Visible light communication (VLC) exhibits rapid development tendency in recent years since it has many attractive features such as its low cost, electromagnetic interference-free and license-free spectrum. In this work, we consider the indoor VLC system with single mobile user. Due to mobility, the distance between the activated light-emitting diode (LED) and receive photodiode (PD) is varied. Under the assumption of random direction (RD) mobility model, we derive the probability density function (PDF) and the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of received electrical signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the mobile user. The adaptive spatial modulation (ASM) scheme with two adaptive mechanisms is developed where the modulation size can be dynamically changed based on the derived CDF and pre-specified switching threshold. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can balance the trade-off in terms of spectral efficiency and link robustness.

Analytic Form of Expression for a Capacity in an adaptive spatial modulation Systems

Estimation of channel capacity plays a crucial role in analyzing the performance of spatial modulation (SM) systems. So far, no analytic form of expression has been derived for SM systems with more than two transmit antennas. In this paper, the analytic form of expression is derived for computing the channel capacity using the Huffman mapping scheme for an adaptive SM system with four transmit antennas. Gauss hypergeometric function is exploited to derive the analytic form of expression for a 4 x 1 system. Analytical results show the validation of the derived expression.

Recently, the spatial modulation technique has been proposed for visible light communication (VLC). This paper investigates the average symbol error rate (SER) for the VLC using an adaptive spatial modulation (ASM). In the system, the analysis of the average SER is divided into two aspects: the error probability of the spatial domain and the error probability of the signal domain when the spatial domain is correctly estimated. Based on the two aspects, the theoretical expression of the average SER is derived. To further improve the performance of the system, an optimization problem is proposed to optimize the modulation orders on the LEDs. The ASM-based and the candidate-reduction-ASM-based optimization algorithms are proposed to solve the problem, respectively. Numerical results show that the derived theoretical values of the average SER are quite accurate to evaluate the system performance. Moreover, compared with the existing schemes, the proposed two algorithms are better choices for the VLC.

As a power-and bandwidth-efficient modulation scheme, the optical spatial modulation (SM) technique has recently drawn increased attention in the field of visible light communications (VLC). To guarantee the number of bits mapped by the transmitter's index at each timeslot is an integer, the number of transmitters (i.e., light-emitting diodes) in the SM-based VLC system is often set be a power of two. To break the limitation on the required number of transmitters and provide more design flexibility, this paper investigates the SM-based VLC with an arbitrary number of transmitters. Initially, a channel-adaptive bit mapping (CABM) scheme is proposed, which includes three steps: bit mapping in the space domain, bit mapping in the signal domain, and channel adaptive mapping. The proposed CABM scheme allows operation with an arbitrary number of transmitters, and is verified to be an efficient scheme through numerical results. Based on the CABM scheme, the information-theoretical aspects of the SM-based VLC are analyzed. The theoretical expression of the mutual information is first analyzed. However, it is very hard to evaluate system performance. To obtain more insights, a lower bound of the mutual information is derived, which is in closed form. Both theoretical analysis and numerical results show that the gap between the mutual information and its lower bound is small. Finally, to further improve the system performance, the precoding scheme is proposed for the SM-based VLC. Numerical results show that the system performance improves dramatically when using the proposed precoding scheme.

spatial modulation (SM) is a simple and spectral efficient modulation technique that has received much interest recently. In this paper, an adaptive SM (ASM) scheme is presented by combining adaptive modulation with conventional SM. The performance of ASM is analyzed in spatially correlated Rayleigh fading channels. In order to reduce the computational complexity of average bit error rate (BER), an approximate expression of error probability of the antenna index estimation, which contributes one of two components of the average BER, is derived by using the fitting method and matches well with simulation results in the SNR range of interest. With the above results, the closed-form spectrum efficiency (SE) and overall average BER are obtained, respectively. Besides, the optimized switching thresholds for maximizing SE under an average BER constraint are achieved by means of the Karush Kuhn Tucker conditions, and the resultant SE performance can be improved greatly when compared to the ASM system with fixed thresholds. Simulations indicate that the theoretical SE and BER are effective and agree well with the corresponding simulations. Moreover, the SE and BER performance of ASM under spatially correlated channel are poorer than those under spatially independent channel because of the influence of spatial correlation.

We have recently introduced adaptive spatial modulation (ASM) for multiple antenna systems, with the aim of improving the energy efficiency through spatial modulation (SM) and improving the average spectral efficiency (ASE) through adaptive modulation (AM). In this paper, we extend ASM to cognitive radio (CR) systems in an effort to improve the secondary system's performance in terms of energy efficiency and ASE. To this end, we propose two ASM schemes, one referred to as fixed power scheme (FPS) and the other as adaptive power scheme (APS). In both schemes, the secondary transmitter (ST) has limited knowledge of the channel state information (CSI) of the interference link. The difference between the two schemes, however, lies in the way the limited CSI is used to adapt the transmit power and/or modulation. As a benchmark, we also consider the scenario where the ST has perfect knowledge of the CSI of the interference link. For all cases, we analyze the performance in terms of ASE, average delay, and bit error rate (BER). We show that the proposed schemes offer tradeoffs in terms of the previously mentioned performance metrics, thus offering different options for applying ASM to CR systems. We also provide several simulation examples through which we corroborate the analytical results.

To simplify the calculation of average bit error rate (BER), a simple approximate expression of error probability of the antenna index estimation, which contributes one of two components of the average BER, is derived by using the fitting method, and may match the simulation well in the SNR range of interest. With the above results, the closed-form average spectrum efficiency (SE) and BER are obtained, respectively. Besides, the optimized switching thresholds for maximizing SE subject to an average BER constraint are also derived by means of the Karush Kuhn Tucker conditions, and the resultant SE performance can be improved greatly. Simulation results show that the derived average SE and BER are in agreement with the simulations. The presented ASM scheme with the optimized thresholds outperforms the existing scheme with fixed threshold, and has higher SE while maintaining the target BER.

Space-Time-Coded adaptive spatial modulation in Wireless MIMO Communication Systems

In this paper, we consider a wireless multi-antenna system using a promising technique, i.e., spatial modulation, and propose an adaptive spatial modulation (ASM) scheme embedded Alamouti space-time block coding (STBC). Instead of selecting one active antenna in each transmission in conventional ASM, we activate two antennas as one antenna group simultaneously to encode the information bits into Alamouti code blocks, each of which needs two channels used. Two detection schemes are presented in different channel conditions, i.e., the maximum likelihood (ML) detection and an adaptive modulation-order selection algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves the error performance and provides larger diversity gain compared to conventional spatial modulation and adaptive spatial modulation.

We have recently proposed adaptive spatial modulation (ASM) for multiple antenna systems with the aim of improving the energy efficiency through spatial modulation (SM) and improving the average spectral efficiency (ASE) through adaptive modulation. In this paper, we extend ASM to spectrum sharing systems in an effort to improve the secondary system's performance in terms of energy efficiency and ASE. Based on a limited feedback from the primary user (PU), the secondary transmitter (ST) uses power adaptation in order to maximize its ASE while respecting a peak interference constraint to the PU. When compared to the recently-proposed fixed power scheme (FPS), the adaptive power scheme (APS) proposed in this paper offers lower transmission delays, higher effective throughput, and comparable error performance. In this work, we analyze the performance of APS in terms of ASE, effective throughput, and average bit error rate (ABER). We also provide several simulations through which we corroborate these analytical results.

In this paper, we propose an instantaneous bit error rate (IBER) based adaptive spatial modulation (ASM) scheme for the M-ary phase shift keying (MPSK) constellation (ASM-MPSK). In the proposed ASM-MPSK system, the combination of MPSK modulation order and number of transmit antennas is chosen based on the one that yields the smallest IBER while keeping the average transmission bit rate (TBR) constant. Furthermore, a low complexity maximum likelihood (ML) detection scheme for MPSK SM is employed which significantly reduces the complexity of the proposed system compared with other adaptive modulation schemes that use the high complexity ML detector for detection. Additionally, in this paper, we also analyse the computational complexity for the proposed ASM-MPSK. The simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme provides a significant improvement in terms of the error performance compared to conventional MPSK SM systems under a particular TBR;for TBR = 5 bits/s/Hz, a performance gain of approximately 4 dB had been achieved at a BER of 1 x 10(-6).
