Secure and efficient two-factor zero-knowledge authentication solution for access control systems

The authentication schemes based on common chip cards such as Mifare cards are still very popular and are used in various access control systems deployed in critical infrastructure sectors, universities, companies, libraries, hospitals, and other public and private institutions. On one hand, the access control systems based on these obsolete cards and cryptographic protocols have several security flaws and can be easily attacked. On the other hand, newer authentication schemes usually need many complex cryptographic operations and thus take impractical time on current programmable smart cards during the authentication of users. In this paper, we present a secure and efficient two-factor authentication protocol for fast access control systems and user-things identification schemes based on programmable smart cards. Our protocol is based on a zero-knowledge approach, and it is protected against common attacks. Further, we implement the proposed authentication protocol on current off-the-shelf programmable smart cards in order to demonstrate its efficiency and practicality. Finally, we compare our solution with related works and show the improvement of our solution in computation and communication perspectives. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

High-frequency electromagnetic fields in the 120 kHz band emitted from card readers for access control systems caused abnormally high doses on electronic pocket dosimeters (EPDs). All EPDs recovered their normal performance by resetting after the exposure ceased. The implementation of face recognition techniques in an embedded system is a very important aspect of various security applications, such as authorization identification in cash machines and door access for employee attendance. The purpose of this paper is to survey the existing hardware implementations of a face recognition system, particularly those who used for developing an embedded door access control system. This includes a brief discussion about face recognition algorithms and the hardware platforms outlining the importance of using a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) device, which can be used to design an embedded door access control system. It is found that the success of any door access control system depends on the type of face recognition algorithm in the feature extraction phase of the face recognition system and the selected hardware device. Based on a comparison between different feature extraction algorithms, the use of a hybrid feature extraction technique can improve the accuracy of face recognition system. An efficient door access control system can be obtained using a FPGA device, which is preferable because of its technical characteristics of parallelism, re-programmability and very high speed, in the implementation of a face recognition system.

access card authentication is critical and essential for many modern access control systems, which have been widely deployed in various government, commercial and residential environments. However, due to the static identification information exchange among the access cards and access control clients, it is very challenging to fight against access control system breaches due to reasons such as loss, stolen or unauthorized duplications of the access cards. Although advanced biometric authentication methods such as fingerprint and iris identification can further identify the user who is requesting authorization, they incur high system costs and access privileges can not be transferred among trusted users. In this work, we introduce a sensory-data-enhanced authentication for access control systems. By combining sensory-data obtained from onboard sensors on the access cards as well as the original encoded identification information, we are able to effectively tackle the problems such as access card loss and stolen. Our solution is backward-compatible with existing access control systems and significantly increases the key spaces for authentication. We theoretically demonstrate the potential key space increases with simple sensor data and empirically demonstrate simple rotations can increase key space by more than 30, 000 times with an authentication accuracy of 95%. We performed extensive simulations under various environment settings and implemented our design on WISP to experimentally verify the system performance.

In parking garages massive arrival of vehicles may cause delays at the entrance when the arrival rate is similar to (or greater than) the service rate. Furthermore, if the number of vehicles leaving the facility is less than the number of arrivals a long queue could be observed. Recent literature shows that real-time parking information management reduces the search time;however in parking garages these systems generate a particular side effect, which is beneficial and has not been studied before. We realized that when the facility is full drivers waiting in queue do not have to wait for other clients to exit;they can enter when any space detector changes its status from "occupied" to "free". This is not an information management strategy but a facility of the system that reduces wait time up to 24.7% and the number of vehicles in line by 21.0%. This also allows more clients to enter the facility -which is equivalent to increasing static capacity. These results were obtained from 1450 simulations carried out using field data, which represent approximately 2,867,375 drivers' choices in 16 scenarios, in typical operation days.

The paper describes the new model, which is a key element of the design and verification methodology for secure cyber-physical systems. The proposed model represents cyber-physical systems as a set of building blocks with properties and connections between them, while each building block is the projection of the integrated model. The models of attacker and attack actions are an external models that are connected with an integrated model: attack actions impact is modelled through changes in the properties of the system or its elements while the number of possible attack actions is reduced according to the attacker possibilities. The novelty of the proposed model lies in the strong focus on security and possibilities of direct (from the projections to the integrated model) and reverse (from the integrated model to the projections) transformations. Verification process is an integral part of the proposed solution. Verification provides the formal check of the system creation possibility in accordance with the requirements and limitations as well as that designed system is secured against an attacker of certain level of knowledge which is connected from certain access point and has certain amount of resources. During the experiments SPASS theorem prover, the Maude system and daTac were used. As an example of the proposed model application, firstly, an access control system was considered. This system contains Arduino microcontrollers, software agents, web-servers and different sensors. To provide an additional example an use case about mobile robot for perimeter monitoring was also presented. For the experiments, it was decided to use the LEGO 9797 Mindstorms NXT.

On the Linear IFMIF/EVEDA Prototype Accelerator (LIPAc), the validation up to 9 MeV deuteron beam with 125 mA continuous wave is planned in Rokkasho, Aomori, japan. Since the deuteron beam power exceeds 1 MW, safety issue related to gamma-ray and neutron production is critical. To establish the safety management indispensable to reduce radiation exposure for personnel and activation of accelerator equipment, Personnel Protection system (PPS) of LIPAc control system, which works together with Radiation Monitoring system and access control system, was developed for LIPAc. The management of access to the accelerator vault by PPS and the beam duty management of PPS are presented in details. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Managing XACML systems in distributed environments through Meta-Policies

Policy-based authorization systems have been largely deployed nowadays to control different privileges over a big amount of resources within a security domain. With policies it is possible to reach a fine-grained level of expressiveness to state proper responses of a system against multiple access control requests. In this context, XACML has achieved a big popularity between both industry and academy as a standard for the definition of access control policies, as well as an architecture for the evaluation of authorization requests and for the issuing of authorization decisions. However, the applicability of XACML is still not clear in collaborative and distributed environments composed of several security domains sharing the access control over some specific resources. Such a circumstance manifests when many security domains can simultaneously define the behavior that a resource will have upon received authorization requests, like for instance an organization with many subsidiaries, a company with a service virtualization business model, etc. In this paper we propose a solution to reach an effective distributed policy management considering that a number of policies in one domain may be confidential. To this end, the default XACML architecture has been redefined in order to use i) Master and Slave PAPs to communicate security domains, ii) Meta-Policies, to define privileges over access control policies (the policies become the managed resources) and iii) SAML extensions to protect the policy management messages which flow between security domains. The experiments and the defined scenarios in the paper prove the validity of the proposed solution. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Design of electroencephalogram authentication access control to smart car

In recent years, with the development of intelligent vehicles, the demand for security will be bigger and bigger. One of the most important solutions is the use of new biometric technology. At present, there are still some areas to be improved on biometric technology. For example, diseases will destroy some biological characteristics, some detection methods are too slow, many detection methods do not need living detection, and so on. Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a new biometric tool for living identification. In this Letter, a kind of identity authentication system based on the EEG signal is presented. The overall goal of this research is to design a new authentication method and develop the corresponding application. Therefore, the authors carried out a series of EEG experiments, and analysed and discussed the experimental results. Based on these results, they build and present an access control system based on the uniqueness of their EEG signals to be capable of authenticating access control to the car. The accuracy of the authentication system is >87.3%.

A new access control scheme for the growth of users and files in file protection systems is proposed. Our scheme associates each user with a user key and each file with a file key. For each key, there are some corresponding locks, that can be extracted from a nonsingular matrix. Through simple operations on keys and locks, privacy decisions of the protection system can easily be revealed. Furthermore, by employing our method, whenever a new user or file is joined, the corresponding key values and lock values will be determined immediately without changing any previously defined keys and locks.
