Engineering-out hazards: digitising the management working safety in confined spaces

Purpose This paper aims to report upon the further development of a hybrid application programming interface (API) plug-in to building information modelling (BIM) entitled confined spaces safety monitoring system "CoSMoS". Originally designed to engineer-out environmental hazards associated with working in a building's confined spaces (during the construction phase of a building's life-cycle), this second generation version is expanded upon to use archival records to proactively learn from data generated within a sensor network during the building's operations and maintenance (O&M) phase of asset management (AM). Design/methodology/approach An applied research methodological approach adopted used a two-phase process. In phase one, a conceptual model was created to provide a "blueprint map" to integrate BIM, sensor-based networks and data analytics (DA) into one integral system. A literature review provided the basis for the conceptual model's further development. In phase two, the conceptual model was transposed into the prototype's development environment as a proof of concept using primary data accrued from a large educational building. Findings An amalgamation of BIM, historical sensor data accrued and the application of DA demonstrate that CoSMoS provides an opportunity for the facilities management (FM) team to monitor pertinent environmental conditions and human behaviour within buildings that may impact upon occupant/worker safety. Although working in confined spaces is used to demonstrate the inherent potential of CoSMoS, the system could readily be expanded to analyse sensor-based network's historical data of other areas of building performance, maintenance and safety. Originality/value This novel prototype has automated safety applications for FM during the asset lifecycle and maintenance phase of a building's O&M phase of AM. Segmentation and identification of a graphical user interface consist of detecting the location, dimensions, and arrangement of elements of the user interface, such as controls, labels, images, and icons, and recognizing them, respectively. While these problems have been already addressed for a graphical user interface stored in a file and processed offline, it has received less attention for online processing when the interface evolves and is expressed in different formats, such as a whiteboard drawing or a paper sketch. To overcome these limitations, we present VisionAPI, an application programming interface trained for segmenting and identifying elements of a hand-sketched graphical user interface both offline and online using computer vision. For this purpose, we rely on a software architecture based on Resnet101 to extract features and Faster R-CNN to build boundary boxes to obtain an 85% recognition rate for 21 classes of elements found in graphical user interfaces: paragraph, dropdown list, checkbox, radio button, rating, toggle button, text area, date picker, stepper input, slider, video, label, table, list, header, button, image, linebreak, container, link, and text input.

Adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) offers a practical solution to reduce the computational cost and memory requirement of numerical simulations that use computational meshes. In this work, we introduce a novel smart methodology for adaptive mesh refinement. Smart adaptive refinement blends classical AMR with machine learning to address some of the known issues of the conventional approaches. We provide an algorithm for adaptive refinement. Subsequently, we introduce a modular object-oriented structure for our smart AMR algorithm. Then we present procedures used for the training of a smart AMR model. The study follows with a demonstration of preliminary numerical studies indicating the feasibility of performing adaptive mesh refinement on a few demonstrative problems selected from the CFD domain. Finally, we conclude with a few comments about future work.

The core functionality of a network is packet processing. Fast Path is the functional area that handles processing of packets. The Fast Path functionalities is predominantly hardware driven and is very difficult to port on other platforms. This is because the APIs (application programming interfaces) used for developing fast path applications is system on chip specific. To enable the easy migration of fast path applications across hardware requires a harmonized API set. Open data Plane (ODP) is open source initiative in this direction. The Fast Path packet processing can be implemented using Open Data Plane (ODP) application programming interfaces (APIs) to achieve hardware or platform independence.

Background oriented schlieren images have historically been generated by calculating the observed pixel displacement between a wind-on and wind-off image pair using normalized cross-correlation. This work uses optical flow to solve the displacement fields which generate the schlieren images. A well established method used in the computer vision com- munity, optical flow is the apparent motion in an image sequence due to brightness changes. The regularization method of Horn and Schunck is used to create schlieren images using two data sets: a supersonic jet plume/shock interaction from the NASA Ames Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel, and a transonic fight test of a T-38 aircraft using a naturally occurring background, performed in conjunction with NASA Ames and Armstrong Research Centers. Results are presented and contrasted with those using normalized cross-correlation. The optical flow schlieren images are found to provided significantly more detail. We apply the method to an additional data set to demonstrate both the broad applicability and limitations of the technique. © 2017, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc. This study aims to provide a Cloud Computing (CC) proposed framework using application programming interface (API's) to deliver connectivity and interaction of Software as a Service (SaaS) in Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) system at higher education institute. The framework is adopted and implemented to enhance the existing VLE to meet the incremental increasing of users' needs and expectations. Different research's methodologies and techniques are used to measure the students and instructors satisfaction, and to measure the impact of the adoption of CC on business value for VLE as well. In addition, the study identifies and explores the idea of covering the gap between the advance of adopting CC as a new technology and the benefits of implementing cloud techniques in education. The findings of implementing the adopted framework equate the study expectations, where the user's satisfaction significantly increased compared with the existing system. The users found that the system performance and response to their tasks are improved. Meanwhile, the users found that the new adopted system make it easier for them to achieve their academic activities and goals. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. Thanks to recent advances in the fields of anisotropic grid adaptation, error estimation, and geometry modeling, a sketch-to-solution work flow is now possible for viscous computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations. With this workflow, a CFD application engineer provides geometry, boundary conditions, and flow parameters;and the sketch-to-solution process yields a CFD simulation through automatic, error-based, grid adaptation. To explore the benefits of this nascent capability, a conventional manual grid generation work flow is compared to this new automatic grid generation work flow for a given engineering question: What are the aerodynamic interactions caused by the reaction control system (RCS) on an entry vehicle? This case study indicates that while the automatic grid generation sketchto-solution process is not yet mature, it is preferred over a manual grid generation work flow because it greatly reduces manual labor, eliminates many opportunities for human error, and provides grid sensitivity information.

To enable desianers to construct geometric models of MEMS devices in a straightforward environment and get mask and process flow automatically, a 3D MEMS CAD system for surface micromachined devices is proposed based on traditional design software - SolidWorks. With application programming interfaces (APIs) of SolidWorks, component modules and databases of the system are developed with Visual Basic, such as geometric model design module, mask and process flow generation module, process simulation module. 3D feature database and material database. Their development method is discussed in this paper. A practical example shows that surface micromachined devices can be designed efficiently in the system without tedious fabrication process.

The growth in wireless communication and mobile devices has supported the development of distributed speech recognition (DSR) technology. During the last decade this has led to the establishment of ETSI-DSR standards and an increased interest in research aimed at systems exploiting DSR. So far, however, DSR-based systems executing on mobile devices are only in their infancy. One of the reasons is the lack of easy-to-use software development packages. This chapter presents a prototype version of a configurable DSR system for the development of speech enabled applications on mobile devices. The system is implemented on the basis of the ETSI-DSR advanced front-end and the SPHINX IV recognizer. A dedicated protocol is defined for the communication between the DSR client and the recognition server supporting simultaneous access from a number of clients. This makes it possible for different clients to create and configure recognition tasks on the basis of a set of predefined recognition modes.

An incremental tide in IoT devices prompts a centralized control system where physical controls such as buttons and knobs can become virtual and centralized via augmented reality: especially headset AR. I conduct a literature mapping to identify gaps and create a front-end based virtual control panel API tool to allow programmers and end-users to rapidly create headset augmented reality-based virtual control systems for physical devices. I probe on how an artificial intelligence back-end aids in such a system in terms of panel creation and automation as well as panel usage and control scenarios. I delve into use cases of the virtual control panel API including mass usage and specialized scenarios. Furthermore, I specify the guidelines for a requirements elicitation study for such a system along with potential points of derivation. Next, I probe into implications and limitations of such a system in terms of artificial intelligence, usage, and precision. My work has implications for programmers and users of a virtual control system backed by artificial intelligence for the purpose of controlling physical IoT devices in mass usage as well as in specialized scenarios.
