation, Rename Operation, Make Request Conditional, Encapsulate Context Representation, and Introduce Version Identifier. Besides context, problem, and step-by-step solution, we also motivate the refactorings by stakeholder concerns and identify the design smells that refactoring can address. All refactorings are illustrated with implementation code snippets, excerpts from API specification, and/or examples of messages exchanged at runtime. The paper concludes with an outlook to future work.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has become critical to the design and analysis of aerospace vehicles. Parallel grid adaptation that resolves multiple scales with anisotropy is identified as one of the challenges in the CFD Vision 2030 Study to increase the capacity and capability of CFD simulation. The Study also cautions that computer architectures are undergoing a radical change and dramatic increases in algorithm concurrency will be required to exploit full performance. This paper reviews four different methods to parallel anisotropic grid generation. They cover both ends of the spectrum: (i) using existing state-of-the-art software optimized for a single core and modifying it for parallel platforms and (ii) designing and implementing scalable software with incomplete, but rapidly maturing functionality. A brief overview for each grid adaptation system is presented in the context of a telescopic approach for multilevel concurrency. These methods employ different approaches to enable parallel execution, which provides a unique opportunity to illustrate the relative behavior of each approach. Qualitative and quantitative metric evaluations are used to draw lessons for future developments in this critical area for parallel CFD simulation.
