In classical IPOA, the communication of two users between local AsynchronousTransfer Mode (atm) ports needs a VCC, however, it is not an elegant solution to the atmaccessequipments design when the performance of the whole system is considered. Thus, we investigate theway to provide the improved IPOA protocol that uses switching way in local ports. And it is fullycompatible with the CIPOA by using the same protocol for ARP and IP forwarding. In addition, we alsopresent the design of one 10/100 Mbit/s auto adaptive IPOA client board with local switch abilityidea and CAM mechanism for our project.

Internetworking with IP networks is not only required for the acceptance of atm, it is also key to the success of atm in the next century. Some groups of IETF, ITU-T and atm Forum are working on such tasks. They have been done many useful solutions as the results. In this paper, we present a way to accommodate IP services in atm access networks, excluding additional equipment such as IP routers and avoiding functional addition and modification of atm backbone network elements. In particular, we introduce accommodation of IP services in centralized access node system (CANS) that is a multiservice access switch. CANS adopts RFC 1577 classical IP and ARP over atm as a solution for providing IP services. However, it requires that routers be used between different logical IP subnets (LISs). To overcome this limitation of classical IPOA, we propose an enhanced IPOA mechanism that is an extension of classical IPOA. The proposed mechanism not only is compatible with the classical version, but also provides direct communication capability.

This paper presents a flexible concept for a broadband subscriber accessnetwork which minimizes investment costs by predominantly using the existing network infrastructure. The target network may consist of either a coaxial tree-and-branch structure or symmetrical copper pairs to the subscriber, and is connected to the central head station with the aid of optical feeder lines which can be implemented or enhanced by a passive optical network (PON). In the event of an increase in bit rate requirements, the coaxial network can be expanded by dividing it into smaller, optically fed subnetworks or by supplementing it with optical overlay systems. Flexibility, expandability and low costs are achieved through the standard atm format implemented for the signals of all interactive services down to the network termination units on the subscriber side. Those signals are transmitted in the coaxial network in frequency bands above the CATV band in accordance with a multiple of the CATV channel width to ensure that the modulation and demodulation is implemented in a cost-efficient manner while providing 'bit rate on demand' for a suitably high number of subscribers. Separation of the network termination unit from the customer premises equipment enables a flexible, cost-efficient subscriber configuration to be selected, existing domestic wiring to be used and several completely different subscriber terminals to be simultaneously connected.
